It's really not the age you start at. It's what's in your soul. I started playing at 9, gave it up at 21, and started again 2 years ago at 48. What matters is if you are passionate about playing. Some people have a natural gift to reach greatness, others don't. I don't but that does not stop me from enjoying playing for hours on end. Don't let anything stand in your way and maybe someday you will be one of the lucky ones to reach greatness. Love the video.
same here, sucks when you want to achieve a career in music but you take up an instrument at 16 years old. I practice like for hours everyday but its hard to make up 6 years of skill and self taught stuff (most drummers i know started at 10)
The peak of demotivation, totally. I mean, i'm 16 and trying to learn and master the percussion, and a 9 yr old kid plays better than me, than that sucks. But I see that ur kid has a great future ahead of him, cause with that kind of skill I believe he really may become the next Neil Peart.
This kid is THE SHIT! He is really good...NEXT NEIL PEART... i guarantee...by the way i HATE electric kits because if yoou hit it on the sides it dosent effect the souunds... but whatever... keep up the good work you are amazing
I've been playing drums for over 20 years now, and have to say your son has a tremendous gift. It looks like (through the drums) he is playing open-handed on the i-hat--and that's awesome because it allows free and natural motion around the drums. Congrats on getting him started with good technique and solid tempo.
for the record, she wasnt comparing this kid to neil peart, but just saying he is developing similar style.
So crazy clown, when you say this kid CAN'T be the next neil peart, and that he's not as goos as him, ,remember this kid is NINE and neil peart has been paying since he was twelve and hes now 56. so a nine year old who has barley has months of lessons will for sure not be as good as neil peart now, but without a doubt become just as good or better if he wants to.keep it up!! your great :]
Awsome!!!! That kids got lots of talent!!!!(probably beter than i will ever be!!!)but still he cant be the next neil peart sorry....=( but he is still really good just not as good....sorry if i sound like a jerk but he actually sounds just a bit like neil peart not alot and he is amasing not a canadian leader....but he is still pretty cool!!!!!!!!!
He has a "real" drum set. He actually has both acoustic and digital. The digital kit in the video was what was provided by the school. A good drummer can play on garbage cans if he has to.
@clbgeballe good drummers dont need a double pedal to be good. 90% of drummers will show off with double pedals to create the illusion they are talented. some things can be cool on double pedal, but good chops with a single kick beats fast double bass any day of the week..
VERY NICE! My son is only 2 but plan to get him into the drumming too....watch some buddy rich & start him on working more of the one-hand drum roll!!! He'll be a star for sure! START THEM EARLY!!!!!
YES! and Buddy rich is just the best all around...PERIOD...Joey from Slipknot is good with his feet, but can't match the stick handling/control of Buddy rich...maybe Neal Pearl comes close!
This kid is freaking awesome. We have like the same mode of playing. I made up a beat that kinda goes like that. Keep practicing kid your gonna be awesome.
Aah, so refreshing to know that honest to god GOOD parenting is not dead! Embrace that ability, no matter how loud it gets! And really, not even a year playing? Hard to believe but awesome if it's true. One last thing though - get the kid on REAL drums asap! The sooner he gets the feel of real skins and metal the better he'll be in the long run. Good on you guys...
Thanks for the nice comment 2thinkslow. He started in August 2007 and this was shot at his recital in December of the same year. BTW he does play a real set (Gretsch), this was the set they had at the recital. I will soon update with a new video of him playing an entire solo based on triplets. Does some wicked fills a la Dave Weckl, Gene Kruppa and finishing with some very fast bass drums (single foot) a la Lars Ulrich.
omg!! that was awesome! i think he should try to play Wont Get Fooled Again.. by the who.. i can play that on the drums.. and it is soo fun! i think he should try it!
Great Time and Great rhythm! Clean fills! Lessons and teachings account for quite a bit, but sometimes you can't just teach talent. This kid is off to an awesome start to possibly an great career in drumming if he wants it.
Hey, kudos to the kid. He must have a great teacher and just absolutely love what he's doing with a real passion to be that good at 9. He's sure better than I was at that age (partially because I only played piano at 9 lol).
there can be another neil peart. theres quite a few drummers who could give him a run for his money. but using the same techniques as him would take a lifetime. im self taught too, am lefty but sometimes beat the hihat with my right hand. and yes i switch my drums around so hi hat is on the right. i only take private lessons for marimba, rudiments, right handed trapset and to control my volume because im a power drummer. but enough about me, this guys got it going for him in the future, man!
omg is this in cambridge because then the drum teacher before this kids i was one of his students if you ever see him (his names vic)and mention one of his students lefty he should remember
That kid is crazy good for his age. I really hope he keeps with it, who knows how good he could be with more experience.

WOW, that rocks, i'm 14, ive been playing 3 years, I have a sweet drumset with no lessons under my belt and hes as good as I was last year, and I was 13. That just goes to show that just because you are young doesn't mean you suck at someting.
hes got some skills! if he keeps it up hell be really good. Ive benn pklayin for about 5 years now and hes playin better than i did after my firt year thats for sure
