His face shows he totally doesn't care THE HELL AT ALL of em. But at least he explained why there was no name to few tracks. (Btw I love his face when he recognozes Track Three's clip xD :D) WALKER 4 EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@TRUNDLETHOR JANDEK has made a whole lot more of it, some of it brilliant. I wonder if these guys write letters to each other, or maybe if they came into contact, the universe would implode.
Cut Muriel Gray some slack here- she's fresh from Glasgow School of Art and joined The Tube as fashion correspondent, and then gets pressed into doing a crap 2 min. filler in a chaotic studio corner with someone who as far as most people were concerned was a 60s dude doing a comeback. Questions are deliberately dumb to avoid time overrunning, but suggest basic research about Walker Bros & the album. Considering how inexperienced she is, could have been worse- imagine Paula Yates interviewing!
i'm scottish and i must say this - we are very, very ignorant people when it comes to situations such as this. This man is one of music's all time greats, he's up there with mozart, stockhausen, wagner, lennon, john cage, john cale, lou reed, klaus dinger and what respect is he shown? stupid, arrogant, idiotic clowns gossiping over his interview. I Saw Faust play in aberdeen in 2005 (i think) and it was exactly the same. I was embarrassed to be part of that crowd. Shameful!!!!
@hektorpike Don't blame the Scottish people: there are annoying idiots everywhere. I have to say though, I'm pretty shocked Muriel Gray seems to be the only person who actually cares what Scott's saying. Just out of basic manners, if not any particular appreciation of him. Ho hum. Was The Tube filmed in Scotland? Sorry to make my English assumptions, but I had assumed it was filmed in London.
@peterhowardlawson It's filmed in Newcastle mate. With regards to "don't blame the Scottish people...annoying idiots everywhere"...very true! However, Muriel doesn't give a damn what Scott Walker says, remember at that time he was, I suppose, an odd curiosity to most. I just find her quite conciteful and her interview...contrived. Looking at it now, Muriel is just Muriel; and it appears to me she is almost condescending towards Scott and his abilities. That's the smaell I get anyway!
@peter Its her job to appear interested. What's an 'English assumption' ? If it's a declaration of distance between yourself and, say, English sports commentators who might say " Andy Murray (or whoever), England's number 1!" Then, that's cool man. I know most people are smart enough not to give a shit :0) finally, yeh - its shocking - a genius sitting on the couch and theyre all chatting about their previous weekend's frolics. If I was there, I'd be "shhhing"
@hektorpike The vibe of The Tube (which broadcast live) was to re-create a "backstage" party feel with live acts and presenters intermingling with the audience. The actual "serious" interviews were pre-filmed and outside the studio, and "interviews" like these were just time-fillers. Also, in 1984, nobody really knew Scott Walker's work. Finally, Muriel Gray was at this point a newbie, and it shows. She got much better later on, including an excellent filmed interview with Elton John.
Scott shifts & fidgets the whole way through, clearly aghast at Muriel Gray's patronising comments/questions. It's hard to believe how shy he is when you look at performances from the Walker Brothers era. He's very commanding on those - physically &vocally - but apparently needed a load of alcohol before he went on stage. Anyway, MG should count herself lucky that she got to sit next to this utterly gorgeous, supremely talented and sincere man.
Yes a total twit, Scott comes across as very cool but she's obviously running though a list of prepared questions without even taking in his answers . Has anyone else noticed that Bowie lifted Scott's vocal style in both the 60's and the 80's.
Man yeah I know exactly what you mean about Bowie. Bowie is also a VERY talented man and his contributions to music are very obvious, but no-one on earth can sing quite like Walker
I remember seeing that very interview over 20 years ago and thinking, that poor man... He looked so out of time and place there. Then I rediscovered him a couple of years ago with Tilt and have been bowled over ever since. Inspiring my painting as well. Scott gives the images and do the paint....
I'm sitting here in my Scott 4 T-shirt looking at my 50 Scott official and unofficial CDs and DVDs and my signed Pola X CD.. I LOVE him...most important artist in the life (along with Cardiacs).
Wow, I didn't know there were other people my age who liked him. I especially love the Drift and Tilt, I always put it on when I'm drawing it really inspires me.
@wigmeistergeneral A Scott 4 T-shirt: lucky you. I'd go for a Scott 3 one, personally, if such a thing existed. Can I ask where you got it, or did you make it yourself?
@Hexwind well u have half-wits like simon cowell to blame for the general crap thats churned out nowadays, and thats not to say there is'nt some good bands and single artists out there today.
Thanks for this gem! I think he was wonderfully patient with her. Must have been his last shot at anything related to mainstream promotion; he didn't need any of it, anyway.
Not helped by John being about 6'4" which might be why you thought Scott was shorter. I just remember Ready Steady Go many, many years ago and the sheer luck of being at an Uncles (my parent's would not let me watch pop music programmes) and seeing the guys doing Love Her.
WHY were you NOT alllowed to watch pop music programs? WOW..... I can't imagine NOT being able to do that... I LOVE 'music', I always say my 'middle ' name should be MUSIC !!
I was way too young - and my parents didn't like 'that' sort of music back then. It was a long time ago, it took my parents a long while to even accept the Beatles.
But these days there are two Scott links in my life. I work for the group Cousteau whose singer has a baritone and is often reviewed as sounding 'similar' to Scott. And I am admin on Richard Hawley's forum - he was on the Pulp album that Scott produced.
SOrry, I haven't heard of Cousteau? But I will certainly look them up. You say you work for them, what do you do ? It would be exciting being with a music group ... Richard Hawley? Another looker upper ! lol I listen to XM Radio these days....the 60's on 6 , I am lost when it comes to these newer singers, I regognize some of their names , but as far as I'm concerned they can't " hold a candle" to the that ERA of 'music' !! Nice talking to you .

