This song shows how creative a lyricist he is.Its amazing that he was only in his 20's when he wrote this. This is one of the most complex songs by him I have ever heard and ever.Amazing.
Not sure of the size of the club, but the shows her were most definitely advertised and were generally performed by a full band. It was as the Bruce Springsteen Band that he performed Priest so it was more than likely not acoustic.
I used to have a copy of this song which was a slightly different version. The vocal was more restrained with no 'talking' parts and the whole thing just a little more polished. Anyone got any ideas where I can find it? Cheers
He has performed it live. The legend that he never did came from John Hammond. Actually he has played it at least once - in December 1971 at the Student Prince (a fact noted by Bruce himself).
Thanks for the correction......I was always under the impression that he'd never played it live...from quotes 'allegedly' attributed to Bruce himself as well as JH. There might even be a tape out there somewhere??
No luck with the live version ... yet! Maybe when they release the video taped shows that Bruce recently bought lol. The interview where Bruce 'admits' playing this was with Ed Sciaky on 3rd Nov 1974.
...during his demo session with John Hammond, he was asked to sing a song he would never perform live....this is it....and I don't think he ever gave a reason for his comment....
