what a beautiful engine. I remember chasing that thing all the time in the 80s with my dad. Too bad they can't afford to run the excursions anymore. My son would love it. Thanks for the video.

My favorite norfolk and western steam engines are the 4-8-0's. Such as strasburg's 475, #433, 1118, 265, those kinds. But this one's still good. Very fast.
Ah yes, the Norfolk & Western J 611 steam engine. My favorite. Totally the type of engine that I'd love to drive if I were an engineer. I have an HO model of that engine. Along with several passenger cars. I used to put it around our Xmas tree every year.
I'M WITH YOU "2do". THE 611 WOULD BRING A HECK OF LOT MORE REVENUE TO THE AREA WITH EXCURSIONS AND FESTIVALS THAN THAT UGLY OUT OF PLACE ART MUSEUM WILL EVER BRING!!!!WHICH BY THE WAY- WHO OK'D THAT MESS OF A BUILDING IN OUR HISTORIC MKT AREA????
We have the 611 sitting here in Va. Our city is too corrupt to put money in to the Transportation Museum of Va. They will put 3 million to a art museum but it TS for the T M of Va. Look at all the money they waisted on their studies on what to do with Victory Stadium just to get their way and tear it down. They could have give that money to T M of Va.
NS had a new owner which is why he cancelled the steam program, but now the new guy in charge of NS is a steam fan, so funs to restore both 1218 and 611 are in store....theyre both kept in good condition to start
Both engines are in the Virginia Museum of Transportation at Roanoke. The 611 was still in fine running condition when steam excursions ended, but the 1218 was in pieces, and just put back together for display, so Im sure it would need some work to run. Id love to see them on the tracks again.
It really doesn't take that many tools in your shop to restore a steam locomotive. For specialty work, like wheelsets and part fabrication, the NS could ship the work to other train museums which need the money. The glory of steam locomotive design is the relative simplicity of all of the parts. Steam engines could, in theory, run much longer than diesel locomotives, in the long scheme of things.
Well, 1361 is a special case. The crown sheet of the firebox, after years of use, has become too thin to comply with FRA regulations, and it will have to be rebuilt. This along with a variety of other issues (funding, location, workers, steam knowhow)will only make the restoration process more difficult.
I don't know how close you've been following it but they recently moved it to Altoona and the Railroader's Memorial Museum recently got a new CEO and they plan on pushing forward with the restoration. So there may be hope.
they retired the 611 and the 1218 because they were lawsuits waiting to happen. the 611's pilot truck derailed on an employee run and injured a few. the 1218 is always slamin into cars because NS employees don't think about the boiler overhang. yes, NS is pretty stubborn, but they have their reasons.
Ok you come from canada single handly and see how much resistance you get from these fans. beside bigger steam engines are much better than model steam engines.

Excellent videos. I think technically the train was northbound as the NS mainline through Culpeper is considered N-S rather than E-W.

what do you mean by, "slamin into cars"?
Rail cars? Or faggoty automobilists who cant bother to stop at the level crossing.
DarkTower97 3 years ago 2
hahaha, good point=D. but no, slamed into some empty hoppers on a siding with a curved switch so the boiler swung out and hit em.
hondacb650c 3 years ago
Well if NS wasn't smart enough to expect boiler overhang, then they shouldn't have even ran the 1218!

They should never have decommissioned this locomotive. I wish someone would bring it out of mothballs and run it again.

Yahno, looking at it closer, that might actually be Elk Run Road in Catlett. (Based on the siding and buildings in the background.) My wrongocity.
