I suppose some of the people he killed had family that loved them too. They meant something to them too. He says if he could've gotten out of prison, which of course he wouldn't, didn't, but he would go somewhere with his family and no more killing, no slamming doors, a quiet place. Well, why didn't he get out when the getting was good? Not that I think he should have killed, but why didn't he go way before he got caught then?

the killing, in a way, justified his perception of himself been strong as he try to get away from his repressed and abused childhood experience. but as a matter of fact he's really not as "cold blooded" as he wanted himself to be. that's probably why he's regretted the life he'd chosen.
as a matter of fact, my guess is that he is not even as selfish as most people think he would be. well, fare enough, it generally takes a Ahole to survive in this world.

He is not looking for forgiveness from anyone other than his own family who just lost respect for him and nothing else. They had a nice comfortable life by not asking too much questions and probably intentionally closing their eyes. How can a wife not know with all those blood stains on his clothes and car?
If he is really able to feel for his family then how hard it is to feel about others? Why is this so difficult to extend these feelings to other families he deprived of their loved ones.

He was horrorbly abused and it's believed by some that there may have been sexual abuse, though he never did admit to it.

It never ceases to amaze me that someone can have such deep love for their own family but not care, in the slightest, about other people and their families. The only difference between someone you know and someone you don't is superficial and only in your mind.. because you know EVERYONE, you know your species and the human condition. So why is it easy for people to detach themselves entirely of individuals just because they don't go golfing with them? It is difficult to articulate this.
