  • Wow youve done a great job with her/him

  • I have a standardbred mare names ria she is 15.3 hands high she was from S.A that's were she used to race I don't no what happend when the person we bought off had rescued her from S.A and then we got her she is very sweet she is a dark bay plz subscribe

  • I enjoyed watching you and your horse. I enjoyed even more her story of going from a racehorse to a buggy horse to now -- really being loved and enjoyed!!

  • ok so i have a 15 year old pacer very green under saddle! we have just started attempting the canter.. he cannot jump as he is pinfired in the front due to an injury on the track.. he is sound and a great ride.. any tips?? please join me on his page on facebook. ( Shadows Voyage)I can use all the help i can get.. sorry if posting his link on here upsets anyone. but nobody i know has ever retrained a stb.. Please help!

  • Wow she canters nice for being so green at it! :) ive got a standardbred thats just about upto cantering im going to use the jump technique with her aswell. Goodluck with her she looks great

  • Good luck! I'm in the process of teaching a standardbred to canter too :)

  • @cazashobs it's not that she doesn't know how to canter she was trained not to, it's part of standardbred racing u can only trot or pace. So sometimes convincing a horse it's ok to do something they were trained not to do can be hard.

  • @moomoopony Standardbreds are actually cantered quite alot when training to race, whether they are raced to pace or trot.

  • @loraleypike i live on a big standardbred farm in the U.S. and maybe you dont care there but here we dont want are standardbreds to canter

  • @moomoopony I work on two standardbred training stables here in AUS and the trainers always canter/gallop them as part of the work. Not with hopples on but just harness and bridle. Once the hopples are on they don't canter.

  • @loraleypike well i have nothing against different training methods i just know how it is here but love to hear about the different ways since stbs are one of my favorite types of horses and i am surrounded by them 24- 7

  • @moomoopony I will ask them why they canter them. I assume its to build up muscle or something but not 100% sure

  • wot? how can a horse not no how 2 canter? its u who needs help with canterin?!

  • @cazaschobs They know how to canter, the prob is that they 'run' in the canter which is not corrected when worked in the gig or jogging machine. drivers/trainers don't care about impulsion and such, this is what the riders have to teach them

  • god people are so obnoxious, im currently teaching a 12 year old halflinger to cnater along with a 4 year old POA, i have them canter after jumps 2 :)

  • Good job!!!

  • Hey there! I used to canter a lot, but I had a bad fall when the horse misunderstood and started galloping. Like, seriously 40 miles-per-hour gallop. Now I'm afraid to canter. Any suggestions?

  • @horsesrmylife78

You just have to trust your horse and get back on over time.

I had a bad fall when i was like 6 and was so afraid to ride. There is only one horse i ride now, but he`s too old now, and I`m preparing to ride a new horse.

So you just have to have full trust in your partner, and become one. If you really want something, your horse won`t let you donwn if they`re right for you.

  • @HugABull1 Thanks! I'll try that next Friday at my lesson. Come to think of it, trusting the horse got me to try in the first place!

  • Comment removed

  • @horsesrmylife78 I would work up to it slowly, the first scare is always the hardest on horseback <3 You just have to make sure everyones okay, get back on, and try again.

  • ur horse is beautiful u r so lucky to own a horse

  • Is that YOUR farm and HORSE!!!!!????????

  • love this son g im off thre saddle club bye

  • You are lucky !!

    I'm french ^^

    and you do good

sorry I'm bad for english !!

  • gr8 going with the cantering! well done my horse used to have troble going in to canter aswell i no wot its like :)

your going great with it just keep trying and youll get there

    GOOO GIRL!!!

  • i have a standardbred too. a bay. named storm. :D

  • great cantering

  • i always had big issues getting my standie to canter. She has a nice natural canter on her.

  • ummm not commenting about cantering it is about jumping all whays go strate after the jump or he/she will get into the habbit of doing it and in shows and it is jumping he will do that in a show :D

  • wow, that looks just like my horse.

  • i think you have done so well . i have a standardbred myslf and also used the jumping tecnique to get him to canter and that worked lso tryed cantering up hills that worked quite well for me :) xx

  • You look good, I can see that you're doing well training the horse. Props to you.

I love retraining standardbreds cause in the beginning they "ranter" as me and my friends call it. Where their front end is cantering, but the hind is kinda pacing. Lol. But good job!

  • aw well done hun, looking great =] good luck with him xxx

  • who cares if you have a western bridle? it works just the same as any other bridle!

  • Anytime! :)

Good luck with your guys as well.

  • i know this video is older, but she is an absolutely beautiful STB! I have a gelding who's about 10-12 years old. He was a trotter and then sat in a field for about 7 years before I got him (and I got him as a bag of bones this spring). We're learning together and videos like this make me so happy and give me hope when the going's rough! LOL. Well done and thank you for sharing. :)

  • I am riding her.

