I miss River. :( He was an amazing actor and although he died before I was born, I still feel like I knew him. :( RIP River Jude Phoenix , August 23rd, 1970- October 31st, 1993 <33333
I only saw him in Stand by me, but why was he so famous? Was it just his acting? I read in some quotes that he was anti-drugs, so obviously he was a phony. He probably ate beef all the time too but claimed to be this huge animal activist.
He did do drugs but was definitely not a meat eater. He was a vegan, an animal activist, and an environmentalist. He even purchased 800 acres on the border of Panama and Costa Rica to turn it into a permanent national park instead of someone buying that land and turning it into McDonald's.
Seriously, you guys are getting upset over a junkie dying. His choice There are other ways to deal with your awful life as a rich actor besides doing drugs.
Who here honestly knew this kid outside of his movie roles? You know, Mel Gibson was great in the Patriot, but he's a douche. Mike Vick is a great QB, but he tortured dogs. RP was great in SBM, but he was a drug addict.
He was stupid. That's why he died. Phil Hartman and James Dean are tragedies. RP is just dumb.
@encycl07pedia I have to agree I mean WTF was his problem? What did he have to complain about? He was one of the up and coming best actors around and would have been one of the great faces of Hollywood but then he goes and takes all those drugs...AT ONCE! He got himself killed and left his family behind.
@maxulic He could have asked for help or gone to his friends. there are better ways to deal with his problem. he could have just quite the business if it was bothering him that much and gone on to do something about all the things that were bothering him. If he really had to take drugs he didn't have to do them ALL AT ONCE. I understand that he did have problem but what he did wasn't fair to his friends or all the people that would have traded anything to be in his place.
@CrimesonWitcher Maybe growing up in a Cult, being a vagabond ur whole life was enuff 2 effect him so much. Bottoms was the Real Last Name of the "Phoenix Family" the changed it to lose the cult members and start a new life. Again he was thrown n2 being the Bread Winner at home. So sad, he was absolutely beautiful, inside & out! he was also, so very talented..there was just something about him, an ora he gave out, i was born a year after his death & it deeply saddens me, that he was before my time. The first time i came across river, was in stand by me, & he just stood out. I had too look him up, but unfortunately, he had bin dead for a number of years But for an actor too capture a young persons attention years after there death im sorry only a legend can pull that off
wow i wasnt alive when he died but my mom was and when she heard he died on the new she fainted she was like a huge fan she said she would mostly lusten to his music and talk about him all day she cried for like a month pretty sad
@princessfloribel ..Hey princessfloribel, I know excactly what your mom was feeling that day.I just turned 18 when River died,I was a HUGE fan..He was such an amazing beyond his years actor, loved him in stand by me (I was 10 when it came out) I thought then and until he died he was incredibly Hot,remembered when I was 12, his movie " A Night in the life of Jimmy Rearden".I Idolized him! He also was up for "Best Supporting Actor" for "Running on empty".The day he died,I cried and cried!
@summer3262 ..And then I asked my boyfriend (who I later would marry) to take me to a bar that was a hangout with friends at 11am, and I was not a big drinker..But I wanted a drink as I watched the coverage on T.V behind the bar for I was in utter shock....only 23...He would have been one of the GREATS! I'ts tragic....
He was excellent actor and a good, sensitive, modest and humble boy, he didn't want media attention and wasn't cocky and vain... he loved animals and had a hard life.
I wonder why his girlfriend didn't help him and call 911??? After he got out of bathroom he went to her and complain that he can't breed, then he passed out and she didn't do anything. Even after he asked her for help! She should seen for herself that he's not well and call an ambulance. They all just sit there and did nothing...
river was the best person that ever lived to quote gus van sant, he was a honest, remarkable person and one stupid mistake shouldn't define him, rip river i know you are looking down on us.
@darthspeaks yeah dude really talk about charlie sheen like that he isnt environmetally "aware" and probly doesnt give a crap about animals or anything. its kinda messed up to think of people like that though anyways
@darthspeaks you do realize that river was a teenager taking financial care of his entire family right? and that his family moved liked over 80 times and that he spent the first ten years of his life living incredibly poor and homeless in southern american countries like venezuela and mexico right?
@darthspeaks No. the lesson is that he wasn't some spoiled hollywood kid, but actually dealt with a shit load of things in his life. And for a lot of people drugs are a way to dull that pain. It doesn't mean he was a bad person. The fact that he cared so much about the poor and the environment show that he was actually a really good person. It's not his death that matters, but his life. Not saying Phoenix wouldn't have done great but just really hard to picture in hind sight now.Wow! Very intriguing thought to me at least.
@rollomf1 - River Phoenix was hired to play the character of Daniel, the journalist who Louis (Brad Pitt) tells his life story to. After River's death, Christian Slater stepped in fill the role and donated his $250,000 salary to two of River's favorite charities.

