I remember Helen Crabtree used to tie a soft "scarf" around the horses necks when working with raw beginners like this, so the little riders could hold onto the tie while holding the reins, for balance, so the horse wouldn't get hit in the mouth so much and the rider would learn about the steady place for their hands..just a thought.
Yes! I do that too when riders are learning to post to the trot so they don't pull themselves up on the horse's mouth.
When using a "necktie" on the horse the rider can't steer well though. I do use it with beginners on the longeline until they learn to post without pulling themselves up.
The riders need to hold their hands as if they were holding ice cream cones. They need to shape their arms like a slice of pizza (triangular). That is how I get them to start riding with more of a correct form for saddle seat riding. I then start having them change things around when they advance more and do less posing and more riding.
Saddlebred Rescue is where these horses came from. They are wonderful to work with. (the bay mare with the blaze popped out a surprise baby in February).
Saddlebred Rescue looks amazing, I saw them featured on 'Fugly Horse of the Day', when I'm better at riding more 'spirited' horses (i ride aqha), I'd like to adopt a saddlebred from there.

You need to check out Saddlebred rescue, they have some AWESOME saddlebreds for adoption, which they work with and train.
What does pizza and ice cream mean?
