Her lyrics may not be as obvious as the average pop song, but compared to, for example, Tori Amos or Bjork they are relatively intelligible. It does sometimes help to have an external clue what the song is about. In this case, the song is inspired by a neglected historic walled garden near Imogen's home, which she is campaigning to get restored. With that clue in mind, the lyrics make good enough sense.
This is awesome. I love hearing these words for the sake of the words, as well as what they mean. I love Let Go and I love Just for Now and Candlelight and Not Now But Soon and I love Xizi She Knows and Propellor Seeds and this song, maybe all for different reasons, but I just... love this. This innovation. The colors. The way this transports you. The combination of media - visual and audio. Keep it coming, Imogen. I hope perhaps we can meet someday!!!
I've noticed artists like Imogen and Bjork are starting to move away from personal experiences/emotions and more into writing music about things outside of themselves. Bjork made a whole album about things in Nature with Biophilia - I wonder if maybe that's why people don't quite connect with Bjork's album and songs like this one.
Who pays attention to propeller seeds and neglected spaces? Almost no one. If it doesn't have to do with us, then we don't want to hear of it.
@eatthatmeatball I've noticed that too. On the internet, I keep seeing people say something about going how Imogen Heap should make something like Speak for Yourself again. They could be saying that they want something of the same caliber as that album, but some also say how none of her work was good after that album. It's as though they want her to stick to a safe comfortable formula Dont't get me wrong SFY is a good album to introduce people to Imogen Heap (continued)
@yukixaiko ,but the main theme of Speak for Yourself was mostly about her troubled love life. As a result, If found that some of the songs overlapped each other a little too much thematically (the album was also a little overproduced). When Ellipse came, noticeable number of fans were disappointed. Imogen Heap actually seemed more content on that album, There's only so so much songs an artist can milk about heartbreak and disappointment and misery.
@yukixaiko "Imogen Heap should make something like Speak for Yourself again."
You know what they mean by that right? They want her to do Hide and Seek again. =P
The only critique I have is, though I adore her lyrics and they're very clever, they're like a code you have to crack. If you don't watch her vlogs, read her twits or buy the commentary, you have NO idea what she's singing about or WHY the lyrics are so clever. Its an acquired taste and her lyrics are inaccessible at times.
@eatthatmeatball Heh...so true. Hide and Seek isn't her only good song. See what you mean... Ever since it got on Grey's Anatomy, many people have been cray cray over it and do not seem to know much about her other songs. As for her lyrics, they seem daft at times, but I like calling them "delightfully daft." They are whimsical, and don't always make sense at first, but when she explains them they become much clearer (I didn't understand lifeline at first for example).
@eatthatmeatball I agree completely, though Biophilia was one of Bjork's most beautiful and expressive albums: the same goes for Imogen and songs like Neglected Space, Propeller Seeds and Earth.
I do not care for this song at all. Long gone is the genius of albums like frou frou and speak for yourself which were utterly unique in sound and musical scope. Now we have "propeller seeds" and "neglected space" which feel more like modern art ideas than a meaningful song. The idea is unique (I suppose) but the meaning of these seems lacking. I am (or was) such a big fan of imogen and I really hope she can get back to her roots for emotional, provocative, creations made from real experience
Heapsongs (her new album) due to release next year 2013, 4 songs already out (including this one, #heapsong3 'Neglected Space') the others are #heapsong1 Lifeline, #heapsong2 'Propeller Seeds' and #heapsong4 'Minds Without Fear'
Ok to the people who are saying stuff like shes taking a more "artsy direction with her music". Um, when HASNT she been artsy with her music? Shes always been experimenting with sounds, shes always been about creating a musical illustration rather than a ear-candy "hit". Have you heard Half-life? The Fire? Little Bird? Hide & Seek? Headlock? Rake It In? Wireless?... Shes always been artsy!! Those are some pretty sound-rule bending songs. Some people obviously arent very familiar with this Lady.
@INF3darkgreen This music is very very different from previous work though in its scope. These new pieces feel more like modern art "ideas" than actual meaningful songs. Albums like frou frou and speak for yourself seem like distant relics of emotional beauty long gone.
@hautbois123 You must not that familiar with her work. She has way more stuff than just what you mentioned. Go look up her song "Wireless". That's an ancient one from the I Megaphone era. And then tell me that isn't a "modern art idea".
Oooh, dark. Nice. Please come back to Auckland, NZ again soon. The gig at Juice Bar at The Windsor Castle, Parnell was amazing. Also the free earthquake benefit concert in Christchurch.
@IceFrostx If I walked into an abandoned house and heard this song, I'd probably shit myself and then realize that Imogen was there and shit myself again.
@ everyone: Does it really matter that much WHY people appreciate this song? Does it really matter if someone hates it or if someone thinks it's the best thing Immi has ever written? I'm here because I love the song, not to argue and if I thought this was shit, I'd leave or wouldn't come here in the first place.
u people only like this because it's weird and unusual and u know that the majority of people wouldn't like it. u all love the fact that other people would call this weird. hate that imogen heap only appeals to these people now :(
@MarkHoulihan5 No, I like it because I just do. Whoever likes music just because it's weird, is infinitely fooling themselves. Plenty of Imogen Heap's songs have put me off, in fact I hated Hide & Seek.
@MarkHoulihan5 Dude. We don't like this song because it's weird. We like it because it is beautiful. It can bring us to tears. It can make us think. I hope you seek to find beauty in all things.
@japangiveortake even ur comment is pretentious! i do "seek to find beauty in all things" but sometimes u hav to face facts and admit that some things are just shit!
@MarkHoulihan5 I find it a bit insulting that some write off everyone who enjoys this as people who only like it for being "unusual." Saying a majority of people wouldn't like this doesn't mean that it's a horrible piece.
@MarkHoulihan5 I agree that this would make a crappy pop tune, but it's not supposed to be a pop tune. Technically it's more spoken word and in that sense, this is very well done. Imogen is still making fun music. Just because she's expanding herself, growing, and doing some "weird" things on the side, doesn't make her bad. It makes her an artist. :)
Very experimental. Heady stuff ~ perhaps a wee bit too heady? I really enjoyed her last two releases: they seemed more earthy. This isn't a negative judgment or a provocation, so please don't react as if it is. I just hope that she doesn't become too artsy or pretentious. I don't sense that in any of her earlier work.
@MarkHoulihan5 Your last comment totally contradicts this statement. First, define music. This is one song, and I'm glad it doesn't sound like anything she's ever made. That's the point of music; to change, develop, and become a part of the artist at their time of creation.
She doesn't have to be on the radio nor get millions of view. In fact millions of people have heard her in one form or the other and didn't know who it was but still gained an experience since whatever they were listening to sparked an interest and/or made them really listen. In fact Imogen is a very heard of "unheard" artist and the simple complexity of her sound is her signature. She is a true artist who allows us fans to help her create such a unique musicality and a different yet common view
Everytime I listen to this song.. Not to sound incredibly hippie or anything but it's like Mother Nature herself calling out or asking for a favor. And it's like no one's listening somewhat in the world today. Love this song <3
did you hear Lady Gaga's voice over thingy whatever in that Marry the Night music vid? Yeah.... that's junk. THIS right here is the way to do it, the way people will actually feel it.
