Contrary to popular belief, you CAN turn the key off and come to a stop - just don't fully release the brake pedal fully until stopped as there is a limited supply of vacuum for the power function. The steering will NOT lock on a modern car, as it can't lock until turned fully off which requires that you be in Park.
Mr. Murray, Kudos to you for your belief in consumer reports. Particularly when they end in death. As luck would have it i owned the infamous Audi 5000s turbo as a youth and now a Lexus is 350 (toyota) as an (older person :) ... I assure anyone out there that believes you can just shut off the ignition switch or put it into "n" is sadly mistaken. I am a fearless person other than GOD and the devil , except now, of government and executive decisions based on profit vs. life...
@noearaujo WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! KICK THE BRAKE! (not literally) the steering wheel will lock and it's hard to control a car with a locked steering wheel. rather do this: 1. put the shifter into neutral 2. PUNCH THE BRAKE AS HARD AS YOU CAN! 3. when the car stopped, turn the engine off imedeatly.
I agree people need to learn to drive and car companies need to smarten up cause less people buy fords due to this...i drive an explorer and regret it cause it breaks all the time....you cant sell crap can you????than why sell these
More often than not, people blame their cars for causing accidents. "Sudden Acceleration"? It takes human intervention for the vehicle to move in any speed or direction. If you're going to drive any vehicle, it's a good idea to learn its limitations and how best to handle the vehicle.
Idiot, lucky the car didn't flip. The parking break, what a fucking idiot. And least the old guy had the sense to not keep trying the breaks after they had failed to stop the engine, please.
And what was Ford to tell the other woman, that maybe a small handful of other Explorers with no fatalities had taken place? Get the fuck out of here, no corporation is going to do that.
this is just another example of how people cant drive ... traction control also pisses me off, just let off the throttle dumbasses .. in this situation, neutral and pull over to the side of the road or cost till u can find a place to get off the road and shut the vechicle off ..
Learn hw to drive you fucking idiots!!!!!! quit pushing the floor mat up underneith the gas peddle! my family and i have owened 6 explorers from 95-2001 and no one has had any problems like this. one of them has 280,000 miles on it. fuck you
No one was kept in the dark for fucking sake! ALways build up a hype with tragic music on the background! Percantage of crashes due to sudden acceleration in comparisson to other crashes is extremely small. Yet everybody who drives the car should know what to do in certain dangerous situations. Putting cxar to neutral soves the whole issue of this. Can't believe so much hype over this, when 30.000 people die everyday from starvation .
Ok....so a car's throttle sticks open? KNOCK IT INTO NEUTRAL! It can rev its little head off, while the car is completely controllable. People should know how to drive before they are allowed to drive on the road...
@the420g uhm... if that happens to a normal person, he/she would probably panic, and it's hard to be calm when you can't stop you'r car at high speed, and in the middle of traffic
@the420g I was just about to post this. Nobody knows that popping it into neutral will prevent the car from accelerating? There's a reason why you don't need to push the lock button or press the brake if its a gated shift column to go from drive to neutral.
@camargo2012 at least toyota admit to their problems and didnt require a COURT ORDER and external investigations to admit their fault.
not to mention the cover up massive cover up and lies. toyota also did something that Ford would rarely do, accept responsibility and APOLOGIZED to the American public.
@minja714 Toyota was forced by the U.S. government to recall their vehicles. They didnt volunteer. As a result they are receiving a civil penalty in the form of a several million dollar fine for poor handling of the safety issues. In fact, NASA is getting involved to help figure out what is causing the acceleration. Pretty bad when you can't figure out your own cars! Stay Away From Toyota.
@buyAmerican92 Not helping your case. Since recall is FORCED by American gov't, it could be that GM and Gov't is conspiring against Toyota. If you see a Sandiego6 News report on the lexus case, they randomly show a clip of GM dealerships. Mad sketchy.
@minja714 Toyota covered the problem up for nearly a decade. While this shit was happening with Ford their where very similar cases with Toyota. A US Government inquire uncovered an internal memo at Toyota calling the recall a win because Toyota saved money.
