  • hope somebody uploads some of the gig onto you tube !for me to indulge myself ! "Hanging Out " was the track i saw them play in Chatswood and "Man gone overboard "would give my wife s kidney to be coming over to watch these guys !!!!

  • A second Machinations show has been added at The Bridge Hotel, Rozelle, Sydney, on Saturday Feb 25. Tix on sale via Moshtix. No tour, no other venues, this is it. Tickets moving fast. Guest DJ is Stephen Ferris.

  • i remember them doing a cover think it was Sister Sledge type song ? at a pub gig outside Chatswood (83 ish ) wish i was going to watch them with you guys !!DoThe little Heroes still play ever ? also a top band i saw whilst out there ! wish i had stayed in your wonderful country alas my dad buggered off so i ended up back in cold england !!

  • cheers youmay1969, would love to come to watch i would be glad to buy you guys a beer ! this band should have been pushes in uk . i remember talking to Fred before a gig and saying need for tour in UK and think some "Frankie goes to hollywood " PR man was supposed to be in charge of promotion ,but alas nothing happened, will seriously look at flights etc ,god love you mate !!!

  • Saw loads of bands in the early 80 s era in aus as emmigrated with folks and had been in bands in uk .machinations were my favourite ,saw them quite a few times ! sat here at 7.45 pm in wet cheshire ( england ) seriously considering trying to get a ticket and a flight !! no doubt sold out in seconds ??

  • @SuperPlatty Almost a third of the tix have sold based on word of mouth, social media and the sign out the front of the pub. Full scale advertising will start in the next 2 weeks and we expect the last two thirds to go pretty quick.

  • @yomay1969 you ve made my day bud , god i would love to fly over !!! this band if been "pushed " in UK would have had a huge following , i remember buying "esteem " on a tape ! then driving my dads "ute" to watch them , sleeping in the back a little bit worse for wear !!! still play their music to my friends in england whom agree how good it is /was,,would love to see them again !!! LONG TIME DEAD eh ???

  • @SuperPlatty guitarist Tim Doyle will shout you a ticket and a t-shirt if you fly over

  • btw to motorything he wasn't a fag, just was a real camp time for rock!

  • i used to hate Freddy thinking he was a wanker but saw them at Caringbah INN and went backstage as an 18 yera old smart arse muso. They furnished me with VB and happily spoke about music, gigs, etc. They were really cool dudes and a moment I remember well from my youth as a real surprise. Serious musos and straight up top blokes.

  • Wicked, loved this song. I was 15 years old when this came out, wonderful memories, great times.

  • cant wait till Bridge!!!!

  • you guys are no angels...and girls too....so you know what...YOU'VE GOT NO SAY IN IT!!

  • Tix went on sale today for Machinations reunion Friday February 24, 2012, at the Bridge Hotel, Rozelle (Sydney). Available via Moshtix (moshtix.com.au) and the venue (02 9810 1260). This is a reasonably intimate venue so if you wanna go you need to move - there is no tour, this is it. The lineup is Fred Loneragan (vocals), Tim Doyle (guitar), Tony Starr (synthesizers), Nero Swan (bass) and John Mackay (drums). First headline show in 23 years.

  • @yomay1969 I have my tickets..yayyyyyyy ;-)

  • Hi people with good taste. Any one know where I can access "The Letter" by the this awesome Aussie band???

  • machinations reuniting for a show in sydney january 2012

  • @yomay1969 Not with me in it

  • Still a great aussie dance track.

  • Its the music and the lyric not the video you gen y fools and this has it in spades.

  • Just awesome really. Not gay but he just had a very kooky and unique way of being very cool. As many do, I wish this music style would revisit us.

  • @thebigsignguy -well said.........Fred is sort of "Joe Cocker meets David Byrne" !

  • Inez Amaya. Have Loved you since the Whisky Au Go Go Days. Beautiful Lady, Precious Voice .

  • NOW ON I TUNES IN AUSTRALIA....HAVE A LOOK !

  • my fave is intimacy , those creepy eyes. i don't think they did an lp in 1988.