  • Who is riding him?

  • your horse is great.

  • Was your sb a trotter or a pacer? Lol I had a X pacer called Storm, I bought him sight unseen from a trekking place so I had the fun part of teaching him how to trot, he would automatically pace with a saddle on even in hand, so I had to do lotsa pole work with him lol, I never got to finish off his training though cause I had to sell him =[ but good luck with your one though! She looks like she's coming along nicely!

  • Thank you! she is doing just fine, still working with her on a lot but she's doing well. :)

  • i have a standardbred too! he used to be a pacer.

i have to re break him because he hasn't been ridden in a while, so he doesn't know what STOP means anymore!!!

i can't make him stop pacing i know it takes time but even when i take him over trotting poles he trots and then breaks into a pace!! any tips? plss

i think he's scared because he always has his ears back when i ride him :S i don't know much about his past but how can i make him less nervous and happier? thnx pm me instead:)

  • try giving him head, works with mine.

Also he used to pace all the time until i put jump up. He even started cantering to it.

I think the best way to get standards to trot and canter is by jumping.

Also mines better on hacks than in the field or an arena, he doesnt even think bout pacing on the road, maybe start with that?

    Hope it helps :D

  • I love your horse!,how is she? i cannot stop watching this video..take care with you and youre horses! :):)

  • Yeah!,well done you're doing very well you and your horse, keep it up and youre position is not horrible,it's very good! youre a fantastic rider!. :)

  • thanks very much :)

  • You're doing great with her, nothing wrong with your position...ignore the nasty comments. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to take on a horse that is not a "push button" school master, so well done there lady!

  • Well it may take awhile but i would do just what your doing, as soon as she starts pacing bring her back to a trot and then ask for the canter again. she might get tired of having to stop everytime and may just stick with the canter. I'm not a trainer or anything but that would probably be the way i would start to asses the situation, try it out and see if it works and if it didn't i would figure out something else. hope this helps :)

  • You seem like the sort of person that could help me with my standie, how do you get her to stop pacing after every canter??

beucase after a canter or half way through she will stop and pace and you have to stop her before you can canter again.

    please help

    poniesrox

  • She's going to be 11 this year i beleive. I really do not rememeber, sorry. This video is quite old, probably a couple months before this tho.

  • How old is she? When did u start teaching her to jump? shes cute!

  • Hahaha, thanks! Yes she does have quite the jump :)

  • HOLY CRAP

wish my standie would jump like that -_-" lol

  • Thank you, Wow good job with your STB to!

  • awe <3

my STB was a pacer, she has been trotting since august and loping since september. i only started her in august '08 but she has come along way!

your horse looks like she is doing good, nice work!

  • lucky i want a horse

  • I really love this breed! I ride a standardbred x Arab and it makes a great combo .... Great riding, i think ur doing a great job :)

  • HI! I know exactly how riding a pacer feels.

My horse is a trotter too, and it took a lot of time and patience for him to be comfortable with the canter. Even now, he get's stressed out. But keep up the good work! it'll pay off!

  • Thank you!! :)

  • good video, she's lucky to have you as a rider/trainer!

  • she is so pretty

  • she looks good and i think ur intructor was right

  • You are really good rider. I love to ride too! Its so fun! I am dying to get a horse of my own! You are the most luckiest person I have ever known!

  • ooooooooook.

SO i need help hah. my horse is 6 i have had him all his life i raised him and trained him balh blah..the ONLY negative thing about him , is he wont canter off the lungeline when im riding, even on it sometimes he wont canter..is there anyway i can teach him to do it with out kicking his ass? cuz everyone else says i need to beat him into it. .ummm NO. . thats not my stlye b.c he will be scared to canter the rest of his life. ha. can you get back to meee!! if you have any ideas

  • Thanks, haha yeah it's fun!

  • My horse was a standardbred x quarter horse. He was such a blast! I remember teaching him to canter...and to trot for that matter. :P It was really an adventure when he would get upset and start to pace instead of canter.

Anyways, Storm is a really cute pony and you're a good little rider! Keep it up.

  • You Are Soo GOOD At Riding !!!!!

  • i love horses.i cant buy one though cuz we dont have enough money ): your so lucky

  • Thanks for all the nice comments everyone! =)

  • I dont think she ruined it , ! i LOVE miley

  • Why , you Do it soo graceful!!

Youre lucky to have a beautiful horse

    WELL DONE !!!!1

  • you had to ruin the video with miley cyrus.