We all were born in this world to walk forward and shine our soul in a true meaning. If he had continued singing WB sound on and on with such an exhausted soul like a soiled dime,in my opinion, the group wouldn't have survived as a LEGEND now. His Disney world in the UK has been taken over by that Duck's odd voice, nevertheless why has he lived in London for years?...Look at my beloved Mr.Fascist E. Now he is listening to Tilt again on which he used to say he wouldn't, because it was a nightmare.
I waited for a letter from him. It seemed to me then that it could have saved my soul. He never did so and hasn't till this day. He has tried to show his mind only by making records instead of writing them. Maybe he doesn't like an easy(cheesy)way to create something. AND he always had a dream...in the era of the Walker Brothers and even in the 80s & the 90s. How brilliantly he sang those fantastic WB songs! Who could forget them? What a young and precious shining moment!
I didn't know at all that Scott was interviewed on this program and had released 'climate of hunter'. I couldn't get any information about him after leaving London in 1977 and had already lost even my soul by this time.
I don't think she gets Scott or his music - her note pad probably came from someone else. She reflects sadly, the pop culture of her day, and of today - being shallow and ignorant.
What more can be said other than truely brillient. I just listend to his newer stuff, which to be honest i really didnt like. But hey, still a legend!
I don't know about why he disappeared, but i loved him in the early days when he made my teenage heart flutter and these songs were truly magical. It was all Scott Engel of course, the other guys were just in it for show. I had not heard this before - very Bowiesque..but his later stuff is poetry and his music has gone very strange and i just can't listen anymore :-(
He gave plenty of interviews in the 60's in the NME, Melody Maker. He was very articulate and cultured. And he was so damn gorgeous, truly beautiful, and a beautiful voice too. A shame he let his personal problems and insecurites get in the way.
"A shame he let his personal problems and insecurites get in the way". In the way of what?. surely you do not speak of the "60s stuff?,which was "produced" by "musicians pimps" for teeny clients to melt over,.. but "music" it was not!!. He IS truly beautiful, his voice IS still beautiful, his sound artistry has matured, perhaps too fast for a world that adores musicians(?) and miss the sound creators/artists like the composer Walker.
First his Walker Brothers best stuff (influenced by the Phil Spector sound and Spector was a genius) and his 60's solo albums were beautiful, excellent.
His personal problems (neuroses) and insecurities got in the way of achieving his goal as a solo artist, in that he let his record companies dictate some of his solo albums, he was always going on about integrity, but he put out some very average solo albums (TV series, movies, CBS country albums).
Agree,Jax! Scott's decision to create art instead of commodity doesn't make him neurotic or insecure--it takes courage to open your soul&guts to the public and it's crushing to not find an audience. Esp. tough for true visionary artists. If we fans were open-minded enough to trust/allow them(Scott, whoever) to take us on their creative journey, everyone might be enriched! a perfect world! : ) ps- I find him genuine & gracious toward this interviewer who appears not to have done her homework!
He should never have appeared on this lame show, but the good news is that 30th Century Man comes out on DVD in September. Only in the UK for now, though.
