I am very offended that they keep trying to blame the experience of the athlete. Sounds like a death penalty for making an error in judgment. Since crashes do happen the facilities should be designed to safely contain the crash. Even the most experienced are constantly pushing the limits and will crash.
Agreed: a very full investigation needs to happen. The luge track is dangerous, ostensibly...it killed a brave young man. This tragedy could have been averted. So, Nodar, you have saved lives. You will not be forgotten.

if a female had designed the track it would have been 100 meters long with a 5% grade and no curves in it because that's all that women can offer as far as engineering goes...real exciting...yawn
The track is what led the luger's death; The death was caused by one of several steel poles, none of which should have been anywhere near the track, to begin with.
The existance of the unavoidable death poles was initially the fault of the track engineer...Yhe fault for their existance, in the years afterward, lies squarely with whomever was in charge, at whatever time, for each of its 5000 or so runs.
"The track is build to contain the body within the track." Yeah, right. This was the fastest curve. Even though such an accident has never happened before, it doesn't mean that it WON'T happen. They didn't take that into consideration when they build the thing. In a high-risk sport like luge all the "what-if's" should be considered. And don't give me that crap about inexperience. If he were inexperienced, he would've never made it to the Olympics to begin with!

Sorry I didn't explain that better. I was quoting what some of the other lugers said about lowering the start.. hated it. It's a dangerous sport.. it's amazing there aren't more deaths. Netting might have helped. It's sad that it takes a death before extra precautions are taken..look at plane crashes.

They spent more time trying to sweep and rake and shovel these courses than any Olympics in history. All the athletes complained that the courses and the weather sucked. Many of them crashed because of it and became injured. The commentators made constant remarks about how the weather sucked and the conditions of the track sucked because of the weather and how hard it would be do the event properly,etc.

Canada wins with the most gold medals, which i personally think that's what counts on a tournament. Who gets to have the most on first place, total of medals any country can bring many athletes and easily win, which in this case was USA, but Canada wins with the most gold, meaning number 1.

In Torino, Italy - Canada got 7 gold, 10 silver, 7 bronze for a total of 24.
In Vancouver at least so far they have 13 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze for a total of 25.
The numbers aren't that different, only one more medal. The quality of the medals IS VERY DIFFERENT. So you are telling me that in a mere 4 years time Canada was able to train athletes capable of DOUBLING THEIR GOLD MEDALS? BULLSHIT. I CRY BULLSHIT BULLSHIT BULLSHIT.

Not to mention their shitty course killed a guy.
They spent more time trying to sweep and rake and shovel these courses than any Olympics in history. All the athletes complained that the courses and the weather sucked. Many of them crashed because of it and became injured. The commentators made constant remarks about how the weather sucked and the conditions of the track sucked because of the weather and how hard it would be do the event properly,etc.

even if canada cheated, as some of the comments are suggesting, that only takes away 1 or 2 gold medal wins that was determined by judges. This still leaves 11 or 12 gold medal wins that didn't involve judges, such as racing events, hockey, curling etc... still leaving Canada in top gold medal position. so for the hater americans, step out of the limelight for a sec, and be gracious for once. there's always next year. either way, great show from all the olympic athletes from around the world!

Its seems like there were definitely some safety measures that could have prevented his death like raising the side walls after the turn where he died. im guessing the possibility of something like this happening was nil in the minds of the designers or they would have thought of it originally. i wonder what compensations, if any where given to the family. very tragic accident...

Actually an Amercian designed the track, so thats a hard pill to swallow. It was caused by his own errors, THOUGH i dont think it should of cost him his life, when he fell off hitting a poll padded with steel or not would kill him instantley.