  • i love standardbreds and their canter.

i did work with one a while back getting him to canter, i know it can be tricky! It looks like you've got some "real" cantering happening there! as opposed to "tantering" where the back legs are still trotting along to the canter! I think i have vids up of me and the first canter Gerry had with a rider =]

  • pretty good*

  • wow she has a pretty canter:D im looking for a stb for barrel racing :]

  • thanks, yeah it's very smooth! i liked the lyrics because they fit well with the video and the way i thought about her but if you want to listen to your own music, knock yourself out.

  • When your horse did canter, she did it just like my horse. She has a nice smooth gait.

The only thing i didnt like about the video was the hannah montana song. but i just turned it off, and listend to a camp rock song. lol

But she looks like a very nice horse.

  • Thank you very much :)

  • Wow Thats a beautiful horse!

  • thanks. yes, her names Storm :) and we are still training on flatwork and bending etc.

  • Love your horse good luck traning Storm Right?

  • yeah it takes awhile. If you keep it up i'm sure you'll get there. :) Good luck!

  • cute horse! i almost got the canter but im mostly still on the trot ! =[ i need help on cantering

  • nice cantering cute horse

  • cute horse

  • not knowing him, and not being a real expert with behavior problems, :P my best guess would be maybe something in his back? ,may have put it out and it might be less pressure on his back when he's cantering?? maybe when he's walking theres something that pinches a nerve or something that doesn't pinch when he's cantering. it's just a guess but since he changed overnight i would guess it's something physical, maybe get someone who would know to check him over? I hope you figure it out good luck:)

  • This is a great video. Your horse seems to trust you so much :)

Tips? Since you said you've been riding for ten years...

I ride this pony named Melvin, and he's usually really good, and pretty lazy. But on Friday, he kept shooting his ears back and randomlly cantering from the walk. It was really scary and I almost fell off like, 10 times. Any idea what might've happened?

  • I'm glad it could be!! Great job with your standardbred, i remember how awesome it was when Storm cantered for the first time, then she just got better! Thanks.

  • my standardbred cantered for the first time today, this video was actually inspriring :)

  • Thanks!!!

  • wow nice job, she looks very accepting of you the way shes moving her jaw and flicking her tounge out, and hes ears flickering back and forth listening- good signs :] you two did awesome and the cantering over the jump was clearly a great idea !

  • Thank you!!

  • I thinks thats actually a very good idea to ask her to canter a jump, its obviously working well for you both, well done !

  • hey is it hard to teach them to canter? i've seen ppl train standardbreds as barrel horses and ive been thinkin bout tryin it but i would have to get the canter down pat first

  • lol! Glad to have helped, have a great wedding!

  • I stumbled across your video, having NEVER heard Hannah Montana. Turns out I love the song and I just might use it as the exit song for my wedding. Thanks for the help, even though you didn't know you were helping with someone's wedding :) I love horses too, I might put together a montage with this song and my gelding.

  • I knew how to ride, if you had read the description you would have seen it was Storm, the horse that was learning to canter since when i first got her all she knew how to do was pace. I've been riding for almost 10 years, she just didn't know how to do canter, but she did know how to jump so the jumping helped her canter. She canters perfectly now though!

  • What???? If she is learning to canter y is she jumping? First you learn walk, trot canter and then jump! That is the pattern that u learn to Horsebackride in!

  • Thanks so much everyone! She was getting the hang of it after probably 2 weeks but for her to move forewords without any hesitating, I'm pretty sure it took 3 weeks-a month to have it down pat. Not 100% sure as it was last summer but looking back that seems to be the right amount. :) Thanks again for all your positive comments!

  • She a Beautiful Horse most definately one in a million. How long did it take you to teach Storm to canter? any way good work and Storm is amazingly Beautiful.

  • Youve got a lovely riding style and a beautiful horse to match, obviously youve put lots of hard work has gone into him. Well done, he definately is one in a million.

We need more videos like this to encourage others training STB's

  • thats good that you got her to do it on the flat and not just over a jump but that is how i trained my horse to canter

  • Thanks so much!!! :D

  • She's a lucky mare to have you working so patiently with her. Don't worry about how you or she looks.Riding in field is a whole different ballgame from sterile arena work:) It's the results that count and you two get an A+ there!

  • Strom. yeah it's a nice field when it's not muddy. It is very fun, :) thanks.

  • Thats a pretty horse!!! You have a nice canter. It must be fun to canter or gallop in that field even though I havn't galloped be4! But I bet it would still be fun!!! What is your horses name?

  • i lov riding!! :-)

  • so do i

  • Uhm, the whole thing was i was training her to canter, she actually didn't know how, she just knew how to pace. Getting the momentum from jumping made it possible for her to learn. So i couldn't canter her before the jump because she still didn't know how to very well though she had learned alot by the time this was filed, not enough to canter whenever i asked on the flat.