Would have been great to see him in it either way though.
@rikki444 I agree. I would've loved to see River as Lestat. Just imagine River as a vampire in Interview with the Vampire. If the studio agreed with Anne Rice about her choice of River as Lestat, then that's exactly what he could've gotten. :)
@rikki444 Uhm, No, her original choice for Lestat was a british actor named Jullian Sands. River Pheonix was to her random surprise, David Malloy-The interviewer in Interview With The Vampire.
@rollomf1 Anne Rice's first choice for the role of Lestat was Rutger Hauer, not River, and she was initially very opposed to the choice of Tom Cruise in the lead role (but warmed up to him after the film came out). Both Tom and River were too young in the author's mind. River was slated to play the role of the interviewer/journalist. Christian Slater was chosen as River's replacement.
@LadyKsvinesnivy You're wrong. Anne Rice only had an ebjection to Tom Cruise as Lestat and Antonio Banderas as Armand...but after seeing the film she praised their performances and was caught off guard with astonishment.
@rollomf1 They both would have been in the film either way. Anne Rice convinced the producers to give the David Malloy role (character and Interviewer) to River but he died a few weeks before filming. Tom cruise was to not be in the film at all because Anne believed he didn't have the potential to pull of Lestat and she wanted a british actor named Julian sands to portray her character. But after seeing the film she praised Toms performance.
@rollomf1 good point but the part he was going to have was christian slaters part, slater gave his payout from the film all to rivers family or a charity of their choice im not to sure but a nice touch
@megacoolhobokitty I know... i find that so respectable. like when Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell did when they took over heath ledgers part in the Imaginarium at Dr. Parnassus
boi dont ya wory imma get da bitch who had kill u an take u away frum ur promisin career cuz he was jealuz dat he was not as famus!! imma put muh cop uniform on dat me an kadeisha use in da bed an imma get muh glock an go fine john frusante! an i aint gunna kill him butta im fuck him up an make him turn hisself in so all ya fans an ya family can get sum justice! wakeen had went crazy like muh fran kimalee cuz of ur deaf an he will go back to normal once i take da bitch down!!

