  • Life is worth living just for songs like this..........

  • Love this tune so much!

  • It's really magnificent!

  • Like the best of harp music , swings, is in time, and lets the tune take over from just the mechanics of making it.

    An inspired creation.

  • Gorgeous, completely transported me. Did Catriona compose it? Thanks for posting

  • This is so gorgeous. I return time and time again. All the best, Helen

  • Good news.

Transatlantic Sessions Series 4 starts TV transmission on BBC 2 Scotland (only) on Sunday 13 September 2009 at 22:50 BST (CD and DVD will follow).

  • Beautiful, just beautiful!

  • She played at my wedding just over 10 years ago. Stunning player. This song is on her recent Starfish album but she's been playing it for years. The Swan is a very old restored fishing boat that sails out of Lerwick in Shetland and the letters LK 243 is the boats recognition sign, LK is for Lerwick and the boat is number 243. Catriona also plays with the Shetland band Fiddlers Bid and duets with an excellent fiddler called Chris Stout

  • Lucky you!

  • this was played as my daughter walked down the aisle at her wedding. Perfect and very moving....LK = our initials and 24+3 =27th the date of the wedding. She had feathers on her dress...her version of a swan. Thank you Catriona.

  • gorgeous tune!

  • I love this song and Catriona is gorgeous

  • She is, and doesn't Aly Bain look like the devil? I'm just sayin...

  • I saw Catriona play this piece live and fell in love with it. It's absolutely gorgeous!

  • most beautiful and emotionnal trad song ever !:(

  • this isn't a trad song though.. ;-)

  • does anyone know where i could get music for this tune???

  • So, who do I have to bribe to get a job as a roadie for the next transatlantic sessions? I'd give quite a bit to be in the room when music like this is being recorded.

  • What a beautiful performance. Anyone know who composed the tune?

    -jcr

  • Catriona herself composed this beautiful tune.

  • power! ...and jerry douglas was der playing. his the guy playing dobro wd allison krauss' band.

  • Lovely music, is this lady related to the other great Scottish harpist Rhona Mackay ?

  • wonderful to see such masterful musicians and that empathy they have with their music..they impart something very special to their audience whether in a room or the Albert Hall.... and who wouldn't love the lovely unassuming Aly Bain....like the winds blowing across Shetland...always there.

  • thanks. Sometimes I need such a reason to keep on playing music and improve myself. Beautiful.

  • Fantastic. Was at harp heaven in Glasgow tonight where Catriona was playing and her and the rest of the harpists were excellent!

  • I'd have loved to have been there but couldn't get down to Glasgow to see it.

    Hope you enjoyed yourself!

  • Cosy meditation music...and very well played !! Thanks for uploading ! Phalaina

  • musica incantevole, l'ho messo nei favoriti.

  • Thanks for this, it is beautiful. It would be great live!

I think the 3/4 time and the tune, which sort of 'folds' over itself, is very typical. It fits well with waves and rolling in a boat, etc. The violins also provide a 'drone'-like, bagpipe bass. There is a musical phrase for that persistent bass note that I can't remember. Funny how combinations of notes can be so evocative! Why should people have a physiological response to sound?

  • Very very good

  • Catriona took part in the "Tall Ships Race". The boat she sailed in, the "SWAN LK 243", inspired her for this composition. Quite a vision, Catriona playing away on her harp whilst sailing along on a tall ship - out into the sunset!

  • watched this program on friday night and it was amazing. So much warmth.
