  • will the station not have to be manned for people with travel passses?

  • Apparently not oliverjumelle. I've heard nothing about the employment of staff. With the current public service staff embargo in place I hope they are not required to 'man' the station anyway!

  • You don't know the Ennis timetable perschance?

  • Saw at the weekend they are starting to put the platform at SMB railway station in place beside the tracks, looks to be a bit further up the track towards Ennis from the old railway station house.

  • Don't know if I thanked you for the timetable - if not, thanks!

  • Update: work on the re-opening of the railway station began in late March and is due to be completed before the end of June 2009 when the stop will be opened for passengers.

  • I Saw at the weekend that they are working on the platform at the railway station, the train to Ennis slowed down alot when going past the old station house in SMB. Good to see work is finally starting. where did you read it will re-open in June? I would say the end of the summer more like

  • A County Council official mentioned it to me last Christmas. I was sceptical that it would go ahead at all in the current economic climate. He also told me that they are not renovating the old station house, instead they are putting in a ticket machine which may explain how it will be ready so soon...unless of course they are already behing schedule, in which case who knows when it will open.

  • I wouldn't trust what a Clare County Councillor has to say about it, he/she wouldn't know when Irish Rail are going to open the railway station. Irish Rail have stated it will be the end of the summer (August/September) when they will re-open the station. they don't need to use the station house anyways, a ticket machine will be fine. Planning permission for the car park and other works has not been given yet. Search planning application number 098002 on the clare co council website for info.

  • It was a Council employee, not a Councillor. Although the reopening of the station is a council initiative, this person is not directly involved in the project.

Interesting about the car park, they'd want to get a move on! If they don't sort that out soon, perhaps the end of the summer as an opening date is already out of date. Given the economic climate, I'm still surprised the project went ahead at all.

  • Money was ringfenced for this project before the recession hit so it was always going to go ahead. I would have my doubts tho on the quality of the service once it re-opens given the current economic climate. The end of the summer is 3 months away, they should be able to put down some tarmac and paint some white lines by then! Will be good when the station re-opens tho as it will save time for me as opposed to getting the train from Ennis. SMB is closer

  • Well, I hope that the train schedule suits me and that the ticket prices make it cheaper than driving, because I'm looking forward to using this service to get to work.

  • hahaha awh trev :D

  • you got a fine ass jen....in other news the station car park is.....getting there

  • im all for the station reopening but a link to shannon town and airport should be built first. this shuttle bus shite wont fly. Also dont like the way the land around the station (which is now needed for car parks etc) is owned by the main lobbyist for the reopening of the station, local FF councelor John Crowe. corrupt as fuck

  • With all the cutbacks, it doesn't look like its going to go ahead now anyway.

  • John Crowe is Fine Gael, and he's not corrupt.

  • error on the FF/FG thing but he'll have to hand over the land to the local community in order to change my mind on his worthyness.

  • So the railway station in Sixmilebridge is going to re-open in April 2009. Is there any interest among the local population to use it once it re-opens to go to Ennis/Limerick/Dublin and eventually Galway next year by train? It would be pretty bad if it re-opens and nobody uses it from the area!

  • Local Interest? They've been lobbying for this for years, and now studies show its feasible and even essential to the development to south-east Clare. The hinterland is a commuter belt for Limerick and Ennis and a shuttle bus is to be established from Shannon just five miles away. Increased motoring costs continue to make rail more attractive for many commuters.

  • Most people in Sixmilebridge work in Shannon don't they? So they will continue to drive to work in Shannon. I think the train will be popular with people going onto Dublin(as is the case with the current Ennis train service), not so much heading into Limerick/Ennis. Just out of interest, have many of your friends/family/neighbours stated they will use the train service in Sixmilebridge once it's up and running?

  • Going the other way, many air passengers to Shannon will have an alternative mode of transport from the airport to other destinations, via the shuttle bus (in the future a rail spur from SMB to Shannon is planned). Many people I know who live in SMB work in Ennis and Limerick and would certainly use the train if it was available, and those in SE Clare travelling to Dublin who use Limerick station will have an alternative. Apparently feasibility studies back this up.

  • That is one empty railway track crying out for a girl tied to the rails by a villain with a twirly moustache and a cape

  • That is one empty railway track crying out for a train to come by.

  • Trying out a new camera, JR? Can't believe I caught this on the front page of Yt while the "film" was still wet. LOL I'm expecting great cinematic efforts from you, buddy...Let's see how long it takes for something innocuous to be turned into a hater's diatribe. Should have called it "SixMileBridge the Beautiful". Ha!

  • Thanks bigben, yes I discovered that my wifes camera takes video aswell as stills. I thought I would give it a try and see what all the fuss is about, and I hope I live up to your cinematic expectations!

I will have less tolerance of the bigots than you have had though bigben. I'll execute them immediately without trial! LOL.

  • Good, take no prisoners! Don't be a Lilliputian! Ha!

  • He certainly has lived up to yor expectations Ben.

After we meet in Gainsboro, Lets ride this train and see if we can get a musician or 2 or 3 to join in the fun?

  • Yes he has...he's got the eye...and now he's getting the technique.

The train ride sounds good as long as it's not "The Midnight Train to Georgia"! LOL
