  • I wonder if the men in the 1860s would have performed this song in this way. It seems fitting for the early 1960s folk era, which was traditional, American music. It's hard to say. I wish I was there to hear it just once.

  • You guys need a CD. I'd buy it.

  • @IronBrig4 I believe they DO have not only a CD, but a few :)

  • Aside from being a beautiful song, it is a commentary on how insignificant the press felt an enlisted man's life was.

  • i have put the CD with this song on it on my b-day wish list. keep it up 97th!

  • This is a great rendition of this grand old song.

  • I wonder why all comments on this site appear TWICE?!!?

  • They really do a good job on this one.

  • This has got to be one of my most favorite Civil War songs.

  • @grimjeeper81 Yes! It is a beauty. Did yu ever run into the story of how it was writte?

  • @EMesaros I believe it started as a poem, other then that I am not aware of how it came in to being. I'd be very interested to know though.

  • @grimjeeper81 I have heard that a story appeared in a Wash. newspaper saying in huge print, ALL QUIET... and then, in very small print down in one corner, it said, "Oh by the way, a picket was shot." The next day, this appeared as a poem in response. Very soon after, someone put it to music, or wrote music for it, and it became hugely popular. I love this version!

  • @EMesaros that is very interesting. Thank you for sharing that with me
