I remember when I saw OMD perform live back in 1988,they were the opening band for "Depeche Mode".I asked my friend who I went with to the concert,"Who's OMD again?"My friend says,"the group who does "Tesla Girls",our school's drill team routine song, you know,it goes no no no".I remember I said,"Oh yeaaah"(back then long ago,I was a young teenage Freshman in HS).
the video, which was Andy McCluskey's idea, was lampooning the style of American music videos the band was pressured into making by Virgin Records in the hope of breaking into the U.S. market. He believed that American music videos relied heavily on attractive young female models posing and preening in front of the camera. While no one but the band appeared to get the joke, a furor did develop. It was the last time Virgin Records interfered with the style of videos of the band's singles.(Wiki)
OMD are crazy-they're totally the Kim Wilde of album versions being the exact length of the cut singles or barely longer. I DON'T GET IT?! Why do they do this. 'Tesla' in normal form only goes to 4.36-that's a time that would be considered a short cut for Simple Minds/New Order/U2/Depeche Mode/Eurythmics/Bonnie Tyler and many others that love to stretch everything to inordinate length. This and the longer 'Never Turn Away' should have been put on the album. Talk about editing yourself to death!
i loved omd, they were brill,.at the time of this song coming out,.the boy i was dateing at the time said i was his tesla girl,he use to play it really loud in his car,.happy days...the music was great then
I miss those days.....back then women wanted to be pretty, now they got reality shows with how many "tatts" they can get or how many holes they can make in their face.
McCluskey is right-handed, but originally learned to play bass guitar on a left-handed model. As a result, he plays with the strings "upside down" (i.e., with the lowest-pitched string on the bottom and the highest-pitched one on top), counter to normal practice.[7] Wikipedia
Starts with ye ol' Linn Drum machine, definitely...pretty much every pop song in the 80's used it but here it's souped up a little... You can hear a similar drum roll on Nina Hagen's "Universal Radio" (around the 30 second mark). Jeff Lynne used the same snare settings on "Video" from "Electric Dreams," sounds like. Linn Drums rocked!
The version I recorded from was the US version which notes it "New Extended". Looking into the UK discography it says 2nd version is noted as "Extra Version". To make it clear I will note it appropriately.
@TheXtro101 huh that's interesting. i knew a cheerleader and they danced to this at their school. where did you grow up?

Funny how they've got an electric guitar in the video... there's obviously no guitar in the track. lol

@HighCastle10 What electric guitar? I only see a bass... and the bass yes is on the track!

I remember this song was adopted by my High School drill team in 1987-'88(now imagine 50 girls doing their "dance-cheer" all at the same routine).

How is that bouncing drumbeat-like sound (from 0.07 on) created?
I'm dying to know!
