rrdrums110 is the perfect example of a douchebag who is just jealous of gavin's drum skills. since he can't harness such awesome power, he must instead make himself look like a badass and start hating on gavin

I really don't know what you are talking about but I have been playing for more than 15 years and Gavin has done nothing but inspire me. So clarify if you will what the hell you are talking about!
@TheChiFlows By the way, if you are trying to read into an argument that I had with some idiot over a year ago about Gavin, you probably will have a hard time with understanding what the hell is going on. But you obviously didn't read the rest of my posts praising Gavin and dogging anyone who posted otherwise.
@wjdsmith --- Its cool man i only got the negative comments and thought you where putting down Gavins playing..He's probably the best most original sounding player to come along in progressive rock since Bruford played with Yes. Peace !.
Hey sic. C'mon Phenomenal? That's like impossible? No, that would be Buddy Rich Tony Williams carl palmer moments of dennis Chambers stuff. And also yout entire tabla solo.
Te oaf Danny carey brings his left hand way uo over his ear forwhat? For show =fail. Thunder hammer Thor without a control bounce or dynamic conrol assist option. Gavin and his belly dancer cymbal thing and his two inch picochicoish snare drum sound is too weany for me but his control is evident at least. There was a time when I thought Thunder Thor was the only way to go. Now full dynamics is king.
And yet you criticise Dream Theatre for not moving enough on stage and not having stage presence, and you slate DC for moving too much and being too showy ? Jesus man i'm amazed anyone ever fits into your ever changing criteria of exactly how people should behave. Face it Jeff, the truth is when you decide you don't like something or someone, you change your argument everytime just so you can rant. Saying DC isn't dynamic is like saying water isn't wet. Just proves how little you actually know.
Ah Jeff jeffy jeff jeff jeff. I've just read your comments on this video. I respect the fact you acknowledge GH as a very good drummer. He is that. but i've just read all the stuff you posted about him playing too softly in this piece and tippy tapping the toy drums and not hitting hard enough. Whereas on Danny Carey videos you criticise him for not hitting quietly enough and it all being too heavy and not enough fine control. This just proves the point that you are only here for arguments

