I have a scar on my hand from a 10w Argon laser. Was adjusting a PCOAM about 4 inches away from the aperture and it just skimmed me.
The reason an Argon or any kind of gas laser is so "inefficient" is because of it's low divergence. You could take a 40w diode pumped laser that would be visibly brighter and use less power, but you'd end up with a beam of light about a meter in diameter after a km or so. I've used Argons with such low divergence they have a beam diameter of 2cm after 1km.
@weweallthewayhome The problem about saying "my lightbulb puts out more energy..." and similar things that people say is: 'your lightbulb' is extremely inefficient. A 100W lightbulb (NOT compact fluorescent lights or linear fluorescent lights) will put out about 2 - 4W of visible light, about 20W of absolutely unusable IR light, and a lot of heat. But an Argon Ion will take * kW to make 4W of light, so light bulbs are more efficient.
Do not take this as an insult, this is just an explanation!
these lasers look illegal...damn get a nerd gangster/serial killer from a ghetto, give him this. hell make jason, micheal myers, freddie crugar ect look like panzies lol
Just to put things into perspective guys, this is a 4 watt laser, D.A.R.P.A (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) have developed a 150,000 watt liqiud laser gun that can shoot missiles down and have recently made one small enough to fit on a combat plane. guess star wars isnt to far into the future after all.
Check out my homepage for further experiments using laser. There are several easy to do examples to split the beam, modulate on of the two and then recombine them to produce low frequency beats. These beats should be able to induce currents into the body to transmit sound or steer muscles if used with high power lasers. You dont even need a laser, this can be done with ordinary light and heat radiation as well. The double slit experiment mostly is done with an ordinary light source.
100% AGREE with you man, do not buy from wicked lasers they never send you your shit, impossible to get in contact with them, took me 3 months to get my money back, my order was supposedly on backorder....
this is not 4watts. more like 200mw. argon laser power is a factor of tubesize and power and a 4watt capable tube is much larger. be safe though at any power.
Well the 514.5 nm line has much lower gain than the 488 nm line, however, it has about 25% more power output when the gain is sufficient to overcome internal losses (due to the 514.5 nm transision coming from a different family of levels than the other lines.) I got this info from sams laser FAQ. Coincidentally this is one of the questions from my lab this week.
Main issue are beam-shape, colimnation, divergence and spot size. The larger the diameter of the "spot", the slower the divergence, frustratingly of course the inverse applies. A super tight spot will diverge quite quickly - still a very tight beam on the grand scale of things - but by the time it has travelled a few hundred metres, much larger than it started out. Beam shaping is also an issue as most power arrays are side emitters. Not impossible, but NOT a simple issue to sort
Nothing fake, i have a similar laser - takes about 7-9KW input (230v with a bolt for a fuse), it emits upto about 3W output for short periods (then overheats as air cooled). Lovely bis of kit and although they throw out a tremendous amount of heat from the power supplies and tube (like 4 fan heaters), the beam is not going to start incinerating everything it touches instantly. It WILL however happily set fire to soft furnishings and blacked / char wood.
@jaykim20 (the more you know) Lasers are not actually light particles with higher densities, photons for all we know are completely uniform. Based off my knowledge, a laser amplifies light (L.ight A.mplification by S.timulated E.mmission of R.adiation) and emits it in a way that all of the light waves are uniform, rather than normal light which is completely random, but still being light, it reflects off of surfaces while transferring heat energy to this paper which is why it stops at & burns it
Nice laser, I have a VERY slightly weaker version which is happy to pump about 3.5W out for around 8KW in. She is called Fluffy and runs from a 13A plug with the fuse replaced by a bit of 30A fusewire soldered in.
Only problem is it is aircooled, so is not happy to do more than about 750mW long term - short periods of 3.5W are fine though.
Do you notice that when driving it hard, the colour shifts and you end up with more of a turquoise than a cyan ?
You may well be right, my knowledge of lasers is fairly basic and while I can understand them enough to re-build power supplies and even assemble dpss kit, the inner "goings on" with an argon ion laser are a bit beyond my knowledge. the intensity doesn't APPEAR to weaken - it just APPEARS to shift from about 488nm to 500+
I emphasis "appear" as I suspect the output is decreasing, but as the eye is so sensitive to green, the actual loss is fairly well hidden.
