nice try but Burt says Jerry Butler recorded it first in 1963 as Message to Martha, Lou then Dionne etc. check the Burt Bios and Library of Congress records and you'll see
Sorry...you mis-read my post. First HIT version. I knew about Jerry Butler's version, because he is one of my favorites. I own most of Butler's vinyl singles. Lou's version was played often on the radio. I don't think that Jerry's version was ever released as a single. If you had replied to me, I would have answered this 2 months ago. Thanks.
Just so everyone will know...the first hit version was by Lou Johnson, early 60's. The title was "Kentucky Bluebird (Message to Martha)". Dionne Warwick and other female singers changed it to "Message to Michael" when they recorded it in later years.
I find it great that Rufus' sister's name is Martha :) She's a great singer/songwriter too. I'm going to see Rufus perform live next week's sunday. Man, the last show was so awesome I can't hardly wait!
Rufus would never sing just any old song. It is clear that he cherishes this masterpiece by the great Burt Bacharach and that he passionately tries and succeeds to do it justice.
Can you hear me whistle with the crowd? Geeze, what a beautiful song. I'm living in kentucky now and I can see a video forming in my headof all the places tat he would be...imagination downloads again!
Whoever told him he could sing? - Listen to Dionne Warwick's 'Message To Michael' for a superbly sung version.

The best version I think of the song. Bacharach tells such a sad, beautiful story in the lyrics and music. Luv that Rufus.

@RKMARTIN The best English version. Marlene Dietrich still kills it.

This is too adorable. First time I've liked the sound of my name..I'd love to kiss him under his chin....for about 45 minutes.

I think perhaps the lyric was originally 'message to Michael', and they changed it... although I may completely be making that up.