  • ur great only that u need to work on paces before u jump, you can hurt ur horse if u dont count and "pace" before the jump. also u should canter before u jump it will be easier but overall good work

  • Sorry BlueWaterLillysGirl i didn't see your comment. thats funny you would say that because usually i get told i'm holding my reins too loose. it might also be that she hadn't been ridden for 8 years when i got her so she could still be getting back into it. I'll try your suggestiong though, if it makes her more responsive it's worth it, thanks. :)

  • well i talked to the lady and she said no like arena jumping (all the time) but some ocassional jumps a few times a week are nothing bad. you just have to watch because he had a suspensory injury that he got while racing.

  • i don't really know. i'm not really an expert but maybe try trotting/cantering poles, it might work kinda the same without the jumping. i did the cantering poles and they worked the same as a jump did but it was after she was already quite good at it. you never know though, it may work. :) Good luck!

  • What if the horse can't jump. I"m adopting a standardbred and they say that he's supposed to be off of jumping.

  • hmmm.....she's moving a bit stiffly-give her more rein. What do you have to lose? Try it-I'll bet she'll start being more responsive.

  • it looks like ur teabagging the horse

  • IT worked really well with her! i haven't tested it on any other horse so i'm not sure if it works for all of them but it may have helped. :)

  • looks like you are doing really well with her! i used to work with a small horse that didnt know how to canter and if he did get it he just raced everywhere! wish i had know the over a jump trick it might have helped! his owner moved away from our yard so i dont work with him any more

  • Thanks! What I did was ask her to canter over a low jump, when she landed she already had the momentum going to canter so with squeezes from me she slowly got more and more canter strides before going back to a pace and eventually she would take the cues from the gound too. It just takes time. Good luck with buying your horse!

  • looking good,

im going to see a horse tmoorow ( i might by her )and its STB and it sorta paces ! how did u teach it not to pace ?

  • Sorry one more comment, I also jump and i have been doing it for a couple of months and i jump now 3 ft. Trying to buy jumps to make it higher. I know im jumping high for such little time but my horse just does so great at it. Nice horse you have come far with her. I know what it feels like to accomplish something like this.

  • She is such a great horse, she doesn't come from the track but she has great bloodlines that do come from the track. She has Easy Jet's bloodlines and her grandmother is in the AQHA hall of fame. Such a talented horse those people before me put to waste.

  • Then when i finaly got on her she would trot a little but never slow it took me about a month to get her to stay into a canter for a period of time. Then she started geting her leads.

  • I had to teach my horse to canter also. I got her from this guy who left her in an arena for 6 months and she was such a sweatheart for what she went through. She was horrified of the saddle and she would literaly rear up if you tried puting the bridle on her.

  • Thanks!!

  • 1:40- 1:41 really shows how far you guys have come! thats amazing great job

  • uhm, at the very bottom of the comments it explains it all. theres also a bit of info in the "about the video" at the top :)

  • she is adorable and you have done a great job with her. I just got a new horse, and she only know walk and trot and i was wondering how did you teach to canter? my horse just like trots really fast but no canter

  • Thank you!!! It's awesome to find out that other people think she's doing well.:D

  • HOLY WHOAAA!! Great job, you have such a good seat!! When I canter my horse I still have to learn on keeping my butt in the saddle, haha.

You have such a good momtentum, you two look really good together, KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK!

  • Your A Good Rider!

    Well Done :)

  • Thanks for all the comments and tips! I really appreciate it. :)I will take a look at your vids for sure.

  • Hey i have a standardbed aswell, just came off the track, i'm trying to teach him that he is allowed to canter as well, and i do it by jumping too. Your standard bred looks like he has a normal trot lol, my boy does not really, it is very difficult, but im getting used to it.Could u comment my video's and leave some advice? Thanks. xx

  • thanks for the hope.

  • Btw, there was nothin wrng wth yuur rydin, & she looks lyk she has a reali nyc cantr actuali.

  • Oftn if yuu go 4 a ryd on yuur Sb pacr, wth a frnd wth eithr an Sb tht doesnt pace or anothr breed, & thy gallop, wth a lil encouragemnt, yuur pacr follows n a gallop.

  • Thanks! yeah she was the same way. I'd ask her to canter and she'd do a couple strides then go back to a pace. What I did was ask her to canter over a low jump, when she landed she already had the momentum going to canter so with squeezes from me she slowly got more and more canter strides before going back to a pace. Now she won't go back at all and will stay at the canter. It's harder to do it on the flat but she's gotten loads better. I hoped that helped at least a little.

    Good luck!

  • Wow, you're doing a great job. We got given a standardbred(for the riding school) and hes real sweet but we're trying really hard to get him to stop pacing and he does it for about 2 strides then goes straight back to pacing, got any suggestions?
