  • Your cups are beautiful Tammy. Great job! Thanks for sharing the opening of the kiln after glazing.. I was so excited with you! I need to get some dipping glazes myself.

  • The website I posted on your FB page which has the tips, well someone posted a tip which says you can put children's playground sand on the shelves and it will protect your kiln shelves from the glaze if it leaks. I haven't tried it yet to be able to tell you it works.

  • I was wondering if kiln wash makes it so you don't have to put wax on the bottom of your wares so that the glaze doesn't make it stick to the shelf, or if you still have to wax the bottom. Do you wax the bottoms of your cups? In the future it may help even if you forget the kiln wash (which, I feel stupid because, I don't know what it is!!)

  • @mga2890 Kiln wash is what you apply to your shelving to protect them in case glaze "flows" and sticks to the shelf. I didn't have any on the shelves the 1st glaze run, had some major drips and needed to have hubby grind the glaze off...ruined the shelves slightly. Waxing the bottoms stops the flow of glaze from making it to the shelf and also repels the glaze from landing in this area when glazing. You can also "dry foot" which is just wiping off glaze from the bottoms :)

  • Slowly catching up with your vids! PC troubles... Potter's Choice "Blue Rutile" needs a couple of coats. It works best for me when I dip it over "Agate" = a matt light seafoam. Love the Celadon, Temuko, Blk&Wht. I don't use kiln wash because I find it flakes over time and gets onto my pots! So, I chizel the shelf now and then. Cone 6 SLOW is the way to go with cone 6 stoneware and cone 6 glazes! I hold for 30 min. to be certain the entire kiln reaches temp. Regards, Janice

  • @janicethepotter So glad you're back, pc challenges are not fun!!! Hold time: I was worried about the hold time ruining the glazes because I'm not really sure what it does to the glaze (probably should figure it out..lol). Thanks for the tip on the Blue Rutile, it looked so thick after I dunked it I thought it was enough, I'll definitely double dip next time! Have you had a chance to glaze your project pieces yet? Make sure you post a video clip...can't wait to see them!!!

  • This reminds me.. I must kiln wash before my next glaze firing. Some very cool results! I love the one you took in the house with you :)

  • @DirtKickerStudio Thanks :) I'm sitting here drinking out my "lime green dream" right now! There's nothing like drinking out of a handmade cup...nothing. As I was glazing the Mint Irish Cream cup I realized how comfortable it was to hold. I really wouldn't have thought it with the unusually round handle, but it was definitely a nice fit.

Next time, I'm slathering my shelves as if to avoid a bad sunburn...those babies will be solid kiln wash!

  • I just love kiln openings! Thanks for sharing the excitement. I love the shino and white, I will have to try that. Nice color combos on the others as well. Good work, despite the kiln wash fiasco! Guess that's the true meaning of "live and learn!"

  • @djostraat Yes, live and learn...the only way to truly understand a lesson learned ;) Thanks, that shino glaze has really been a lot of fun to work with..you really never know what you're gonna get and there's really no way to predict it. A random happenstance, lol! Please share your glazing results...would so love to see!!!

  • Oh no! The bottoms stuck =[

But they still turned out great!

Celedon is georgoes! But I like green so my opinion is a bit bias ^.^

I also like your black and white cups.

    Bravo tammy! =]

Hey, I posted a video of me throwing a flower pot that I recorded today!

If you have time, hop on over to my channel and check it out =D

Im a bit nervous because of the camera so I made lots of mistakes, but it turned out pretty good for my first video.

Anyways, Goodluck with your next firing!

    Catch ya later.

  • @SavannahsCeramics Thanks Savannah! Your video was great...I was so thinking you are so smooth when you throw, a natural :)

  • Love your shino & white. What's the brand name of your shino, please??

Wonder if that rutile (say roo-TEEL) needed more stirring??? Rutile is used to make lots of different colors, from yellow on up.... kind of tricky maybe?? Also, it might need an uneven coat in order for the colors to show -- black where thin, blue where thick, etc. (I have some like that, easy to be disappointed!!)

  • @ThatLynnGirl Thanks Lynn! The glaze is Amaco's Potter's Choice- Shino (PC50). It's a fun glaze for me because it was the 1st one I felt I couldn't mess up on...it was suppose to look that way! I agree with you on the rutile...I may not have dipped it properly, I did use the paint mixer to blend. My other thought was a slow fire, the last time I fired it I used a medium speed with no hold. Not sure which one it is...do you think I can re-fire it somehow?
