  • Husked Du was my first "punk" show in about '83 in Minneapolis @ 7th st. Entry. I was a little nervous cuz I was trying to figure out what punk was, was 12 and alienated and insecure. All the kids with the "look" made me feel like a square. Once they came on, though, I realized appearances meant nothing: Grant looked like a hippy, Bob was just wearing a t-shirt and jeans and Greg just looked like a regular guy. The music was so incendiary, so fast and delivered with such enthusiasm...all my ins

  • Bob comes out at 4:02 :D

  • I am sorry. At the end of that clip is that dude dressed like a matador introducing the Replacements??? That would have been the most awesome day time televsion show EVER!!!

  • @thefunboy1 It's actor Harry Dean Stanton introducing The Replacements on their infamous Saturday Night Live appearance.

  • @elwyn5150 way cool. Thanks for that. I wouldnt have picked him.

  • I am sorry. At the end of that clip is that dude dressed like a matador introducing the Replacements??? That would have been the most awesome day time televsion show EVER!!!

  • Kick ass

  • The best snapshot of what it was like to grow up in Minnesota...ever.

  • seems the host is not real hip to the band, but asks good questions and has a sincere curious demeanor.. wonder if this appearance did anything to boost their sales with the soccer-mom crowd (or whatever soccer-moms were referred to back in '86..)

  • nice shades there bob..

  • Did Bob say "I just sorta whacked him off"?

    Greatest. Band. Ever.

  • This interview guy is a clueless goofy ass

  • This clip is awesome.

  • 3 people wanted to hear Lawrence Welk

  • I directed this! These guys were great and Steve and Sharon took a leap of faith in booking them because it was such a departure for "Good Company". As I recall, we pre-taped this. They were so loud, people from all parts of the station showed up to see what was going on. I loved it. I may have the full performances somewhere. Thanks Husker-Du! I was really proud I got to do this.

  • @carsonkit nice! It looked a bit pieced together after they performed and went up for the interview. That would be some awesome rare goodies for the raw or unedited performances!

  • @carsonkit a lot of others and I would love to see those vids if you have them. Please post them or msg me!

  • @carsonkit

That is soooooo cool! Yer lucky! Bad ass!

  • HOOOSKER DEW

  • Who gives a fuck if they were gay, or not?! I could care less. They were a devastatingly awesome, KICK-ass band. Great video... so surreal. Those housewives didn't know what hit them!

  • Who gives a fuck if they were gay, or not?! I could care less. They were a devastatingly awesome, KICK-ass band.

  • awesome husker rarity, thanks so much for sharing :)

  • How good is the presenter!

  • @Gurrier Steve Adelman! A MN hero!

Seriously did Bob use an attenuator or what?

  • My favorite part is when Mould says he whacked the guy off... haha.

  • This is almost surreal.... look at the audience.... haha. MINNESOTA!

  • The housewives are still here on YouTube still horrified and uptight and posting about the band being gay - - -

  • @Monchi2006 No, only Bob Mould and the drummer were gay, the bassist is not (believe it or not) and they were never pedophiles.

  • @Monchi2006 You must have been one of those kids, right?

  • @kompooot nah....im not into hardcore :)

  • Wow! The Du, this has made my day. Can't thank you enough for posting. What a bent setting for them to be in and that makes it all the better. Love it, Love it. Thank you for posting. (these days my favorite band is sugar) bob mould is unsurpassable!!!!

  • Remember when people used to by shy on TV?

  • Bob's got a John Belushi thing going.

  • Half a song? How fucked up is that?

And Mr. Good COmpany with that stupid grin/smile...

  • I bet Bob is a high as hell, that why's he's got those sunglasses on..

  • lol all those housewifes..clapping...they must have been like wow!

  • hahahaha see the people in the crowd thinking what the fuck hahahahaha

  • "I just sorta whacked him off" lol

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA i love how they make such a big deal about how radical the group is. i mean as great as they are, compared to most punk rock, they aren't terribly radical. nonetheless great live performance of 'dont wanna know' but i hte tht they fucking cut off the song halfway thru. Goddamn mainstream TV! they should reunite and play on henry rollins.