  • Time Machine please..lol

  • Love it..saw them support Ultravox in '82 Capital theatre Melbourne and lots of other times..great band.

  • this was a very underated band. I was in the building trade in Melbourne Aust and we were rebuilding a place in Nicholson St. I was on the roof for a week with a big rock box and every time 2RR pumped out this song we all put down the tools and rocked.

  • One of THE great ground breakers in the Aussie 80's pop revolution. The Machinations always turned on a great tight live show.

  • There's just something about Fred.....

  • the woman at 0:27 creeped me out

  • I have big music on CD,its a great album.

  • @xxxdids have this gem on vinyl the day it was released....a treasure never to be parted with!

  • so what ever happened to this band. could anybody sum up their band life in a few scentences. they seem inspiring

  • @DRstaszak Machinations failed to achieve as much commercial success, either at home or abroad, as did many of their peers. Nevertheless, the band had a cult following in dance clubs.

  • @DRstaszak Hi...just a quick note for you...Fred (great singer) was badly injured in a hit-by-car cycle accident just when they were to be BIG...I am now 50 and followed them from their birth in the club scene. Best live band of their genre and a pity Fred was lost to entertainment.

  • what a great song this is.

  • Freddy Loneregan, So geeky, yet strangely sexy...

  • I hear this on the radio from time to time and I didn't know what the title was, so I thought the chorus said "You've got no sediment." wtf.

  • Saw these guys a few times in the 80,s, fantastic. Wish you could access their stuff on iTunes !

  • you can reuquest songs to i tunes

  • @tbabe1968 Have tried a zillion times but no luck so far, thanks anyway

  • I love the Asian chick in this clip!

  • These guys had a lot of potential, it's a shame about poor Fred. I had the pleasure to meet him in the 90's. Don't know where he is nowdays. Anyone know?? PS: trivia buffs, anyone know how the band got the name?

  • @peterwindle the last time I saw Fred he sold me my mac at a company called Micro Seconds in Sydney he told me he still did the odd gig now and then

  • I knew him from there as well, because I used to work at Logical Solutions (they used to own Microseconds) Well, it's been a while since he was at Microseconds, so I'm not sure where he is nowdays.

  • Aerosmith or Machinations? pretty much the same.

  • 80's music pure talent; whats wrong with todays music???

  • Some things about 80's music that are lost today..... Space, phrasing, and contrast. These days it's a case of "find a half-catchy tune and ride it through the whole song". turn up the volume in the mix (so there is no space) , polish it till it is perfect, add a totally irrelevant film clip, and hey presto... a modern, 5-minutes-of-fame song.

  • @gergatronic couldnt agree more! :)

  • One more thing about this band, the lead singer was an absolutely mad dancer. When he got going he was epitome of how to dance 80's style.

  • To all the people saying that there isn't any good music coming out of Australia these days.....I have to disagree, have you ever heard of Cut Copy and Empire of the Sun?

    What about Parralox?

There is amazing music coming out these days, it's a shame if you miss it all.

I myself love music from the past as well as the present.

You don't have to choose just one era a decade.

  • Is it just me or did anyone else get scared at 26 seconds into the song....

  • great song !! actual musicians !! compare this to the shit going around these days!!

  • dead rite there sammymeow

  • God just enjoy it will you people; this is an awesome song and it is a pity Australia is not turning out such brilliant talent these days.

  • People for God's sake give the sexual orientation thing a break! Who cares! I'm straight and I still think this is a standout tune from the 1980's. Australian music was great then......I wonder what happened?

  • The 80's was a curious time. Guys could be "flamboyant" or even "girly" without being gay. Girls could wear shoulder-padded suits, or generally boy-like clothes, yet not be lesbian.

Therefore all those irrelevant comments about whether it's gay or not are made even less relevant by the fact that anything from the 80's really can't be judged for "gayness". So stop it.

  • The San Miguel in Cammeray on Wednesday nights with Sardine-giving Tony Starr a hard time about the drum machine!Punks,Mods & New Wavers. You were a good time-thanks.