@theverglow12034 are u comparing ghost with this masterpiece? im sure u can't differentiate the depth of the two songs. this has no comparison, no offense but i love emilie autumn, just that i don't think neglected spaces should be compared with any song.
@feedstirr don't be so sure of what my mental capacity is or isn't m'dear just stating the simple fact that the first 15-30 seconds of the song sounds identical in pitch and tone just different words. you didn't write this song, you appreciate it, duly noted but don't get all butt hurt over what i say, i never in fact said it was bad.
@theverglow12034 ;) alrightey. i was just captivated by the songwriting, the words, the melody. everything goes together harmonically. also, emilie autumn's ghost is awesome too.
@theverglow12034 Are you suggesting that Emilie Autumn was the first person to use spoken word in a song? I think not. Bob Dylan did it about 40 years ago. Or check out David Bowie's 'Future Legend' (easy to find on YouTube) from 1974.
@AbbyAmbition14 I know doesn't it!! ! Like written from the house's perspective..the more and more you look at the lyrics the more it makes sense, even the title "Neglected Space" . Imogen is a genius :)
@INF3darkgreen i never even gave a thought about what this song was about, but when i read your comment and then listened to it again, i thought about it and it just made perfect sense. genius.
Ok I listened to it a couple times - Does anyone else notice how the brush painting starts off by painting delicate precise strokes in planned patterns, and then as the music and singing builts the brush starts just slapping paint in big blotches? From the lyrics I kind of get the feeling of being tempted, falling into something, and then regretting it as it all falls apart or errupts (Im still not quite sure how to go along describing this lol) But were all immi fans here! ...Any thoughts??
I never thought that I would hear a song sung from the point of view of an abandoned house, let alone that it could be so beautiful and moving. This woman is a genius.
Idiots falling for the [Enter celebrity here] dead hoax AGAIN!? *Sigh* If she were dead, wouldn't you think it';ll be all over Google and it's new links. People have zero logic these days. THINK ABOUT IT.
LOVE her new experimental phase with the heapsongs. This is the best song of them all. So good on ALL levels, not only musically but the production is PERFECT. A complete musician in every way Imogen is, not only in music composition, but production and also as a businesswoman. PLEASE do a collaboration with Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree fame). that would be a dream come true for me not only musically but as a person who appreciates great music production. - A guy who LOVES Imogen's music.
murmuring, whispering, but not singing, like a novel of Modernism, a story without specific meaning, but let the elements 'sprout' in everyone's mind. emogen is doing her song really.
@wesingcausewerecool I know you're not actually implying that you would, but please, please--cherish yourself more dearly! Isn't that even a message to take from this song?
This is what talent means, Imogen. You break the traditional structure of a song and turn it into a poetic/melodic piece of art. I get goosebumps all throughout the song, and I'm nodding to myself, because it speaks to me and I'm kind of 'proud' of you. That's weird, I know, but hearing this and knowing all of your songs (I bought 3 CDs since I love your music so much), I'm so impressed. I'll be sure to buy your next album, and this will be among my top favourite songs of you.
Not even a minute and I'm already enchanted with this song...I love the beginning. Like she said weeks ago when she was about to starte heapsong3, she wanted to tell a story about the garden with this song, and I think she succeeded brilliantly!
I first thought of Laurie Anderson, then Kate Bush, then something even more thrilling... Imogen Heap. Thank you for showing more of your talents inside. Very intimate.
OMG!!!!!! I have waited so long to hear the next song in the album and it's finally here for me to listen to on Halloween!!! It gave me goosebumps the entire song. It was so powerful and intimidating to listen to. It's not everyday I get to hear a song that is powerful in every lyric and every note. I am never disappointed in you Imogen. You always make me proud to listen to your works of genius. -Emily ; )
what a beautiful artistic piece :) Immi you are so talented. I love this. Wasnt sure before. I think would make a perfect opening intro to your new ablum and then the song start after it!. I would love to see a more upbeat song soon though. Something dramatic and inspirational. I love the chorus in this one though so gorgeous!!!
First Lifeline, then Propeller Seeds, now THIS!! The new album is going to be fantastic!! I wish Imogen was recording one song a month instead of one every three. Oh well. I like this concept of her releasing the songs as she finishes them!
On a scale of one to ten, this is an eleven. This goes beyond anything I've ever heard. I felt that propeller seeds was something halfway between some of the more narrative songs on ellipse and this, and for me at least, propeller seeds didn't strike the right mix or elements. This was full-on creepy, amazing, brilliance. Can't stop listening to it! Its meandering path in and out of spoken and musical is enthralling. If this doesn't win some big award somewhere it would be criminal.
Imogen, your music NEVER ceases to amaze me! The structure of this new song is so interesting, it really makes you wonder and imagine so many different scenes and images. Naturally and simply beautiful!
Initially speechless. This song is something of a new style for Imogen Heap; I think we can agree that she definately pulled it off... Beautifully dramatic and emotional.
Buying all her new songs from imogenheap . com. Do the same to support her.
This is insane........ I am like oooooooooo.ooooooooooooo beautiful. I wish my mind could enter such a realm to create something of this capacity. Captivating....... Beeautiful.
I'm not sure how to describe this 'song', it is completely against any melodic structure yet musical brilliance makes me speechless. This is so different from what I am used to with her, but I want more of this poetic divinity. I wonder if this is her taking a new step, or just Immy being damn brilliant (again) ?
@JackJackLikey This is her trying something new for sure. She said so herself, and even went as far to say that it might make her lose some fans because it is driven more by spoken word than actual music. I was not entirely happy with this new piece at first, but upon second hearing......... good grief it is unbelievable. I love the "crumbling wall" voice effect....... and everything else too.
A beautiful piece of work from a great artist. Not at all what I was expecting, but that made it all the more interesting. It felt bit bit eerie. The lyrics were more like reading a poem. Once I got past the initial surprise I thought that it was really quite brilliant.
This song reminds me of Hide and Seek in the sole fact that I did not like the song when I first heard it however now I absolutely love it. Imogen Heap will never cease to amaze me! <3
@Joshjman2 The same thing happens to me a lot with immi. I don't like her songs the first time I hear them, then I'm obsessed a few listenings later. Every time she releases another song, the cycle begins again.
I can understand that not everyone will like this on first hearing, or even several hearings. I had doubts about it myself. It presents a challenge to what we expect from a 'song'. But if people persevere I hope they will find some of its beauties. It's not as immediately striking as 'Minds Without Fear' (check it out if you haven't heard that one) but I think it will stand up better to repeated hearing.
I think this song is brilliant! Love the way Immi teases us with a pretty melody/song and then slams us right back into the spoken darkness again. To the Heapmaster--thanks for pushing the boundaries. And thanks also for releasing "Minds Without Fear" at the same time, so we can dance on a more upbeat street. Hope you will release a stand alone video for this song soon!
im not feeling this I dont like the fact that she is talking and not singing but when I did hear her sing a little in here it sound good and the beat spead up a little I wish she could just remix this over and sing.
For me, this song really needed a video to make sense. Plus, turning up my speakers this time made me get into it. Sarah Maycock's artwork is perfect for it.
I love the art work too! Awesome!

