In the 80's and start of the 90's (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994) I do remember sitcoms that had these themes - say no to drugs, "molestation", a character's death and around the mid to late 90's - "coming out of the closet" the way Ellen Degeners did on her show for instance. Her show was cancelled as a result because weirdly enough in the "liberal 90's" they did not accept a lesbian themed show on basic TV. In the 2000's, it went to cable - like in the L Word