Is all the people who drive fords and toyotas are idiots? I mean how hard it is to just shifit to neutral? Or just shift to lowest gear? I've had a stuck throttle cable with my bimmers before, just shift to N and turn off the car. It can happen in any car. Common sense and driving skills are hard to come by these days. You only have to have a pulse to get a Drivers license in US.
Well, this is my first comment to one of my own videos. But I think it's important to respond to this backwards comment. You see, logic dictates that BECAUSE Ford and Toyota have had so many problems, we can conclude it is NOT the drivers. It is completely illogical to think that Ford and Toyota have somehow cornered the market in dumb drivers. There is a reason that these two carmakers have had the most incidents: their cars are defective, i.e. more susceptible to electronic failures.
@inurik actually you want to shift to neutral instead of a lower gear. when your trying to use the brakes and the engine is stuck on high the car is already in a lower gear in (automatic trans) to keep up speed. the brakes would slow the car down but will not stop as the engine is fighting back. now when you just have a brake failure you can go into lower gear with a little help with the e brake. i had brake failure before and got my truck to stop by using 1st gear (auto) and an e brake
Well, a think manuals should be required from now on ! Got a problem, push the clutch in. These folks are probably one of the few in England that actually own automatics. Source : American that lived in England for several years.
So.....why exactly don't these people simply kick the gear shifter into neutral? No link between the engine and the wheels means no crazy acceleration....
Actually this video is posted by the "Sudden Acceleration Information Group" in Toledo, Ohio, according to the "Whois" information on the website listed in this video info. Their "About Us" info is "The Sudden Acceleration Info Group is made up of LAWYERS, legal experts, engineers, consumer advocates, and researchers."
How come I don't see car enthusiasts & mechanics who know their way around a car well having this problem? Because they know to look at the pedal, hook their foot under it?
maybe in england they got the pedal on the wrong side :P
so convienient this video comes out before toyotas shit hits the fan. toyota has been hiding their problems for years. these people are not telling the truth. this is rehearsed. listen to speach and watch eyes. we have a 99 explorer and nothing would cause this. this is toyotas story you dumb asses. this is a decoy made by toyota.
Even if you are driving a manual, flooring it will only cause to engine to rev bounce to the redline. The car will kill you several times before it overheats itself.
well if you have the 5.0 v8 in your explorer it can run with out oil in the engine, and with sand instead. and be redlined for over 10 minutes before it blows. i seen one do it. but this video is bullshit.
I bought a new Ford Fiesta November '08 and I had problems with the power-assisted steering... Ford didn't know how to repare it (Ford's mechanics, Ford's engineers...). Fortunately I gave back the car with 5.000Km to Ford in June '09. I loose money but I think that was a correct decision, PLEASE DO NOT BUY A FORD!
@idontcare80 Where? My reserch has shown that Ford and their brands are on top in the respective segments. Lincoln outranks Lexus, Ford outranks Toyota.
But thats my research, clearly you have found different.
Nope Ford is basically trying to brush it under a rug. They aren't REALLY trying to help.
I mean I'll accept if they say. "You know what, this rarely happens since there are so many hundreds of thousands of Explorers that people drive everyday, but I'll try and help those unfortunate ones out." BUT they don't and that just gets me soo effin' UPSET. I can never trust my car AGAIN! Im making payments on it still and I don't drive it EVER NEVER!
apparently not. The car apparently has been designed so the gear stick cant be put into neutral while the car is moving. The button doesn't go in and also the ignition can't be switched off while it is moving. Happened in Australia a few days ago and the guy on the phone to the cops said these two things during the call.
this happened to my this week. on October 20th 2009. Tuesday on the way to work in my 2002 Ford Explorer.
This has to be the worst feeling ever! I had to literally throw myself off of the highway so that I wouldn't hurt or kill anyone. My plan was to jump off into a grassy area but when the car landed hard the accelerator let go. I got out of that car soo fast. It is now in the body shop but I never want to drive a ford ever again.
What don't these people get. How hard is it to put the car in neutral?
