To find how many of an item you have, you press (z), then go to Stocks. (tanned) Leather is right near the bottom of the second page. It lists everything on the map (even things that aren't yours, like a caravan). Pressing tab opens up the list so you can see each item individually, which is good for finding specific animal or goblin cages or weapons of certain quality etc. I hope this answer your question if you still had it.
Wouldn't it be better to move over a dwarf from the first archer squad to demo to the others to speed up their training in archery? I know that I've had problems with dwarves learning weapons skills because the only people around to demo skills know the defensive ones, so they spend all their training time learning Dodge etc.
putting the forges right up against a wall like that makes it impossible for dwarves to upload some of the created goods and they will become cluttered.
As for counting how much leather is left, (as well as other things), I tend to set my bookkeeper to highest precision early (like, before I have more than 20 dorfs), and then have complete counts of how many "tanned hides" (I think) are in my stocks. I like it because they get caught up to perfect precision quickly, and then never fall behind.
@theandlar And, because it occurred to me that some readers/viewers might not know how to set to highest precision, hit "n" for nobles, scroll to the bookkeeper, hit "s" for settings, and scroll to highest precision, and hit enter.
I love your Dwarf Fortress tutorials and your Let's Plays! Please make new vids!

I don't think elves get angry in the current version :( You can kill them all you want, but they won't siege you.

@digdugdiggy You have to trade wood with them. And let them live so they can inform their leader of the treachery.