did you hear Lady Gaga's voice over thingy whatever in that Marry the Night music vid? Yeah.... that's junk. THIS right here is the way to do it, the way people will actually feel it.

too bad emilie autumn already did this with "ghost"
theverglow12034 2 months ago
@theverglow12034 are u comparing ghost with this masterpiece? im sure u can't differentiate the depth of the two songs. this has no comparison, no offense but i love emilie autumn, just that i don't think neglected spaces should be compared with any song.
feedstirr 2 months ago
@feedstirr don't be so sure of what my mental capacity is or isn't m'dear just stating the simple fact that the first 15-30 seconds of the song sounds identical in pitch and tone just different words. you didn't write this song, you appreciate it, duly noted but don't get all butt hurt over what i say, i never in fact said it was bad.
theverglow12034 2 months ago
@theverglow12034 ;) alrightey. i was just captivated by the songwriting, the words, the melody. everything goes together harmonically. also, emilie autumn's ghost is awesome too.
feedstirr 2 months ago
@theverglow12034 Are you suggesting that Emilie Autumn was the first person to use spoken word in a song? I think not. Bob Dylan did it about 40 years ago. Or check out David Bowie's 'Future Legend' (easy to find on YouTube) from 1974.
DavidB5501 2 months ago
@DavidB5501 And before that, sprechstimme in Schoenberg's works, and all the way back to recitative in opera. Nothing is new under the sun, loves!

