6400AZ, thank you for a well thought out and articulate post, to often people act as if you are personally attacking them and respond with vulgarity and such.
6400az, ever heard of Hardy Brown, his trademark was an elbow to the head,He knocked out more guys then Tatum an Atkinson combined no one called him dirty. Phil Villapiano also went high, called it the bottle opener. I will say I have always detested what he did to Swan from behind, but I do get tired of hearing people rip Tatum and Atkinson, when
Others played the same, you think Butkus didnt take his shots at players when he had a chance? Or Bednarick, he clotheslined more players in a seaso
Yes, I've heard of Hardy Brown and the other players you mention. Night Train Lane also went high as did Vikings Roy Winston, Bednarik had the hit on Gifford. But non of us saw it as frequently and as clearly as we did with the Raider players, and THATS why people rip on them. Villapiano on Don Maynard, Atkinson goes right for Stu Voights' eyes also the elbow to Russ Francis' face,,,, Swann or on Glenn Doughty..all from behind. These were'nt hits, they where more of a perversion.
6400az, how old are you? That was how the game was played back then, Tatum was not the only player that hit like that, nor was Atkinson the only player that went high on tackles.
Todays players might as well be wearing flags, you basically gave to tackle the quarterback at the torso, and you know why receivers run down the field with wreckless abandon, because they know there are no Jack Tatums to light them up.or Ronnie Lotts for that mattet
Oh please, I'm 51 is there anything else you need to know from me friend !! I don't deny that the game was played different back then, but going up high, and trying to scrape anothers players eyes/face, was an Atkinson specialty. There may have been players that clothlined and did things considered illegal by today's standards, but Atkinson targeted the face unlike any other. Lott was a hard hitter, Chuck Cecil was a hard hitter, Atkinson was dirty !!
The Raiders were taking out many years of frustration on the Vikings this day. After losing to Green Bay in Super Bowl II, Oakland then lost in the AFL/AFC Championship games in 6 of the following 8 seasons. Going into this Super Bowl, the Raiders had been the winningest team in U.S. sports for over a decade, had made it to at least the AFL/AFC Championship Game in 8 of the last 10 seasons, yet had still never won a Super Bowl. They were NOT going to blow this opportunity.
Holy Toledo! The Willie Brown interception is simply one of the greatest moments of NFL history. And then the run by Marcus Allen against the Redskins? Love them or hate 'em the Raiders are the best team over the years! The Autumn Wind is a pirate....
Once heard Foreman speak, of the 3 Super Bowls he played in, he felt this one was the most winnable. He did not feel Oakland was as dominant as Miami and Pitt from SB 8 & 9. After the Vikes made it 19-7, the defense made a stand and the Vikes started moving the ball. The score was 19-7 when Tatum made the hit on Sammy White but the Vikes moved into Raider territory. When Wille Hall made the interception, he knew it was over. Stu Vogt once said this Vike team was old & running on fumes
Intresting comment by Voigh and Foreman. For what it's worth, I though they where both right. Just did'nt think the Raiders where all that great, they just were'nt that dominant ( 35 years later some claim they where). Won many close games against poor quality oponents, got blown away 48-16 by the Patriots, and then squeaked by the playoffs. The Vikings where on running on fumes. Their special teams got them there AND they must have been fueled by the Hail Mary loss the year before.
Well, yes. But as a Vikings fan....I prefer others you understand ;) The sideline pick and runback ( along with the block kick) are my favorite plays in football.
But my favorite pick was in the 1973 NFC Championship Game when Bobby Bryant stepped in front of Bob Hayes and dashe 63 yars for a td....As backbreaker of a play a you'll see......... I wish I could write poetry !!
@6400az Yeah, the game in Texas Stadium...the final score was 27-10...amazingly, the score of the Dolphins-Raiders game that same day, was the exact same score,
27-10...Bobby Bryant was very pesky a DB for his time...great memories...
The score was indeed the same for both conference championship games. Bryant was one of my favorites, when he was'nt injured he was usually making the huge, big time play.
The closeup of that Viking player tearing up in his eyes starting to cry really gets me every time.....they made it to the big game four times and it just didn't happen for them. It had to have really hurt. As a Cowboys fan, I really felt for the Vikings in the 70's because they had an AWESOME team, they just happened to play in a very competitive decade against equally great teams. Probably the best NFL team to have never won a Super Bowl.
The player is Chuck Foreman. That scene of him crying, said it all for the Vikings and their fans.It just topped off the experience/drama of being a Vikings fan back then.
Even though there are more pressing concerns today, as an adult .I'll just never forget the shattering disillusion I felt as a boy, having to internalize that they had actually lost , yet still, ANOTHER Superbowl. It was awefull.............. I can't imagine what the players must have felt.
Jack Tatum was the dirtiest player in the NFL in that time by far. He got away with so many vicious hits, if he would have done that now, Rodger Godell would have fined $50.00 and suspended him 4-6 games at least.
Probably would have bee fined today, but the dirtiest player was George Atkinson. His thing was ripping at peoples eyes. How some can actually find admiration in that type of play is beyond me.
I liked the fact that the Raider's blocking was highlighted in this video. So often it is the difference between winning and losing, and so often it is ignored.
"The Vikings trailed by nineteen points, and the remaining seven minutes of the game became a despairing, hopeless quest for a goal they knew they would never reach."
@pigurine i STILL WISH sAMMY wHITE GOT MORE CREDIT OVER THE YEARS FOR HANGING ONTO THE BALL. There are WRs in the hall of Fame, and others that are going to be, that would not have made that catch. Don Maynard, Bob Hayes, Andre Reed, Marvin Harrison, Terrell Owens, Torry Holt, Chad Johnson, Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne, Brandon Marshall are not hanging onto to that thing.

That Roman Numeral in the title (VI) is 6. It should be 11 (XI). Such a large mistake.

You can edit your title to correct the roman numeral error. It should be Superbowl XI, not VI (VI is six....and this was Superbowl Eleven)