  • Keep in mind it was 86'. They did think Ozzy was the devil incarnate in the 70's..

  • I'd like to know what is your definition of "radical punk rock", PeiceofMindmusic? Public Image Limited or NOFX? I suspect the latter...

  • well i think most of punk rock is pretty radical (sans Blink 182, Avril Lavegne, and Green Day; can you call that punk???), i mean thats pretty of the 'definition' of punk, doing things the way YOU want and not swaying to trends of normalcy or complacency, both in your art and your life.

i listened to NOFX once and didnt much care for them. but PIL are fucking great.

Have your heard of Big Dipper?

  • Don't know Big Dipper, no. Will check 'em out. What I do know is that Jon Savage's book 'England's Dreaming' does a pretty good job of defining what punk was about. And it certainly wasn't about skateboards &

putting a safety pin through your nose....

  • For being a noontime local talkshow guy, the host asked decent questions (until he got off on the 'riots' thing), and Bob gave fairly candid, straightforward answers. But, yes, it's bizarre Husker Du would be booked to a noontime talk show, right after the noon news, just before "As The World Turns."

  • i really want to learn that riff for this song.

  • This is absolutely surreal. The way the host nervously fake-laughs just before he welcomes the band to the couch for their interview is disturbing. And the band's hair, especially Grant with his mom-approved haircut - too much, lol. I applaud the courage to book these guys on this show with all the blue-haired old ladies out in the audience but I also shake my head at the utter incongruity of it all. Very strange.

  • if you think this is odd check out the vid of them on the joan rivers show..

  • Not incongrueous at all. Welcome to Minnesota. It was all perfectly normal. Lifelong resident of MPLS. Show had a HUGE teenage following and often featured music acts...right along with cooking segments. Again, very normal northern life.

  • where's the whole performance?

  • Was that Harry Dean Stanton introducing The Replacements at the tail end of this video?

  • Yes. That was a clip from 1986 where he was hosting Saturday Night Live, and the musical guest was The Replacements.

  • 0:21 "making it"! these guys were hitting the big time so its ok 2 have them on the show.

  • I go to the same high school bob mould did.

  • Absolutely priceless when they cut to the audience of mid-western,middle-age suburban housewives graciously applauding! I'm just imagining them saying to each other,"What a nice young bunch of boys, don't you think Madge?" "Oh,why yes Betty! And quite a little toe-tapper ,wouldn't you say?"

  • My mum call them Husky Du and her favourite album is Land Speed Record.

    she's 73.

  • @sleakitweasel That's brilliant. Your mum has great taste in music. Mine is sixty seven and likes Johnny Mathis. Unfortunately.

  • Hey. Steve Adelmann and his wife Sharon were total jerks. I remember when I had a mohawk in the twin cities at age 14 i was standing at a phone booth homeless and that cunt came up to me with a microphone. i was suddenly part of this twin cities punk rock kid shit. so i walked around calhoun square for a while

  • I was one of those uptown punker people too!

  • "Minnesota-nice"? That's a load of balls. This show wasn't "nice" enough to support Husker Du for the previous seven years when they were signed to Reflex and SST and were struggling. No, they only support them when Warner Bros. demands it.

  • That is so cool that this local show supported them like that. Still, I had to laugh at the audience pan. Imagining the housewives and grandmas getting into Husker Du. It would be cool to hear the other guys speak more. It's crazy how different some of the bands sounded that were on the same bill and got categorized as "punk". Husker Du, Minutemen, Black Flag, Descendents, Dinosaur Jr., none of them sound similar.

  • I never figured out how Bob could play with his guitar at his knees :o

  • yeah, wild full tilt sound.

  • I wish they showed them playing the songs in their entirety . . . without a doubt two of their best.

  • Full Tilt sound. And why are they on our show?

