After ww2, while the USSR withdrew from Manchuria, the Chinese were forced to give up parts of Inner Mongolia to Mongolia. There are still border disputes with Russia in their borders especially in Xinjiang and Manchuria.

What a lot of people do not know especially outside China is that KMT-USSR relations where interesting.

The USSR helped build up the KMT military in the late 1920s(Whampoa was founded with USSR help) vs. the Northern Warlords.

The KMT and the USSR clashed a few times with KMT(Zhang Zueliang) fighting border wars with the USSR in the early 1930s and fought with Soviet and Mongolian troops in Xinjiang in the mid 1940s.

The USSR actually supported the KMT much more in terms of weapons from the late 1920s to the late 1930s. Stalin saw the KMT as the only Chinese army that can resist the Japanese. The CCP was factionalized into two commie factions, the Pro Moscow Wang Man and the Maoists which Stalin disliked. Even during the Chinese civil war 1945-1949(final stage), the Soviets only gave captured Japanese weapons to Mao but politically was open to a partitioned China along CCP and KMT lines.

The Japanese were too stupid and greedy to think that they could conquer and pacify all of China by themselves. They only managed to conquer 25 percent of China and got bogged down in Central and Southern China by 1939. In that 25 percent they conquered, they only controlled the cities, the countryside in the Japanese occupied areas was rife with KMT and CCP guerillas.

@Bander1 I am not impressed by the way the Japs fought the war, esp against the USA. They kept losing and suffered many times more casualties. If Chiang had just concentrated on the Japs, they would have struggled to even control the cities. The Chinese are independant thinkers. They too could have gone the way of the implosion of the USSR. But hey, it never happened as the world had expected them to. While China prospered, Russia and all other ex-soviets became mired in poverty.

Yes, fighting the Americans was the biggest mistake the Japanese ever made. It was already a mistake invading China in the first place. The reason why Chang did not concentrate on the japanese was that he was readying for a war with the CCP, that's why he was trying to conserve his forces to finally destroy Mao(he was interrupted by the Japanese invasion).

Taiwan wasn't part of the original territory because it was a Japanese colony from 1895 to 1945, and after Japanese defeat in WWII, it surrendered all of its colonies, and Taiwan was returned to China, and the only China that existed at that time was the ROC.

Even if you do not agree with the nationalists, you cannot deny that you have a Chinese ancestry. Just listen to Taiwanese, it is a mix of different Fujian languages, where the people came from originally. Only 2% of TW pop is non Chinese