I was given one good advice by my mother who otherwise was not so easy to live with: she always said, if you can't say anything good, say nothing. You have no idea of who Scott Walker / Engel even is, so take your personal bitching elsewhere, would you kindly, love?
Yikes...she didn't ask him very interesting questions, but I find the snobbery from the fans here very bitter to taste. Is a character assassination of Muriel Gray for failing to fathom the unfathomable REALLY necessary, people?
Now uv started readin dis dunt stop. This is so scary. Send this to 5 ova videos in 143 minutes. When ur done press F6 and ur crushes name will appear on the screen in big letters. This is scary cause it actually works
i bought this lp when it first came out and people laughed at me for digging walker, i must thank julian cope for ttipping me to his stuff back in 1980.
Oh. good. lord. I would like to apologise, on behalf of my country, for Muriel Gray. IIRC she's a "proper" journalist now. But she no longer has that excellent mohican skunk haircut, unfortunately...Thanks for the clip tho!
(p.s. GeoGP - it *is* possible to learn to love the 80s drum sound. Eventually:)
It really isn't a bad interview, especially for being a short one. I've never heard Scott Walker's 80's sound, and it made me think if anyone was ever immune to that decade's cloud of crappy drumming & engineering.
Was living in the UK at the time this was originally shown and was riveted by Walker's enigmatic aura...I remember loving his comment about not wanting to title the songs on 'Climate' because he felt 'it would lopside them..! Only Scott could say something like that...well, maybe Miles would have said it too!
Scott is a difficult person to interview. I recall a radio show where a caller asked about the meaning of Plastic Palace People. Scott equivocated, and said it was too heavy to discuss. The exasperated caller asked if was about what she thought it was about to which Scott replied "Yes". None of us were any the wiser!
Thanks so much for posting this. Very rare and precious footage. Seems strange for him to make even this fleeting appearence in the world of pop music. If anyone has that soft drink commercial he featured in a few years later that would be fascinating too.
Its great to see scott back in action i have the album climate of hunter on vinyl and its interesting to see him during this period pity about the lame questions asked on the tube by the airhead muriel, scott looks lost for words at a few of them though hes always been a recluse and kept out the limelight for many years he back with a new album.Great video nice one for posting it.
Imagine how you would answer those questions! Why choose this time to make a comeback? Um... She had absolutely no knowledge of anything he'd done- as far as she was concerned, Scott Walker may as well have done nothing since 1967.
Well...it('s wasn't thát bad. But on the other hand, they had Jools Holland as a presenter, so they should've used him instead. Ah well, Scott is still with us, his cool self. Come to think of it, I always considered Lou Reed as cool, but he is outcooled by Scott.
It's funny that another comment mentions French and Saunders, as the interviewer reminded me a lot of their creation "Bubble" from the 'AbFab' TV show. I wonder if she was the inspiration for that character.
Wow, bachelormachines, thank you for posting this. I've never seen footage of La Walker past about 1975. Pity about the bird-brain from The Tube. (I think she's the one French and Saunders terrified so mercilessly when they co-hosted the show once.) But the man is a cordial as I would expect. His new album is being released by 4AD any minute, and a years-in-the-making documentary will be dropping this year too.
God, I love Scott. Happy 69th, you marvellous singer.