  • YES, this is funny but ...

some of you folks do not get it the show knew who they booked & WHY

this is a local tv show, & a local band had just signed a major-label deal, a rare occurrence, & so this show, a show that has as their mission "what's new here in the twin cities," has them on to HELP them

husker du was local, therefore this show wanted to do two things by having them on: 1) tell their audience who they were, and 2) tell the band members, "hey, good luck."

    Minnesota-nice rules !!

  • Nice haircut Grant! LOL!!!!

  • grant hart is the keith moon of indie rock

  • the host was a class act, he wasn't demeaning or snobbish at all. what the hell are you guys talking about?

  • Oh my god, I remember this show, because my and everyone else's mom/grandma watched it. This is the last show where I'd ever expect them to be guests.

But unlike most mainstream talk shows it's nice to see them actually interviewing the band, not just have them play one song on air.

  • I think the topper would have been if all the old ladies rushed the stage and started to hit Husker Du with their handbags.

  • It's astounding that these hater-commentators can operate their arms let alone a keyboard. Why do these people even open their turgid vapid consciousnesses in the general direction of other living beings? The commentator is a human being, the audience are human beings and the band didn't waltz in there and hock one up at everyone because they're not punks, so why do these commentators have to be so negative? There's no revolution in a vacuum, you elitist snobs.

  • settle pettle....very clever....stroke stroke

  • You can lead housewives to punk. But can you make em drink?

  • You can lead a housewife to punk, but you can't make her mosh!

  • f***ing bizarre and awesome

  • why are people hating on the presenter?

i thought he conducted the interview very well considering these guys are a million miles away from his usual guests. not only that, he actually got them to say more than one sentance in a row which is more than a lot of music critics have done.

he did well and the band were cool.

  • That is hilarious. If you get a kick out of clueless square interviewers you should check out the The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder Punk & New Wave DVD.

  • This is fucking awesome.

  • Love the little white-haired ladies applauding.

  • Those youngsters and their roll and rock music!

  • What the hell is this??? The Husker's on that stupid snobby old TC show. What a hoax!!! The Adlemans are the biggets SNOBS!!!!! I love Bob's mask hahahhaha!!!!

  • is he saying "replacements" right at the end?

  • That is definitely the SNL episode with the 'Mats at the end; too bad nobody can upload it here without NBC unleashing the hounds.

  • I love that ! both of my favourite bands The 'Mats and Husker Du...I saw posting of the SNL gig a few weeks back under a more 'subtle' title...I will try to find it for ya.

  • Hahaha, Steve & Sharon!

I remeber seeing that show with the Huskers. A few of us smoked some baga before school and decided to skip out so we could see this.

  • Holy sh•t, so did I. It was very much worth it.

  • This was supposed to be a reply to,

    "Hahaha, Steve & Sharon!

I remeber seeing that show with the Huskers. A few of us smoked some baga before school and decided to skip out so we could see this."

  • What Channel was this on?

  • KSTP Channel 5!

  • awesome.

  • What are they doing there......?

  • "whacked him off"?????????

  • Yeah, that was pretty funny when Bob said that.

  • Bob Mould whacking a man off? Stop the presses!

  • lmao!

  • i like bob's fake nose/glasses.

  • That's his real nose.

  • THis is hilarious,,Husker Du rule!

  • this host is such a phoney. favorite line is the fake laugh after the first song..."hahahah, come on guys, come on up"

  • Host is a total douche. Please tell me he's dead now.

Audience is clapping because they were told to. But you gotta give props to grandma in the front. She seems to really like it. Go grandma.

  • Steve Edelman... has his own big production company. Offices in Mpls and San Francisco. Lots of shows for HGTV and Food Network.

  • Eh, he's a typical host - no worse than the usual. Clueless, that's all.

  • HUSKER DU will ALWAYS rule! Thank you for posting this video. I have never seen it before. Such a shame they're no longer....

  • Ha Ha.... The bands name means " Do you remember" in Danish...... Weird, but i like that detail;)

  • Bob seemed really depressed.

