Ok, I played Battletech back in the day. ALL the Mechs from the original Battletech game were Macross/Robotech rip offs.
The mech in dispute is the Warhammer which was taken directly from the Excalibre model. Hell the cardboard cutouts for all the ripped off mechs in the original boardgame still had the Robotech logos painted on them.

What is funny is when I was younger I kind of liked Robotech but I was a huge fan of Mechwarrior. Who knew that a few years later the companies who helped producing these two series would battle it out in court. I really wanted a new MechWarrior game.

@Knightshield Yep. Harmony Gold took Smith & Tinker to court, and the judge told them that S&T is willing to pay royalties to HG for the likeness of the Warhammer, as well as many other 'Mechs. In a nutshell, he told HG to shut the hell up, and gave a court order to HG forcing them to release the license to S&T. That's what I know, so Mechwarrior is back in the running, and under development.

First off, Battletech and Mechwarrior are from the same universe. Please at least know something about something you enjoy. If you like Mechwarrior, then I would highly suggest checking out Battletech, because it has a lot of the back story that you are missing in the games.
In all honesty, I don't think that a company in Japan has the right to mess with a long standing American company. Mechwarrior is its own universe.
Mechwarrior is realistic mechs with feasible actuators and mechanism whereas Robotechs are just imaginative for children. I don't find much similarity in the 2 other than having guns on chest and large cannons on both arms. FASA should counter-sue Robotech or attack them with mechs. I would like to see those plastic robotech Valkyrie being shot down by Madcat and Summoners.

The madcat wont be in this game because its a clan mech and the clanners dont come till way after 3015 when the reboot takes place, third succesion war i think. But the warhammer wasnt the best choice. Although harmony gold does have rights. They only have partial rights to the desighn sold to both harmony gold and catalyst ( not sure if thats the name of the battle tech owners but i think im close) imho this all just goes down as a bad buisness discision from way back
Harmony Gold actually has no legal claim. They haven't in 20 years, they just want people to believe it. Harmony Gold had rights to publish the Robotech cartoons and manufacture toys in the united states, they do not own videogame rights nor do they haveexclusive production rights of said products in anywhere else in the world. Plus, they do not own the publishing rights to Macross, only the Macross stuff published as Robotech. Subtle difference, but a significant one anyway.

mechwarrior is battletech. Battle tech came first and the mechwarrior came after but mechwarrior is by in some parts not apart of the Canonical battle tech series.

Harmony Gold did create a lot of mech designs that FASA just ripped off. How would you feel if you took the time drawing and designing those specs only to have someone steal them from you? I'd guess you'd feel like crap. I love Battletech, and I love MechWarrior, but to dis Harmony Gold because its protecting its property is downright idiotic.
As far as this lawsuit goes, Harmony Gold didn't create anything, design-wise. HG did license the rights to three different anime shows from Tatsunoko & rewrote them into Robotech.
I thought that FASA had supposedly licensed the designs as well, but didn't have nearly the amount of money to fight the legal battle that Harmony Gold did, so FASA settled out of court and agreed to not use the designs anymore.
If FASA didn't acquire the rights, why hasn't Tatsunoko/Studio Nue sued them themselves?

@evaunit143 the question i have is why the fuck did they even want to copy someone elses mech to use as the star of their trailer? there are plenty of other mechs out there that are unique. Although this issue rings a bell, that mech looks similar to the Hellbringer and I think I read somewhere that the hellbringer in the battletech tabletop game caused a similar stir as it looked similar to the robotech mech.

I agree, the Mad Cat would have been better than the Warhammer, but I also would have prefered to see the Uziel, It's ,my favourite 'mech and I'm yet to see one in a trailer of any kind. I also had never heard of Robotech before Battletech. I think Robotech is asian, which may be why we hear little about it. Whatever the case, I don't see how poor 'mech choice in the trailer should prevent the game being made.

If you check FASA's Battetech box, the table game, there are several mechs directly taken from Robotech but the fact is that are only mechs from Macross Saga (I.E. Tatsunoko production). The Marauder, Stinger, Wasp, Warhammer, Archer, Rifleman and Locust (I don't remember if also the Battlemaster was in that anime). So what the hell wants Harmony Gold? I know... it's the second word in her name...

Its tragic that one artist ripped off another, OR that two guys came up with the same idea, but it happens. Robotech can be a dead franchising, but Macross (from where the robotech "franchising" was... lets say... Has been made) still aliave and strong. The last chapter of the franchising is Macroos Frontier. Type it in You Tube and take a Look.
Note: Robotech is a milk shake of Animes; in's an original series. They mixed a lot of Japanese series and make a diferent (and strange) Anime.

This is actually an old issue. HG had sued the people that did the earlier mechwarrior games for this very mech. The lawsuit went like this. HG had claims to the destroid and mechwarrior had claims to the neurohelmet. I'm actually suprised they put the Rifleman IIC into the gameplay trailer...