@maccermacnab You're not wrong about that weirdo sexykeishaxxx. I reckon she's one of the most truly fucked-up, illiterate people I've seen on YouTube.- or is it just a front? Either way, she's got serious problems.
It´s a shame what happened to him,i was like 5 years old when he died but i loved him in Stand By Me and Indiana Jones, such a shame at such a young age.
We both share the same name, that´s what happens when you have a Hippie mom :)
oh wow, he was supposed to be in interview with a vampire, how awesome would that have been, its always sad losing such great talent at such a young age
thats sad because we literally just now watched stand by me and my parents told me that he died of drug overdose but they said that he was found in a hotel dead O.o
@jackerooskie I know, I had no idea until i saw this too. Apparently Anne Rice wanted him to play Lestat, but it ended up that the producers wanted him to play Christian Slater's character. He would have been awesome as Lestat...
Instead of being assholes and talking about his drug problem, maybe we can talk about how talented he really was. I mean, it would be a little more respectful.
@spvegas He was also an activist, defending animal rights.Let us not forget that too.and yeah you have a point,he was both talanted and handsome. The fact that he took drugs gives people no right to judge him
hes kind of dumb but hes gunna be missed cool guy for sure... he did a line a high grade brown china Heroin and OD` immediatley ... tremmors and seizures stopped breathing and went blue
"Anne Rice had originally wanted River to play Lestat, but the producer wanted a more consistently bankable actor for the part so Tom Cruise was hired (against Rice's initial outrage). River remained with the picture and was to appear as the interviewer but the role was given to Christian Slater following Phoenix's death. The film was dedicated to River and Slater donated his salary from the film to Phoenix's favorite charities." ~ Wiki
i lived in l.a. at the time. they said River was 'speedballing', i guess that's when you shoot up heroin and cocaine. When he walked out of the Viper Room, he collapsed and went into convulsions. That's when Joaquin called 911 at the pay phone
actually Rice wanted him as Lestat ( T. Cruise ) but the director of the film choose Tom, Phoenix was so interested that he applied for the interviewer to be part of the movie. He was a great guy, but Tom really made an amazing Lestat
I dont understand why river would ever take drugs. he seamed like he was such a pure person who wouldnt do something like that. I wish we knew what really happened that night.
Such a tragic way to lose somebody :( I know this may seem inappropriate, but who else finds it a bit ironic that the news reader for the first clip's name is Tom Hanson, which is Johnny Depp's 21 Jump Street character's name, and Depp owned the Viper Room at the time? Strange.
I disliked because it makes me cry

rikki444 1 year ago 10
@rikki444 I agree. I would've loved to see River as Lestat. Just imagine River as a vampire in Interview with the Vampire. If the studio agreed with Anne Rice about her choice of River as Lestat, then that's exactly what he could've gotten. :)
MusicTributeVideo 1 year ago 10
@rikki444 Uhm, No, her original choice for Lestat was a british actor named Jullian Sands. River Pheonix was to her random surprise, David Malloy-The interviewer in Interview With The Vampire.
Dank951 1 year ago
@rikki444 Tom was the perfect Lestat though.

love how the reporter said cocaine overdose.... he speedballed cocaine and heroin... its kinda hard to Die from cocaine alone

@rollomf1 it was gonna be Christain Slater role
kenkross93 1 year ago
@rollomf1 Anne Rice's first choice for the role of Lestat was Rutger Hauer, not River, and she was initially very opposed to the choice of Tom Cruise in the lead role (but warmed up to him after the film came out). Both Tom and River were too young in the author's mind. River was slated to play the role of the interviewer/journalist. Christian Slater was chosen as River's replacement.
Tianguo2012 1 year ago
@rollomf1 He was to be Louis, not the interviewer. They wanted Christian Slater for the interviewer. Brad Pitt would have been out of the picture.
LadyKsvinesnivy 1 year ago
@LadyKsvinesnivy You're wrong. Anne Rice only had an ebjection to Tom Cruise as Lestat and Antonio Banderas as Armand...but after seeing the film she praised their performances and was caught off guard with astonishment.
Dank951 1 year ago
@rollomf1 They both would have been in the film either way. Anne Rice convinced the producers to give the David Malloy role (character and Interviewer) to River but he died a few weeks before filming. Tom cruise was to not be in the film at all because Anne believed he didn't have the potential to pull of Lestat and she wanted a british actor named Julian sands to portray her character. But after seeing the film she praised Toms performance.
Dank951 1 year ago
@rollomf1 River was going to play the interviewer. The role went to Christian Slater after his death.

Instead of being assholes and talking about his drug problem, maybe we can talk about how talented he really was. I mean, it would be a little more respectful.

Maybe if the video wasn't about him dying about his drug problem and it was about how "talented" he was, you would have a point, idiot.

Who took his place on Interview With the Vampire? Pitt or Cruise? Or was he supposed to play Slater's part?
cujossoul 2 years ago

That's when Joaquin called 911 at the pay phone

just to clarlify he didnt shoot the speedball he snorted it

Such a tragic way to lose somebody :( I know this may seem inappropriate, but who else finds it a bit ironic that the news reader for the first clip's name is Tom Hanson, which is Johnny Depp's 21 Jump Street character's name, and Depp owned the Viper Room at the time? Strange.
