a chip is when you hit the ball up in the air by getting your foot under the ball,a lob is when you actually scoop the ball(usually by dragging back on it,or by having the ball stationary and lifting it up),a chip will drop quicker bacause of the backspin on the ball,a lob just floats without any spin on it at all,so is dependent on the weight of the ball
