Those here slamming Brookmeyer are the ones who don't get it. Wynton Marsalis is an imitative child next to that guy. Kingoliver45, as an 18 year old, are you aware of Brookmeyer's numerous concerts and sessions with Ellington? Doesn't understand? Well, maybe you'll get a clue when you're 19. I worked with both guys and hands down Brookmeyer was the superior musician...hands down. Some here need to stop drinking the Wynton kool aid and get a more in depth perspective before lecturing.
@thsmithaudition So what if he did whatever with Duke, he obviously didn't use any of it. LOL You get a clue. Wynton didn't study with Duke but he did study the music of his predecessors. Wynton would play him under the table and I'm not even as much a Wynton fan as you might think. I talk about Wynton all the time, but I am honest about the negative. Some of that shit plain sucks, and most of brookmeyer plain sucks. He's just a good salesman of his charts.
@trumpetman I used to conduct for Clark Terry and I can tell you that he smoked everybody's ass, especially Wynton Marsalis. So Brookmeyer was in good company. I also know Clark Terry's, Dizzy's and Roy Eldridge's opinions of your hero. But I'm sure you would be devestated to hear them. As for charts, give me one of those supposed boring yet highly original Brookmeyer things over Wynton extracting huge parts of Ellington note for note and calling it an original work.
@thsmithaudition who said he was my hero? My hero's are the likes of Dizzy, Blue, Miles, Clifford, Freddie, Clark Terry, Louis Armstrong, Rex Stewart, etc. I like music with feeling. Too much brains and no heart in Brookmeyer. It took lots of brains and lots of heart to create what Pops and Duke created. I can't scat one brookmeyer song for you and I've had to play tons of his music in college when I should have been playing the real roots of jazz and learning what it really is. Not Brookmeyer.
wynton has done some amazing work over the years - marciac suite, he and she , etc. really great arranger, composer, player, teacher, - don't understand how people could diss him
