Saw this song (and others) performed by Ray and the choir at the Royal Festival Hall a couple of days ago. A fabulous concert, loved every second of it!
I moved from australia to london in 1964 and the Kinks was the first LP I ever bought. I was 13yo. I still hold the Kinks as the best band to come out of Britain. Long live Ray Davies. Long live Australia. I shall never tire of either
When I read about a new Ray Davies record to be released in June üerforming old Kinks repertoire with a choir, I was a bit ambivalent: will this going to be kitsch and schmaltz - or simply magic? Now I saw this. It brought me to tears, it´s definitely wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!
From the U.S.A. - this guy is to British music what Mickey Mantle was to American baseball. What a performance - thank you for posting. GOD SAVE THE KINKS!
Wow, thanks for posting! Wish I could have attended that concert in person, how inspired to have a live chorus there!! From all reports, this gig was one of the best Ray gigs ever. I can see why.
He is too great to bother with knighthood, but I do understand your point. Like you, being American and I Canadian, I have a secret envy of the Brits over this business with their amazing songwriters!
We named our house Shangrila in 1972 after this song.
We are still in it and as Ray might say ",this is where we belong."
We were there at The Roundhouse 36 years later when he sang this song and the video was shot for the BBC proms
Wonderful night.

This was one of my favorite Kinks songs. I saw them in concert many times and always wondered why they never played it... This is great!

Ditto here. Hell, make him an earl at least!