  • Still a great song!

  • They were a great band. I saw them live and they rocked. I heard that Fred had a bike accident later on and broke his spine :( Not sure what happened after that.

  • funnily enough, in the 80s, nobody would have considered him, or this music, gay. In live performance, the Machinations could be a very aggressive, muscular type of band. I always remembered thinking that fred Loneragan looked like he was going to punch someones head in. Generation Y needs to get over themselves and stop referring to stuff they dont understand as "gay"

  • @motorclassica - Could not agree more!

  • @motorclassica can't believe, you took the word out of my mouth, this new so called aggressive music is for pussies, this is more aggressive than slipknot will be with their bullshit music..

  • @motorclassica

out slang has evolved. your just out of the loop.

this shit is gay as hell.

    that doesn't mean its bad!!

  • @motorclassica

sorry i thought he was gay then and he sure as hell looks gay now

  • @motorclassica Get over themselves? Gen Y!?!?! As if...

  • @motorclassica

bought their albums.... Ive seen them, " Live " they rock/dance/funk....

and for what its worth, keep DJ'ing gen Y.

  • I think he is gay , he moves too much

  • @doctor1409 TOOL

  • At last a song about my wife and her mother telling me why they are both going out to hit the clubs and those dirty dishes have my name on it.

  • I must have missed something here, never knew this was a gay song (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Good music anyway, thanks for the upload nzoz1985.

  • I saw these guys live as a kid and they were fukken great! eurogliders and koo de tah were also awesome live.

  • Straight, Gay ?? Who cares? This is a rippa aussie track, fantastic bassline.

  • this guy always looks like his busting for a piss singing, but are so good live, adhd high energy performance the man they call fred with rubber arms and legs like pogo sticks gives it his all.9/10 machinations.

  • Farking awesome. Haven't seen this since HS. Gay or not according to some tosser's comments? Who cares? What an awesome performer.

  • ripper track

  • My Hearts on Fire was better. I saw them live once before they went big and they were great. Fred had some sort of accident as I recall. Anyway, again, like many bands, they leave and breakup but they stay in one way. Reunion time hey Fred ;)

  • Hey Thanks nzoz, ah this music brings back great memories in probably the best years of my life. Great music , magic times. Thanks again.

  • Is that Obama doing back up vocals?

  • thank you, thank you, thank you! i have been humming this song to myself for so long! i could never remember who sang it! you're amazing!!!! :)

  • @melcantgetausername

melcantrememberthesong will be a good one for ya too lol

  • does anyone know if this is on itunes

  • Sydney and Melbourne were speed city in the 80s. The gear was cheap and very potent, compared to what's around now.

  • @d777j777l777 most good music these days comes from Brisbane and Perth, Sydney and Melbourne have had their time, they produced excellent music in the 80's but the bands now due to Triple J and the internet, the good bands, no longer come from those places as they have lost their relevence.

  • brilliant song! this song takes me bakc! thanks for posting it! anyone got this on mp3/cd?

  • they didnt get the recognition they deserved ,because they lived in the shadows of so many other great bands that where around at that time, but these guys were great all the same especially live, the lead singer a bloke that had adhd and rubber arms and legs like pogo sticks really got the dance floor pumping,i judge on performance and these guys were 9/10.

  • One of my favotites from the day. Awesome, thanx nzoz.

  • If Fred is being judged for LOOKING Gay then that would've covered 2/3's of the music induatry at the time! They al had that look. Unless they were COld Chisel, Midnight Oil or The Angels most bands had the "Nod" look.. Get over it please and enjoy the music as it was intended.

  • Just saw Fred play for the first time in 20 years at the sandbelt on the 14th may.

I doubt he is gay as a chick threw a bra and panties at Brian Manix. I am pretty sure I saw him take a sniff....

  • gay, gay, gay, gay.. who the hell cares? It's 2010. The world has moved on.. Get with it..

  • @michaelcsm not for the better ..... it's bred knobs like yourself I suppose that's a plus.

  • @titandistributors you might want to take a good long look at yourself.. and see how backward and narrowminded you are.. and btw, I'm not gay.