That's the DVD it's on.
someonelikethemoon 3 years ago
He should never have appeared on this lame show, but the good news is that 30th Century Man comes out on DVD in September. Only in the UK for now, though.

Please be on the alert for messages from the Scottish idiot or her pathetic friends, pretending to post genuine anomomous messages of 'support'.

I was given one good advice by my mother who otherwise was not so easy to live with: she always said, if you can't say anything good, say nothing. You have no idea of who Scott Walker / Engel even is, so take your personal bitching elsewhere, would you kindly, love?
aitska 4 years ago
Her questions were not inane.

Most journalists don't know anything anyway. Muriel Gray was no worse than any of the others. Leave the poor girl alone.
bushmustdie2 4 years ago
Yikes...she didn't ask him very interesting questions, but I find the snobbery from the fans here very bitter to taste. Is a character assassination of Muriel Gray for failing to fathom the unfathomable REALLY necessary, people?
garethac81 4 years ago
Scott, beautiful Scott.
This interviwe was painful to watch.
I felt so sorry for you having to endure this Scottish idiot.
Muriel Gray just talked over, talked against. From her point of view it was all about her.
She clearly did NOT understand the spirit and sweet soul which is Scott Walker.
Shame on you Scottish fool, Muriel Gray.
paddy9i99 4 years ago
Well, it's maybe proof positive that Muriel Gray doesn't own one single Scott Walker album. Mike S.

must have been "inane question week" in scotland--but walker actually endured it. the woman is hysterical.

Oh. good.
Eventually:)
helenahandcart 4 years ago
It really isn't a bad interview, especially for being a short one. I've never heard Scott Walker's 80's sound, and it made me think if anyone was ever immune to that decade's cloud of crappy drumming & engineering.
GeoGP 5 years ago
Not even Brian Wilson was immune, and you do get used to it.

Was living in the UK at the time this was originally shown and was riveted by Walker's enigmatic aura...I remember loving his comment about not wanting to title the songs on 'Climate' because he felt 'it would lopside them..! Only Scott could say something like that...well, maybe Miles would have said it too!
sicksylvia 5 years ago
a very poor interview from Ms Gray, do not be surprised because she did a shocker on mick jagger around that time
noxinsox 5 years ago
Scott is a difficult person to interview. I recall a radio show where a caller asked about the meaning of Plastic Palace People. Scott equivocated, and said it was too heavy to discuss. The exasperated caller asked if was about what she thought it was about to which Scott replied "Yes". None of us were any the wiser!

Thanks so much for posting this. Very rare and precious footage. Seems strange for him to make even this fleeting appearence in the world of pop music. If anyone has that soft drink commercial he featured in a few years later that would be fascinating too.

Its great to see scott back in action i have the album climate of hunter on vinyl and its interesting to see him during this period pity about the lame questions asked on the tube by the airhead muriel, scott looks lost for words at a few of them though hes always been a recluse and kept out the limelight for many years he back with a new album.Great video nice one for posting it.
steven553 5 years ago
Where were the "airhead" questions? Not a bad interview at all and not an easy subject to interview anyway. Great piece of video this.
frank7464 5 years ago
Imagine how you would answer those questions! Why choose this time to make a comeback? Um... She had absolutely no knowledge of anything he'd done- as far as she was concerned, Scott Walker may as well have done nothing since 1967.
joemgeek 5 years ago
Well...it('s wasn't thát bad. But on the other hand, they had Jools Holland as a presenter, so they should've used him instead. Ah well, Scott is still with us, his cool self. Come to think of it, I always considered Lou Reed as cool, but he is outcooled by Scott.

"...you were quite a heart throb..." people like hearing this. ha ha- she's awful! thanks for the post- scott walker uber alles!

Poor Scott!! Muriel Gray should never have been given the job to interview such a God, miss you Scott.. come back soon.
allenmark 5 years ago
Very cool. Thanks.
It's funny that another comment mentions French and Saunders, as the interviewer reminded me a lot of their creation "Bubble" from the 'AbFab' TV show. I wonder if she was the inspiration for that character.
RenoJones 6 years ago
Wow, bachelormachines, thank you for posting this. I've never seen footage of La Walker past about 1975. Pity about the bird-brain from The Tube. (I think she's the one French and Saunders terrified so mercilessly when they co-hosted the show once.) But the man is a cordial as I would expect. His new album is being released by 4AD any minute, and a years-in-the-making documentary will be dropping this year too.
Thanks again!
