Niles Rodgers tells a great story about how the original lyric here was not "freak out" but "f*** you". The group had just been denied entrance to Studio 54 and as they were walking away down the street he came up with the melody but not most of the lyrics. Initially they kept thinking of the Studio 54 employee who'd kept them out and shouting "Awwww . . F*** You!" But they realized they had come up with a great beat and came up with some commercial lyrics.
