Why don't they get a whole apartment? Why just one room? It is a nice concept but why do they have share a kitchen or bathroom? What if they have a family?
But what if I want to rent the cheap guest worker place being a Canadian IT worker because I don't like paying unnecessary rent? I want to just bank my $40,000 after tax income.
I know. I agree with both you comments. I'm looking at this video like "what the f*ck?!" It's like a nice-nasty way of putting a band-aid over the fact that people are being exploited.
Cohabitation is when people live together in an emotionally- and/or physically-intimate relationship.
Direct discrimination occurs when a person is treated less favourably than another. However, in reality discrimination often takes more subtle forms. Thats why indirect discrimination is also covered.
A light and air well? That would suck. If I was stuck working my ass off doing hard labor while people around me drove exotic cars I would freak out. Hide lower class in the city for a symbiotic relationship, nice way to talk about people.
In its first run, I thought this video was downright insulting. But hearing it the second time, I find that there are practical considerations, with emphasis on the design's strategic elements (e.g. like being closer to work thus reducing long commutes and traffic, etc). It however can do without the patronizing tone of the script.
And I don't think this is about Dubai or even a reflection of Dubai.
Envy Envy!. It's discusting you think treating the poor like some kind of slave robot is evyable you are a discrace. All people are equal. I cannot wait for the day when money has no value, then you will see the real rich people on this planet??? Your a discrace.
Hmm, this project won't work because the elite won't be able to pick and choose low income prostitutes if they can't see them. Maybe a display case should be added.
this whole idea is disgusting... hiding the working class on the insides of buildings to keep them invisible. And this video gives no sense that there could possibly be anything wrong with this idea. "integrated but separated" sounds a lot like separate but equal and we all know how well that worked out.
wow i could not believe what i was hearing! i hate this mentality that the rich are so much better than the poor so lets put the poor in the middle of a building and design the circulation so that they never see eachother... what the heck, we need more unity.
"invisible omnipresence" - is that the solution to the "embarrassment" and unpleasant aesthetics of a large workforce of indentured slaves who have no rights and are paid less than $1 per hour to build the luxury apartments? or maybe they're the lucky ones who are paid TWICE that amount ($2 per hour) , to "service" the wealthy and tourists?
workers should not be a silent, invisible presence. they should be participants in the culture and the life of the place they built.
The problem are not the workers but the stupid mentality or the new rich...ooooh, they are ugly and poor, and they smell because they work...is really sad. Fucking pay them more and stop stupid projects like this
some of the rich people have this stupid mentality but no they souldnt stop these projects bcoz if they do then those workers will not find a job and they will do of hunger.
I get a very uneasy feeling when I think of Dubai. I wonder whats "really" going on. During a time of war and low fuel supplies shouldn't things everywhere be slowing down. Or maybe this whole fuel and war thing is to keep us distracted while some sort of new world order is being constructed right before our very eyes. People from all around the world are turning their backs on thier own countries and making Dubai the best place. What will happen to other economies?
i dont think there is a conspriscy or any thing here and if there is one i dont think they will choose dubai to be the place. it is just that UAE is having an economic bump now they want utilize it by constucting the country to benefit them in the future and people from all around the world go to dubai for trading and to do bussiness.
Although they may be separated in the building, by living inside the city, the low income workers are actually given a chance to interact with the rest of the population after they finish their work. Also, by avoiding long commute time (in which the don't get paid) they have more free time, which can be used for leisure.
There is no dignity in sitting in a hot bus for hours after work.
KDG proposes to give dignity to the workers by allowing them to live in the city.
The "terrible feeling that crept upon me" as I stated below, is not easy to explain in hard terms. It lies in the TONE at which KDG (whatever KDG may be, as yoda9999 rightfully brought up) speaks about "they" and "them". As if "them" are not part of us. As if "them" is a problem that we got stuck with beyond our own fault. Them look... ...Awkward! <-- That tone. That lack of equality, that expression of superiority. Is something that is generally not appreciated in western Europe.
a terrible feeling crept upon me as I watched this video. I would rather sit in dignity in a boiling hot bus and commute from far every day than be humiliated in this toilet roll.
From the videos, I can see that Kartun Development Group is not a real corporation, but probably a project by architecture students at SCI-Arc.
The slick visuals and cold synthesized narration was designed for effect. No real customer or public facing presentation would use words like "awkward", "integrated separation" or "invisible alliance".
However bizarre and insensitive, it is a very impressive proposal by a fictional company.
This is not just sad, it is sick. This rediculous monologe makes me feel physically ill. Oh how clever of KDG to realize what a problem these exploiters-of-the-human-race will have when they want not only more than anyone's fair share of luxury, but also to have it without even having to SEE the other humans, who make that life possible. It's ALMOST humorous to hear this condecending woman speak about saving the poor workers from the humiliating pity of the rich. sick.
If you listen to the voiceover closely, you'll realize that we are not forcing anyone to live in them. If the renters make more money they are free to move elsewhere. Low income housings are common around the world, and most are poorly constructed and pushed to the edge of the city. KDG's proposal actually improves on the low income housing situations common in other cities.
it's sad to see that honest, good working people that shaped the development of Dubai is living inside an enclosed tube as if they're insects or termites. this is my opinion, this proposal answered the need, but without much heart in it.
So where else would the low income workers go as Dubai's city limits continues to grow taking over the current camp areas? So in a way some are forced to live in the hiding tubes.
The plan is great, but its a way of hiding problems in my point of view.
Agreed they are not homeless and we are not targeting construction workers, but 3 year visiting workers. Following the real estate and rent values as determined by free market, they cannot afford to live in the city. So yes, they are hidden, but that's a means to an end. Furthermore, they won't be forced to live in these towers or be forced to stay in and hide.
whuts wrong with ppl that make less then u? these people are not bums or homeless there hard working construction workers not crack addicts this whole video is showing how to hide hard working ppl from richer ppl they serve
Why don't they get a whole apartment? Why just one room? It is a nice concept but why do they have share a kitchen or bathroom? What if they have a family?

UAE;
-be careful, sheik Issa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan might torture you. (google him)
-also, remember dubai was built on exploitive slavery
-only 12% is rich, the majority are in poverty in a class-based society
-local women are invisible behind ninja-suit burkas
-media censorship/ restrictions are over-the-top
-child-trafficking for jockey use is common
-job discrimintation based on ethnicity such as ''arabs only'' is normally written on newspapers.

I find it horrendous they have to produce a video to justify segregation while "protecting" the sense of aesthetics for the rich that go there.

Personally I think some people from the West like to try to poke holes in Dubai out of envy, I would classify this video in that context.
