  • Ahhh! get me back to PronunciationManual

  • It sounds like you are saying "meem" ( rhymes with dream ). This is not correct.

The root is memetic engineering - so the shortened "meme" is pronounced like "mem".

Anyone who says differently is wrong.

Memes don't exist, tell your friends.

  • @bludtaino1 So, based on the word "genetic," how would you pronounce "gene"?

  • @bludtaino1

Dawkins coined the term and he himself says "meem".

  • I see you driving round town pronouncing it "me me" and I'm like, "Fuck you!"

  • @Vaderrules14 Two of my friends pronounced it "Mee-Mee".

  • Ive been saying Meh-may. CLOSE ENOUGH.

  • I say may-may :P Spanish XD

  • I was actually right all this time? Damn, that's a first.

  • I think people get confused because "même" in French means "the same /or/ similar", which relates to the definition of a meme, i.e. the constant use of an illustration (with the addition of consistently different text). Thanks for the video!

  • 9GAG was here

  • People say meem but I will continue to say may may baby, lawls!

  • Meh...I still feel like pronouncing it like "mem". Or maybe "me-me", lol.

  • meme has many definitions. Maybe.. just maybe. the internet Meme is pronounced as Meh-Meh since it's invented that way. it's a whole new different word and has nothing to do with the blabla that websters say.

  • @franhound I agree.

  • i didn't understand the first 2 times, but after the 3rd time he said it i finally understood!

  • MEH MEH

  • @Braxl91 that's what I've always said...

  • thought it was "MEH-MAY"

  • i thought it was mem-ee >_>

  • I thought it was said like maymay...

  • At first I thought it was"meh-meh"

  • Its 'meem' because the last 'e' makes the first 'e' a vowel. Meme.

  • Had no idea how to pronounce it but apparently I was right :-)

  • i was saying it like memay:P

  • the way this guy pronounces it would mean that the word is spelled "meem"

until something changes, its pronounced 'meh-meh' according to the current spelling

  • I'm still going to pronounce it meh-may...

But at least now i know I'm wrong XD

  • FUCK!

  • Noooo, it's MAY MAY.

  • It's pronounced the way the guy is saying it it stfu

  • I used to always call it a mehmeh. :P

  • I pronounced it "mi-mi" for a long time because that's how I was told it was pronounced. About a year later, I learned how to say it. Yay learning! But seriously guys, pronouncing it wrong is going to make you look like an idiot.

  • All of you still calling it me-me or meh-meh are simply admitting to your stupidity in public without a shred of ignorance to fall back upon.

  • @Pauzle That didn't make sense. Before trying to act intelligent learn to type a sentence that makes grammatical sense. " a shred of ignorance" = " You don't have a shred of lack of knowledge to fall back on".

Lack of knowledge is why people make the mistake, so my good sir, are you an idiot?

  • @colbyrules8 Allow me to elaborate. This video teaches the commenters how to pronounce the word. Therefore they can no longer use ignorance as an excuse for saying the word incorrectly. You can't always replace a word by its definition and reach the same coherent sentence. The phrasing in my comment was correct. Try taking away "shred of" and then even with your definition the sentence will make sense.

  • @Pauzle What about the fact that many people here are hispanic.

So we tend to pronounce it as it would sound in spanish, not english.

  • @TheRiotPunkGirl Meme originated as an English word, though. So while Hispanics may, at first glance, regard the pronunciation as me-me, it is still wholly incorrect. For example, take the word tortilla. The double l's are pronounced as a y, but to any English speaker who hasn't seen the word they would simply pronounce it as an L sound instead. Tortilla is pronounced with a y sound no matter if the speaker is hispanic or english. Likewise, meme is pronounced "meem" even if you are Hispanic.

  • @Pauzle God, finally someone!

I'm a spanish speaker, and yes, in Spanish it would be pronounced meh-meh, but it's not a damn Spanish word. It's English, so we all should pronounce it accordingly. I do, and I don't complain. If I'm gonna speak in any language, I procure to do so correctly. Gotta respect languages. And I personally hate when people don't when they do know they're wrong. Let's say Tortilla as 'Tortiya' and Meme as 'Meem'.

    Is that so hard?

  • @Pauzle Good,Your point is very clear, I like it!

What I meant is that hispanic people call it Me-me because sites like Cuánto Cabron (it's like 9Gag or 4chan) have spread it that way, all around the internet. We mean the same thing. It's not cuz we wanna be ignorant, it's just that we're not used to call it other way, it doesn't sound right.

Even if I showed this to my friends, I don't think we'd call it "meem", we wouldn't identify it.

Not being rude, just my point of view (:

  • @Pauzle Actually if you want to get picky double L is spanish is pronounced like a J. Tortilla should be pronounced "Tortijah", even though most anglophones pronounce it like a Y.

  • @Kazas5 Hey, there. Actually, different Spanish speaking countries pronounce the double L differently. In most Spanish speaking countries, it is pronounced like a 'Y', but I believe it's in Argentina where they pronounce it as a 'J'. I know there are more countries that pronounce it the same way, but I've only heard of Argentina.

  • i still call it meh meh lol

  • I'm still calling it me-me