  • Wouldn't you be if you were on this lame-ass show. I mean, I know any press is good press...but this is AWFUL!

  • When Bob talks about the guy that grabs his neck he says "I just wacked him off". Ok, I'm immature. Cool video!

  • I still think it was being forced to be on shows like this that caused them to break up.....

  • Naw... Good Company is a total local kitch-fest for these guys. They probably did it so the grandparents could see them play.

  • the only member of the band that isn't gay has a moustache

  • Uhh, yeah. Isn't it ironic, don't you think? Nice to see you stray away from the Poison videos.

  • I thought that was funny too. Husker Rocks

  • Haha, he mentioned Philadelphia. Most bands like Philly cause they're pretty open to everything. You can't go to a concert and hear boos there, no matter how bad it is.

  • Husker Du changed rock and roll forever! They should be worshiped around the world.

  • very cool hearing the guys sit down and talk about their music. mould is intelligent and unassuming. and of course, when he picks up that guitar, he kicks ass!

  • Doesn't anybody have Hüsker Dü on the Today Show in 1987? It was the first time I cut school...

  • Check my videos...it is up!

  • Nice of you to include Harry Dean Stanton saying "Replacements!"

  • Stuff gets pegged so much faster these days. I like how everybody here isn't sure what anybody else is going to do or say next, hosts or guests either. Wierd, but a lot more interesting than some cool one-upmanship you would get now. The 80s were TENSE, man.

  • This HAS to be the best video on YouTube. You heard it here first.

You know, the best things about this are -- when you see the audience calmly clapping when they come on. And they play that song "Don't Want to Know if You are Lonely" faster than usual, with Bob's mirror-finish glasses. Pretty sweet.

  • Yes! It's so surreal. Bob was probably strung out from speed that day, but all the lovely moms and grannies loved every bit of it. Not being sarcastic. That was the good ole upper midwest in the 80's. I was actually on Good Company. They were doing a special on my school because it was unique, progressive, and local. The host, as gay/square as he may seem, was very hip and intelligent. God bless Minneapolis.

  • I guess this is a random question, but do you like the Hold Steady?

  • Not too much. :(

  • You pulled them out of my subconcience, and I am intrigued and determined to buy all of their albums. I never go wrong on this, discovering a new band in this way. I have probably not, (but possibly) heard their music before, and can't wait to prove my point to myself again that my favorite bands have actually found me. Cheers friend! Much thanks.

  • Which school?

  • Music Tech. Now it is called McNally School of Music, and relocated to St. Paul.

  • I went on a tour there once for kicks...the guitarist of Slave Raider was our host!

  • The audience reaction shots were classic. It was funny, like a bizzaro world Husker Du, but I don't think the host talked down to the guys.

  • Why are people making fun of their clothes? Hello! Its the 80s! People dressed like that. Geez.

  • congrats on your feat chout!

  • I remember watching this after school....

  • Me too, well, I didn't watch it but I'd probably pass it by trying to find Transformers. It makes a cameo in the movie Fargo.

  • seriously? I need to watch that again sometime.

  • fargo shows this program (it is what the victim is watching when the kidnappers arrive).

but she isn't watching this specific episode

  • the Huskers were one of the greatest bands of all time...but their 80's clothes (and Grant's hairdo)really suck!!

  • That's what made them great, because they didn't pretend. They were real everyday people doing normal everyday things. Today our culture is dead and borrows shamelessly from it's past.

  • Great footage of the Huskers. The talk show host was pretty clueless and asked a lot of dumb questions. But I guess you got to give them credit for having them on in the first place. Most mainstream media ignored Husker Du at the time.

  • I bet most of the audience were more familiar with the Danish or Swedish board game of the same name than the band. I remember watching that show when I was in high school. I think it was usually winding up when I'd get home from school. Never saw this particular one, though.

  • they dressed '80's'.. ouch. Husker goes Miami Vice.

  • what a awkward show to be on!

  • NO kidding. I'm cringing for them.

  • "So, you whacked him off behind the drum kit?"