Quite alright friend, and as for an explination to where those mechs are...they weren't invented yet! Mech 5 takes place 3035, that's before the clans invade, so no Timberwolf, no Marauder, no Loki, the list goes on. If it's clan, it won't be in the game
The marauder is a century old is mech, as i remember right is is the very first avianoid battlemech design ever mass-produced. invented in somewhat 2500. so this mech IS available in 3015! get the facts straigt! also, the JagerMech is not a Rifleman in every aspect. It was invented to serve as the successor of the rifleman, which was storyline-wise a very poor mech design in terms of heat efficciency and survivability.
Mechwarrior is not actually older than Robotech, well rather Macross. SDF Macross came out in '82, Robotech in '85, first BatTech books in '84. The designs for some of the mechs in question were not around prior to '85 and definitely not in '82.
mechwarrior has always had trouble with copyrights on mechs. however the dev/s and publishers are still going to publish the game, just missing some of the core mechs that most of us gamers are used to.
Historically pornography is a first adopter of new technology with enourmous success, but oddly the industry has never been able to establish itself within the interactive game industry...
i guess there is no harm in trying as it one of the last frontiers for pornography to integrate itself into, but i doubt it'll ever really catch on...

I have a feeling that this lawsuit was a moneygrab on the part of Harmony Gold. This game was probably on track for a Q4 release to take advantage of Christmas.

Harmony Gold did create a lot of mech designs that FASA just ripped off. How would you feel if you took the time drawing and designing those specs only to have someone steal them from you? I'd guess you'd feel like crap. I love Battletech, and I love MechWarrior, but to dis Harmony Gold because its protecting its property is downright idiotic.

As far as this lawsuit goes, Harmony Gold didn't create anything, design-wise. HG did license the rights to three different anime shows from Tatsunoko & rewrote them into Robotech.
I thought that FASA had supposedly licensed the designs as well, but didn't have nearly the amount of money to fight the legal battle that Harmony Gold did, so FASA settled out of court and agreed to not use the designs anymore.
If FASA didn't acquire the rights, why hasn't Tatsunoko/Studio Nue sued them themselves?

@evaunit143 the question i have is why the fuck did they even want to copy someone elses mech to use as the star of their trailer? there are plenty of other mechs out there that are unique. Although this issue rings a bell, that mech looks similar to the Hellbringer and I think I read somewhere that the hellbringer in the battletech tabletop game caused a similar stir as it looked similar to the robotech mech.

I agree, the Mad Cat would have been better than the Warhammer, but I also would have prefered to see the Uziel, It's ,my favourite 'mech and I'm yet to see one in a trailer of any kind. I also had never heard of Robotech before Battletech. I think Robotech is asian, which may be why we hear little about it. Whatever the case, I don't see how poor 'mech choice in the trailer should prevent the game being made.

@toothpik00 Actually, It's strange that this issue by Harmony Gold seems like comes out now. If you check FASA's Battetech box, the table game, there are several mechs directly taken from Robotech but the fact is that are only mechs from Macross Saga (I.E. Tatsunoko production). The Marauder, Stinger, Wasp, Warhammer, Archer, Rifleman and Locust (I don't remember if also the Battlemaster was in that anime). So what the hell wants Harmony Gold? I know... it's the second word in her name...

Robotech can be a dead franchising, but Macross (from where the robotech "franchising" was... lets say... Has been made) still aliave and strong. The last chapter of the franchising is Macroos Frontier. Type it in You Tube and take a Look.
Note: Robotech is a milk shake of Animes; in's an original series. They mixed a lot of Japanese series and make a diferent (and strange) Anime.

Well...the timeline is set in 3015...quite some time BEFORE the clans (and before the 4th Succession war)...and before the time things got fucked up by the Jihad (and Stackpole decided to reinvent Mechwarrior by turning it into a Star Wars clone with mechs...which they packaged as Dark Age).

In truth they're really the same mechs from Macross universe, not only the Warhammer/Tomahawk, but in the old board game battletech (mechwarrior) you can see all the Macross mechs in the game box, in the miatures used in the game and in a lot of other ilustrations.

This is actually an old issue. HG had sued the people that did the earlier mechwarrior games for this very mech. The lawsuit went like this. HG had claims to the destroid and mechwarrior had claims to the neurohelmet. I'm actually suprised they put the Rifleman IIC into the gameplay trailer...

Macross is robotech and it came out a while before Battletech did.
This lawsuit has been going on forever and Battletech changed some mech designs to avoid the law suit but changed it back for the trailer. turns out that was a bad move

I know they took the rifleman out but if you noticed the Jager is in mech commander and other games (A Jager is a riffleman, but with the IS name, like how a Timberwolf is called a Madcat)
Reguardless, the warhammer has not been in any game and even it's Battletech model has been changed to keep the law suit at bay. Also no rifleman was in the trailer, that was a Warhammer

They updated the Rifleman design in a later model. The older one looked like a destroid as well.

Quite alright friend, and as for an explination to where those mechs are...they weren't invented yet! Mech 5 takes place 3035, that's before the clans invade, so no Timberwolf, no Marauder, no Loki, the list goes on. If it's clan, it won't be in the game

The marauder is a century old is mech, as i remember right is is the very first avianoid battlemech design ever mass-produced. invented in somewhat 2500. so this mech IS available in 3015! get the facts straigt! also, the JagerMech is not a Rifleman in every aspect. It was invented to serve as the successor of the rifleman, which was storyline-wise a very poor mech design in terms of heat efficciency and survivability.

Mechwarrior is not actually older than Robotech, well rather Macross. SDF Macross came out in '82, Robotech in '85, first BatTech books in '84. The designs for some of the mechs in question were not around prior to '85 and definitely not in '82.
