I think putting him on the team in the movie was a way to give respect. Kind of like the Make a Wish Foundation, if they could make him a part of the team in fiction then that is sort of a tribute to Sid. It's kind of like granting him a wish, in the only way they can now.

which is kind of how they all became friends in the first place becuase their all so different and they might not been friends at all if it weren't for skating and surfing!

The character Sid is kind of real haha. watch the documentary "Dogtown and Z-Boys" Peralta, Alva or Adams talk about a guy who was dying of cancer and let them skate in his pool, without worrying about coppers. He wasnt a zboy but they made a character out of him. That's where the 'Dogbowl Sessions' were - shown at the end of this movie.