  • What are you talking about being Gay for. Frig. I saw these guy's in Melbourne and thought I'd look them up. What's happened to society these days? Poof's are still vermon slime bags no matter any generation!

  • Another classic song. I remembr tryin to impress the ladies at the Cronulla Workers to this tune and others.. Thank god I was pissed as a parrot, that was my only excuse!!!

Thanks NZ, another hidden classic dude.

  • These blokes were one of my favourite bands great sounds...

  • Even if it was the year 2020 the 80s music has won

    all the awards in music.

  • is this guy busting for a piss signing this song, because he sure looks like it,what ever the case its not a bad track, and yes i think he would make a good sean penn double, he looks nothing like schmacher the car racer.

  • it's 2010! seriously.. does it really matter anymore?

  • The good ol days lots of memeories of the 80s, and some wild hair doos,

    loved it.

  • A brilliant song from the Oz group Machinations, Fred was a style master, and the song was not a high charter from memory, but certainly one of the backdrop songs to Australia in the eighties... Go Fred!

  • this track rocks with volume up and more base

  • the 80's rocked solid!

  • this is big! I like it! :X

  • He looks like a young Hannibal Lecter :-)

  • Rockin track

  • dont you mean aids spreaders.bloody shit shovers go and rot in youre sickness.

  • WOW.......... These guys were bloody brilliant!

Thanx for taking me back to the happiest times of my life.

    The 80's rocked!

  • this band was very under rated, see them in Melbourne 85 they gave a very electric stage appearance, with the lead singer having arms of rubber and legs like pogo sticks, had really good boppy music to dance to. go the 80s'

  • Another great aussie band.........

  • lol he looks like Michaël shumacher indeed!!

  • I never realised that Michael Schumacher fronted a rock band - the lead singer is a complete lookalike

  • ROFL LMAO - fuckin hilarious!

  • 2:14 - my god ur right! HAAAAAAAAA

  • Ayrton Senna was a better driver though

  • Michael Schumacher my arse.Looks nothing like him. Shit, he looks more like Mr T than Michael Schumacher. Like butterflies evolve from a caterpillar, I'm sure this guy morphed from a Tick. He's one crazy dude.

  • lol, whos michael schumacher? i think he kinda looks like sean penn during the 80s. hilarious! great song nonetheless, never heard of this before!

  • Ruthless People

  • great song to dance too. good club retro

  • to me one of their greats

  • killer track. one of my favs

  • Great song from a great band that i saw many times live & was always guaranteed of a good night's dancing. freddie had a brilliant dancing style, suited the music perfectly.

  • Why don't today's bands have the talents of the bands of the 80's. Stuff like this was everywhere of a Friday and Saturday night all over Sydney. The crap of today is to give 5 minutes of fame then they are nobody's.

  • Nah Handyman. Look further. Tried Architecture in Helsinki? The Herd?

  • @TheHandymanQld Rubbish.

  • @TheHandymanQld I agree its good music and i hate todays music but as you said 5 minutes of fame.... so where are these guys today.......are they nobodys

  • Lol my mates dad is Tony Starr.

  • bring back the '80s!

  • fred let me up on stage at Rooty Hill RSL to have a crack on this song....fuckin good times Fred.

  • Comment removed

  • I'll take a couple of bags of what she in on. :)

  • No, you genius. It's a stick of chewing gum.

  • terrible singer live, he used to look down at his fold back wedge, great band though ! :)

  • saw them live too at epping and a few other places :) good live but short concerts 45 minutes? and fred seemed surprised when i shouted john wayne (old old machinations song) but those were truly the good old days when we had FUN

  • In early 1997, Machinations with Loneragan reconvened for some live appearances, which they hoped would lead to new recordings however these plans never came to frution.

  • Heard this song on a cassette an Aussie friend of mine named Gavin had. It had a bunch of songs by The Cure, Bronski Beat, Bananarama and the dub of Shannon's "Give Me Tonight" which was sick! I saw this video on some UHF video channel with poor reception. The version on the cassette was a remix/extended version. Nice to see this again.

