I bought the soundtrack after hearing this theme, it just cast a spell on me; the film wasn't out yet in my country. Then I discovered the whole record was a magical piece of film music.

The word "romantic" is often misused but I think it fits perfectly here.

This film also has a marvelous, painting-like cinematography.

Kilar´s music is always magic...after discovering his masterwork for this film here on YT, I bought it yesterday, so my thanks go to you, grcinque!. Unfortunately I don´t know the film at all, what is it about? Seems to me like a very romantic, tragic film about a lady who is torn between several admirers/lovers...?

I can't stop watching this scene, I  love it, yes it's a very romantic and tragic film, full of emotions, you have to watch it, Nicole Kidman is fantastic and this scene with this music is heaven

The composer of this film changed my life; his score for Portrait was SUBLIME. So understated, at times moving and inspiring. 'A certain light' appears whenever I think of track 5, the hope that when I turn back, I will at last recognise pure love in front of me, and invite it in. It can be hell being a woman, but she knows in the end, she will survive, have her freedom and give love, and truly set a better example of humanity. Her wings cannot be clipped.

lilross1976, I love this composer too, I have known his music since I was a child. He was born in Lvov like me and now lives in Katowice in Polish Silsesia where I lived and studied before I moved to California. He wrote music for many Polish films like Promised Land, Leper and Salto as well as some beautiful piano music.

@lilross1976 @RoLorenz please, can you explain the end ... :( that it is on her mind :) everybody is saying that the love theme is opened very subtle through this film. As it is. This love to Ralph, yes? Because the stop in front the door seems like she decides to be the same as before, before marriage, to be alone... this turn to the garden did not says that she is ready to be loved by him (who was waiting her during these years... do not remember name)
