  • Going back to Cal Speedway in March. Should be lots of 944's and 924S's there racing.....and a couple scared Hondas!

  • My video guys. 87 924S 944 Spec class. See, at :40 seconds, I'm turned in and well up on him. The turn was mine. Remember, there's another 5 or 6 feet of car in front of my dashboard. We could have gone thru the turn side by side. At :41, I've decided he's turning in on me so I try to get out of his way. Better to lose this turn than crunch the cars! I stayed on the brakes, so I couldn't have pushed the Honda. He spun around me.

  • if you look at the video closely the honda totally jerks the wheel into the porsche...crx tried to take that turn sharp....so the porsche had to spank him. nuff said

  • who cares about hondas beating porsches a car is only as good as the guy behind the wheel, but if the 944 points and establishes a point showing he's gonna pass, the CRX should honor that and give a little room unless he's more then two car lengths ahead of the person trailing him. there was nothing done wrong in this video

  • @300atsheridan There is never a reason to push someone out of the way.  When you're the victim of this and even closely competitive then you'd understand. It's just poor driving ability that took him to step out and spin the guy and it takes a smaller man to be proud of it. If I had done this I would've felt very bad.

  • @darthnefas I have some track time and have seen this happen, and have been spun out, never spun anyone out, and the guy who spun me apologized once the day was over because we both were heavy on the brakes, but I didn't see him point and establish position for the pass so when I turned into the turn he clipped me. It could easily have been the case here.... you can see he was trying to brake and he was caught in the middle and couldn't really do anything without causing more damage.....

  • @300atsheridan Okay, I'll say it again. There is, and never will be a reason to push someone out of the way. If he can't handle his car or his brakes then learn so you won't ruin someone's day. The point of what I'm saying is his comment was he "handed him a mad beating" and as you said, the other guy felt bad for turning you and I would too and if you have experience then you agree! And you did! I don't see that remorse. I'm on my third 944 so you were saying something about experience?

  • @darthnefas Not purposely there will never be a reason, but that's why people go to amateur nights and open track days, to gain experience and learn. this is unfortunate yes, but it does happen. yes the description sounds a bit cocky, but that's not my doing. it sucks to get spun around and quite honestly I was still young when I got spun I thought I was crashing, but it happens, and people learn from that. I've only had one, i'm not saying you aren't experienced.. i'm just saying it happens

  • @neonman1604 Nope you can tell from the dash. This is an early model 944. Could have aftermarket turbo, but didnt sound like it.

  • awesome video. That 944 sounds like its go no exhaust haha, i like it! I wouldn't trade mine for anything. economy car vs Porsche= PAIN-FULL to watch. I agree, one Honda was taken out, but what about the other few that got smoked and out handled? No argument for that.

    The Honda amateur tried to cut off the committed faster car from the outside line ( his fwd line ), than failed to go wide to challenge for the turn and then got turned. As a driving instructor I wouldn't give the Honda driver the go ahead to drive alone after watching " his chopping style " , it shows lack of judgement and endangers other drivers, be it " track or racing ".

    In racing he who is ahead coming to a corner gets the racing line into the corner and the other driver has to back off.

    He screwed up and spun the Honda round simple as that.

    The rookie Honda boy turned into the Porsche that had run him down everywhere; straights, brakes/turns etc. If he had any brains he would have tried to go side by side through the turn, but instead he ignored the faster moving car which was already set for the turn, apexing and the Honda boy got turned. The rookie just wasn't watching his mirrors and rightfully so got punted.

  • Did you put a manual rack in your 924S or keep the power steering?

  • @Coolbri1191 I kept the power steering in. I used it for 3-4 hour enduros to lessen the workload and it is a faster working ratio which means less steering input needed.

  • @timcomeau I see.. I have a manual rack in mine. my mechanic said it was better, although my car came with power steering not working, so we just put in a manual rack instead of fixing it.

  • I cant help but comment.... This is an interesting one. The 944(which is the shit, I own a turbo s) hits his line. The CRX cuts in on him. Look at the rubber on the road to determine the apex. It would also help if there was a clip of that same corner without traffic to show how the turn is to be made. I love 944 spec!!!! Needs to have a lot more video than it currently does on the youtube. Please upload some new ones.

  • Wow, are you honestly denying it being your fault? YOU went into the turn and slid into him. It's very clear. You even start to counter steer!