  • really underated band.

  • Machinations...oozed talent and creativity

  • I'm so sick of the fucking small minded dickless woders out there going gay gay gay. If itr wasn't for us gays there wouldnt be much fucking else to look on youtube....Bitches!

  • Agree. I'm getting bored of reading stupid childish comments about sexual orientation. I really do wish people would make some mental progression.

I don't even know if Fred (the singer) was gay, but then again, being a straight man who has no possession of a gaydar, I just simply cannot tell if he is gay or just thin.

  • @nzoz1985 : The purple braces /might/ say 'gay', but whether he is or not - I guess only he can tell us. Didn't even occur to me until saw these comments - I always thought it was a bit of a pisstake on the whole "wall street" look people were rocking in the 80s.

  • @nzoz1985 - HAHAHA - Gay or just thin... and a sharp dresser! Also, those bicycle clips above your elbows, I wish I was gay so I had a reason to wear them! :P

  • @nzoz1985 he he so there no fat gay people haha ...mate apart from being the guardian of the music era you are a comic too ! keep up the good work ..cheers

  • @nzoz1985 its all the morons born in the 90's and after that label alot of 80's singers gay .

  • LMAO!!!!! Awesome response!

  • @TTLTOY1 all gays should be neck shot your lucky we live in a pacifist society run by homos and hippies or you would have been exterminated long ago

  • @aussiebluemax Go find a dark corner, curl up , and DIE! You miserable CUNT!

  • @TTLTOY1 don't sweat it the poor small minded person has not achieved much probably, unlike the Machinations who gave it a go. As for sexual preferences, who gives a stuff.

  • @TTLTOY1 Blame the homo-phobic americans, it's all thier fault.

  • young Hannibal Lecter

  • Oh my God!! he's freaking identical!!

  • cretin

  • agree

  • Just saw Fred play for the first time in 20 years at the sandbelt on the 14th may.

Voice is still good. I am pretty sure he is not gay as a chick threw a bra and panties on the stage at Brian Manix. I am pretty sure I saw him take a sniff..

  • Great song. Bloody horrible fashion - but it was the 80's I guess...

  • Ahh. Australia as it once was!

  • Yes, plenty of stuff from the 80's from Aus that never made it to NZ. Unbelievable really. Plenty of excellent home grown AUS music. I'm only catching up on it now!!

  • the villa noosa in the 80's the best memories of my life

  • LOVE IT!!! BRING BACK THE 80'S...

  • gay?

    mint song!

  • Who knows with 80's clothes?

All the new romantics looked effeminate, these guys just look like normal 80's musos. When the music mattered more than the stylists!

  • Does anyone have a copy of Machinations - ain't Necessarily So. It is the best version I have heard of this song and cant find it anywhere

  • Wow im a kiwi & cant remember dis 1 frm da 80's

  • Where the F****have you been then?Obviously not here(earth)

  • This is sensational. I remember it from the 80s, but didn't appreciate it like I do now.

  • Miami Horror wants to be Machinations. Machinations wants to be Belouis Some. :)

  • Comment removed

  • True, but the "Pressure Sway" era didn't look like Belouis Some, nor did it sound the same. All the same, I prefer Machinations, as this was where Julian Mendelsohn cut his teeth on the amazing dance production work he continued to do with Pet Shop Boys and Talk Talk.

  • That chick singer is getting the munches lol,she is chewing on that gum like a little trooper.

  • i had to watch it... she's tripping me out! What's she on!??!?!?

  • @nzoz1985: She dropped a Lonergan.

  • LOL

  • I never looked at the chick - I was too busy looking at how wired the singer was. Thats too funny - wonder if she has any mouth left LOL!?! Great band great song!!

  • THIS was my song!!!!!!!!

  • You're right cosmic. She's totally off her tits!!!

  • What a great song.. cant get enough of it. A classic song from the 80s

  • ive still got a video tape of the machinations doing this song and pressure sway at the "MCG" at the Mushroom concert of the year in1998. Great Memories.
