Also. Several pre-colombian native tribes or groups lived in the island prior to the arrival of Columbus. Most signifincantly, Tainos, Siboneyes and Guanatabeyes. These groups are thought to have arrive in Cuba from South America hoping from the lesser antilles to Cuba.

Sorry to disappoint Changoyomi....but the term Guajiro(a) originated during the Spanish-American war, when US soldiers called cuban rebels--fighting the Spanish Army (also known as mambises), war heroes. In spanish, it sounds as guajiros. The term is genuinly Cuban.

In Puerto Rico, for example it isnt used. Instead, people from the countryside are called jibaros.

It is also used in reference to some peculiarly rustic solution or idea like how americans call something crappy "ghetto". The story goes that the term was born after Cuba's war for independence (The Spanish American War) where the USA fought alongside with the Cubans against Spain, and cuban fighters, most country men, were called by Americans war-heroes (gua-jiros).
