What turned Reagan was the fact that he was a ratting bitch. When the FBI got a hold of him during the Red Scare of the 50's and threatened him with being blackballed he turned on his socialist and liberal friends. Thats why he became a conservative. He couldnt go back to the people he had betrayed. Reagan was practically a commie until that happened. He was one of the worst Presidents ths country ever had.

kmcarmo, in fairness to Reagan, he wasn't as bad as you say. He just isn't the Saint that Republicans want to make him out to be. It's an irony that Reagan is seen as a role model for Conservatives - much like Bush - spending ballooned astronomically under his watch.

That said, his political talent did not rest in domestic affairs, but internationally - he was the voice that we needed during that part of the Cold War.

He may not have defeated communism, but he eased the tensions of the time.

I agree with you, in that Reagan's optimistic outlook and his championing of American exceptionalism are what made him a good president.

However, I wouldn't say that pointing out his lapses in judgment as nitpicking. Iran-Contra, his failure to address the AIDs epidemic, his unwillingness to compromise on SDI which would have led to drastic arms reductions, all of this casts a pallor on his legacy.

Still, he wasn't the "worst" or the "best". I would have voted for him were I an adult then.