Yeah Hopefully they inspire us. But when I come to site and don't get inspired it is only natural to tell you why. There is no excitement or good energy going down in this even though it is a technical wonder. See even that doesn't work when not passion played. I've seen this guy play real well on other occasions and get that good percussion vibe. By percussion I mean it literally smacking and compressing air waves w/authority. Here it is too light like a one inch snare drum 3 inch cymbal toyed
LOL Gavin is not only playing difficult stuff here, he's playing with a great groove, and is getting a perfect sound out of every hit. Not only is he spot on like a machine, but he gets that personal sound in that only a very skilled human being can.
When did playing drums become a sport?...or popularity contest....or more improtantly a soapbox for people to run their mouth on who they think is the best drummer in the universe....Who cares...remember why we listen to them ...because they inspire us....
Sofakingrate. Careful now. You're consorting w/the enemy although I do appreciate a little back now and then. I wonder if you will get shit for it? I mean my original comment scored a -12!!. Yes I am very proud of that.
This guy is a really really good drummer when he let's it hang out. This is too Garibaldi bic fine point wimpy. No nervous system reaction. In other words not percussive enough to excite senses. get bigger stick and make human error slightly. And above all sound thicker get deeper snare drum throw away belly dancer toy cymbals get thumpier bass drum hit it harder w/harder mallet. Think Virgil Donati or (God forbid) Dennis Chambers not Garibaldi or Porcaro
@rrdrums110 I am trying to read that you DID NOT include Porcaro in the list of drummers that are have a whimsy snare, don't groove and don't excite your senses. I hope you didn't otherwise I would have to come over there and strangle some sense into you my friend. I hope we all agree that Jeff Porcaro is indisputable. Especially when it comes to those qualities you mentioned.
Well, people are closed-minded. What you said, I know you believe it to be true, but I'm saying that you may well be right. I've been drumming for 10 years, and I only partially understand what you're getting at. I know that I can't do what he's doing, and when that happens I instantly respect it. Where you're wrong is that you think it doesn't excite anybody. I can speak for myself in saying that I'll be very excited when I can play that.
He uses his double bass in such a stylistic way, i have listened to him before, but it hasnt moved me as much as its moving me now. Ive been working out of his book "Rhythmic illusions" (which my explain my first comment) and it has been a real help, as is watching the man, himself, play
Very contrite tight too dinky style to excite anybody. Finger cymbals don't impress people nor small ricky ticky snare drums or kits. Think Buddy rich elvin jones billy cobham Tony williams and then you got a guy w/tail between legs who won't go on stage. Sounds like pencils for sticks and much too techno robot pinpoint. Not human. weak machine like. Doesn't stir nervous system like big bad drummers are supposed to and do. Makes me feel relaxed which is wrong for drums right for flute.
For the first time ever I agree with rrdrums110 on this one. This vid is ok, technically advanced, etc. But it just doesn't do it for me. It's too clean, there's no fat in that!
musical and mathematical genius. extreme technicality blended with an awesome relaxed fluidity and effortlessness to his playing, which i just can't see bissonette replicating.
Gregg is also a very musical drummer. I think he plays w/more emotion and feel then most guys out there. When it comes to math and time signatures Gregg does it very, very well. I have seen/heard him play so complex stuff. The type of stuff that has you fighting to find the 1 though the whole song He has played w/Amazing musicians for years. Because of what he is capable of. The guy is as well rounded as it gets. And highly respected for his skills. Just my thoughts.
in my own oppinion, i agree that gavin would rip gregg apart although both are great drummers. i think that gavin plays much tighter and that gregg is much looser and less presice which isn't neccesarily a bad thing, but i perfer how gavin plays everything so effortlessly exact. i also think he is much more creative and plays with more precision and plays more complicated and psyncopated beats and fills and is more creative with his fills but not in a distracting mannor. just plain better to me.
Gavin is very tight and pretty spot on. But rip Gregg apart is a little over the top to me. Check out Gregg w/Maynard Ferguson and Brandon Fields. He was in his mid 20's and they both have a lot of quick spot on accents w/the band and very intricate and dynamic parts that Gregg nails no prob. Most of the stuff he does now may not call for that, but doesnt mean he is not capable. Gregg is respected for his versitility. He is great at every style he plays when in the studio. Not to be overlooked.
gregg is great, i saw him at a clinic a while ago and that guy can play, but the double bass stuff that gavin pulls off effortlessly is certainly one thing that gregg would have a hard time with. gregg is not a very strong double bass player
Greggs plays mostly hand and foot combinations w/two's/three's on the feet. He has mastered shuffles. He does not do a lot of advanced playing w/double bass. But it all works for what he does. I learned my double bass stuff from lessons from Gregg. Im am not out of this world. But I get the job done. Gavin does do more complex stuff w/his feet. It works w/his playing and probably what he practiced. Someone better at double bass then another does not make him better overall. They're both great.
i agree that it doesnt necessarily make him better over all, but earlier you asked what gavin had that gregg lacked, i am merely responding to what you asked.
this guy never fails to impress me, his technique, his mastery of music and his improvisation he is just an all round fantastic player who always puts a smile on my face - whether its with porcupine tree or stuff like this. Looking forward to his work with robert fripp from King Crimson too. Anyone who likes this check out virgil donati another scarily good drummer. Gavin = master
Hey, proggedout, I agree with you about Virgil Donati. Another drummer in his league is Thomas Lang, whom I'm sure you've heard of. I bought his most recent DVD, and he is unbelievable. Gavin Harrison is my favourite drummer, though, because I just love his feel. A true master.
Thomas is an incredible master of technique, but that is about all IMO. Just like you said, Gavin's strength is not just that, but feel and, most importantly, groove as well.
every good drummer must love groove, this is really rhytmic music :)) I love groove too!

this guy never fails to impress me, his technique, his mastery of music and his improvisation he is just an all round fantastic player who always puts a smile on my face - whether its with porcupine tree or stuff like this. Looking forward to his work with robert fripp from King Crimson too. Anyone who likes this check out virgil donati another scarily good drummer. Gavin = master
proggedout 3 years ago
Hey, proggedout, I agree with you about Virgil Donati. Another drummer in his league is Thomas Lang, whom I'm sure you've heard of. I bought his most recent DVD, and he is unbelievable. Gavin Harrison is my favourite drummer, though, because I just love his feel. A true master.

Thomas is an incredible master of technique, but that is about all IMO. Just like you said, Gavin's strength is not just that, but feel and, most importantly, groove as well.