  • @spintmes Nope. Watch it again. My car didn't slide. It was stuck to the road at the turn in. Under hard braking, there was alot of weight on the front of my car. That's why the Honda spun around me so easily. If you see me countersteer, it's only because I'm hitting the brakes harder and having to balance the weight of the car.

  • @timcomeau Your car turned in but the whole thing started to slide, you stayed nowhere near the inside. That looked like a tight set of two left handers, the front of your car was way out into the quarter panel of the crx.

    As the overtaker, I'm the one who needs to establish position, which I did. I had already stopped going any faster than the Honda and I could have held my line, but he turned in on me. Watch the vid again and see the left curbing. Watch me hit the clutch and brake to get out of his way.

  • @timcomeau Tim. . got two N/A's (1st gen, both with manual racks). One's a driver and ones a parter that's pretty stripped except for good engine, T tube, suspension and front clip/doors. The driver is at best a good PCA shell. Some Weltmeister upgrades (front/rear bushings, strut brace, upgraded rotors etc. ) I'm looking to sell here in Co. Any clue what I should ask?? 1.5 - 2.5 ???

    The turn was mine. The crx driver turned in on me anyway. I tried to back out of his way, but we still had contact. Remember that my 924S has a lot of car past the windshield. The turn was mine, and we could have gone side by side, but he turned in on me.

  • it's not European for 951, it's Porsche for 951. The European cars only had less emissions not special 951 emblems ... it is Porsche's internal production code for the 944 Turbo. You should look into their nomenclature it can get confusing what with right-hand drive models and such. I had a 924 Turbo (which was a mistake) also none internally as production model 931.

  • This 87 924S had stock engine, stock headers, no cat, no muffler- just straight pipe.

  • When you downshift it seems like you go through every gear... Why not go straight from 5 to 3? Why bother with 4th gear?

  • Simply, It makes it easier to match revs well and if someone spins in front of me in the braking zone and I have to swerve hard left or right, having the car in a gear and ready to accellerate can make the difference between me avoiding a wreck and becoming part of the wreck. Last year at Cal Speedway, I was outbraking another 944 when I realized I had pushed it too far. Other cars were a little ahead of us as well. Instead of continuing to limit brake and take a chance of hitting another car..

  • ...I accellerated HARD. I had time to drive straight through the turn and clear the course before anyone turned in. Good thing I was in a gear and ready to accellerate. :)

  • Simply, In fact it was the same turn where I tried to outbrake the Honda in this video! I just drove thru it, stayed on the pavement, and rejoined the race.

  • The Hondas have a great power to weight ratio. I was only able to out accellerate the Honda because I had a better line out of the left-right turn.

  • No, not really. The 944's and 924S's are stripped down but have stock engine, brakes, and transmissions. The class is called 944 Spec and is part of NASA (National Auto Sports Association). I'm not sure about the Hondas.

    I said, Thamks for the kind words. The Zebra car in the videos was a good car , which was crashed and destroyed at California Speedway by a friend who was qualifying for a 3 hour enduro.

    From watching it over and over i can tell you are not the one at fault here, he set himself up wide before the turn and let you slip to the inside. It was a risk by him to try and cut to the inside, he could have kept it wide.

    I havn't read NASA's rules though, every racing associations policies vary(more of an SCCA guy)

    The guy turned in on me. I tried to get out of the way of his mistake so that we wouldn't have contact. He should have given me "room to race" because I had properly "established position" on him. Keep in mind that when he started turning in, there was 6 feet more of my car in front of  my dash board. It's a wide angle camera, but I was well up on him. The turn was mine.

  • Lateboy, No, you're thinking of the 2.0 liter 924. This is a 2.5 924S, which is actually a 944, but with the narrow body of the original 924.

    Skim thru the other comments and you'll see that it wasn't my fault at all. :)

  • Meh, bar the Quattro turbo, most Audis were in drag then. Fair play for Porsche taking up the challenge. It wasn't the first time Porsche worked with VAG either. (914, a very nice car now was a VW-Porsche).

  • After going in a mate's one (it's a mint one I admit) I'd rather have one over the MGBs I've owned. Better for roadholding and surprisingly comfy inside in a quirky modern way (5 gears, good driving position etc.) But they are slowly creeping up in value now compared to before.

  • I think he didn't know I was there, or he thought I would back out sooner and give him the turn. Tough to miss my car with it's huge black and white diagonal stripes! We could have easily gone through the turn side by side.