@INF3darkgreen i never even gave a thought about what this song was about, but when i read your comment and then listened to it again, i thought about it and it just made perfect sense. genius.

where did everyone get the idea she is dead?!
mysticdaniel 3 months ago
Ok I listened to it a couple times - Does anyone else notice how the brush painting starts off by painting delicate precise strokes in planned patterns, and then as the music and singing builts the brush starts just slapping paint in big blotches? From the lyrics I kind of get the feeling of being tempted, falling into something, and then regretting it as it all falls apart or errupts (Im still not quite sure how to go along describing this lol) But were all immi fans here! ...Any thoughts??

LOVE her new experimental phase with the heapsongs. This is the best song of them all. So good on ALL levels, not only musically but the production is PERFECT. A complete musician in every way Imogen is, not only in music composition, but production and also as a businesswoman. PLEASE do a collaboration with Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree fame). that would be a dream come true for me not only musically but as a person who appreciates great music production. - A guy who LOVES Imogen's music.

This is only something Imogen Heap would do. Brilliant music as always!
yukixaiko 3 months ago

@armtuk Could not agree more. NOONE has done anything like this song. At least as far as I know.

@bwyfan19 Imogen Heap seems to draw a ton from Kate Bush. If you look into her Hounds of Love album you'll find that Kate uses similar techniques.

I'm not sure how to describe this 'song', it is completely against any melodic structure yet musical brilliance makes me speechless. This is so different from what I am used to with her, but I want more of this poetic divinity. I wonder if this is her taking a new step, or just Immy being damn brilliant (again) ?
JackJackLikey 4 months ago 68

@Joshjman2 The same thing happens to me a lot with immi. I don't like her songs the first time I hear them, then I'm obsessed a few listenings later. Every time she releases another song, the cycle begins again.
marsglorious 4 months ago
I can understand that not everyone will like this on first hearing, or even several hearings. I had doubts about it myself. It presents a challenge to what we expect from a 'song'. But if people persevere I hope they will find some of its beauties. It's not as immediately striking as 'Minds Without Fear' (check it out if you haven't heard that one) but I think it will stand up better to repeated hearing.
DavidB5501 4 months ago
I think this song is brilliant! Love the way Immi teases us with a pretty melody/song and then slams us right back into the spoken darkness again. To the Heapmaster--thanks for pushing the boundaries. And thanks also for releasing "Minds Without Fear" at the same time, so we can dance on a more upbeat street. Hope you will release a stand alone video for this song soon!
