The Grateful Dead heals me, makes me feel whole, lets me accept things I cannot change, and at the core is Jerry Garcia I must say. I've noticed his solo work really does much of the same things. I've seen Furthur, and it was a good show, but didn't have the magic that the Grateful Dead had. The Grateful Dead gives me such hope. Shine on!
This gig was my intro to the Dead. I was travelling through North America and a friend of mine from Toronto convinced me to cross the border to come and see this "Hippy" band id never heard of. They were pretty much unknown here in Australia. It was a day that opened my eyes and changed my life. Was the only time i ever saw them and felt the vibe that they radiated. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing back some amazing memories. Blessed be....
This was my first show ever. Sat behind the stage about 20 feet from Mickey and Bill. AWESOME. Saw about 65 shows total. Miss it. I did catch the first three Further shows @ Boston Orpheum in March this year and have to say it was almost like back in the day....

Arrested at Niagra Falls for trespassing with some other Deadheads the day after the show- had just eaten two hits of LSD to enjoy the Falls. Bailed out by other heads. Never went home, did the tour instead with my new friends. Thanks for posting the Vid.
This brought me to tears… the changes that a couple of decades can bring to a life. Unquestionably, a time that captures an awesome Americana experience. Today I am with the youth that I was in Buffalo at Ft. Bragg returning from war, separated from family and without the freedom that is so evident in this awesome video. Ruta930. Thank you for an unimaginable flashback. God willing the future will provide our youth what too many have taken for granted.
@fatdaddyhandy Yo, man, thank YOU for not only serving our country in the ways that you have, but for coming back and remembering the love. We make it real in everything we do, brother.
Yes, they were big bulky cameras back in those days...and we probably would have footage from alot more shows if the cameras were easier to manage.
My boys are now 24 and 25 yrs old and grew up with the Dead as a huge part of their lives...I wouldn't call them deadheads, like we were, but the dead are still a part of who they are today.
Did the kids in the video grow up to be dead fans? I'd guess by their approx. age and this vid being in 1989 that they're 30-32 today? Just curious.I had a chance to see the Dead in Birmingham, Alabama when I was 13 and for some reason, did not, or was not able to go. Jerry died a few months later. I'm very happy to say that I'm a huge Dead fan now and the music rocks my soul! Thanks for posting these great videos. And carrying around what had to be an enormous camcorder at the time!
My childhood friend Christopher Waite was at this show.... He was killed in a car accident a few hours later.... RIP Chris... At least he had the chance to see one of the worlds greatest bands before he passed....
Omg thank you! I've been looking for pics or video from the July 4, 1989 Buffalo NY show for a LONG TIME!!! It was my first real taste of freedom. I was 18.
This was one of my last with all the boys that I made in a long run of shows during and after college and before real job; family etc...God do I miss the atmosphere, energy, and fun....nothing like it!
Hey...Great film! Do you happen to have any film of a (show) in Cleveland OH..that was SNOWED OUT???? Yeah..they didnt even open the parking lot for that show, and all of us ended up in a Holiday Inn lobby, hallways..wherever we could "land"! They were closing the highways too, so many of us were stuck in a snow storm in a 3 hotel town! Good Times!
@kelschatz Yeah...I got a camera to make some home movies with my boys when they were little...most shows I didn't bring the camera - back then they were big and clunky. Didn't happen to make that snowed out show in Ohio...sounds like you had some fun though!! :)
@kelschatz I slept in my car in that parking lot... there was a local band, Oroberos, playing in the hotel lobby that was pretty good. I was disapointed about the cancellation but made the best of it and drank some cocktails in the bar and danced for hours (the band played some decent Dead covers, woot!)
Oh...I so want somebody to catch a shot of themselves and say..."hey...that's me!"...in one of these home movies. I have alot more footage of this one but YouTube has a 10 min time limit. I should post another...
whew.....now I got it...my mind has cleared????......I was thinking of 86'.....it was on July 4th as well...footage of the parking lot just started firin off the synapses....I definitely missed the 89' show...oh so many fine, fine memories...thanks...:) :) :)
ok...I knew it was Rich Stadium but a different year. I remember that I was so psyched to see that show but I read afterward that Dylan said Tom Petty/Heartbreakers was the best band he ever played with and I was pissed that he didn't say the Dead was the best band he ever played with!! ;)
i believe i was there...was this the year that petty an the hearbrkrs and dylan were billed also....one day the dead opened...then petty..an then bob....was sweltering hot for the dead but things cooled off quite a bit by dylan? so many fine memories....just cant seem to keep the dates straight....hmmmm...as i recall during the deads second set....we all called in a little rain cloud to cool things off....could just have been the paper in my hed tho.....do i got it right????
I know the show you are talking about...but this one (I believe) was opened by 10,000 Maniacs and then it was the Dead. 10,000 Maniacs had these big puppet things and they seemed overwhelmed by the whole scene. Was the Dylan/Dead show Rich Stadium but another year??...My memory isn't always so hot anymore ;)
I'm so grateful for those good times while we had them... :) this was one of my favorite shows but I have so many funny stories/memories of Philadelphia, Louisville, Hamilton Ontario, Augusta, Portland.... and on and on...
My 1st show was at Rich Stadium in 1992.

Holy crap!- is this version of The Music Never Stopped from this show? This is one of the best MNS I've ever heard - Jerry's guitar is on fire.
Also I love how so many people took their little kids to Dead shows back in the day. Wish my parents had been that cool
