  • I think that we should deffinatly teach the bible in school.

I'd like the opportunity to bring mine to school and read from it.

(holds up a copy of the "Satanic Bible")

    ;)

  • Public School isn't about conscious thinking, it's about 'programming kids into adult work-horses' ... don't get me wrong; sometimes it's more-peaceful to be a dumb work-horse than to see the crash-course the work-horses are ragingly racing into, but you have to be apart from the work-horses in order to steer them to safety ... so yeah, the Bible should NOT be taught to the work-horses---not under the banner of "conscious reason"

  • @mythmanjay

If politicians wouldn't stop cutting funding to public education we wouldn't have issue of programming.

  • @NUTCASE71733 "more funding = LESS programming" I disagree; 'funding' is the nosh the good horsey gets at the end of the day. If the horsey gets MORE funding, it's convinced that what it was doing that day (programming students) was GOOD. What the politicians are doing is right! "Education" is NEVER "public"! That's "SCHOOLING" you're thinking of ... swimming-in-formation. 'Education' grows AT HOME, and the students then BRING IT to school!

  • @mythmanjay

Strawman argument. Jefferson himself said we'd benefit from a public education system AND WE HAVE. We have idiots like Bush, and creationists like the whole of the Texas School board wanting to fuck kids over. The fact you can't tell that point apart from your dishonest statement says a lot to most parents.

  • @NUTCASE71733 Okay, what I think I'm hearing you say is "Give these idiots (who are falsely using the public-ed. system) MORE money, and they will somehow see what they're doing wrong"? I don't think that'll worlk; you give them more money, they'll see whatever they're doing as 'the right thing.' But maybe you mean 'more & better equipment for the schools' when you say 'funding,' in which case I agree. NO MONEY, JUST TOOLS!

  • @mythmanjay Other countries spend far more of schools. and geuss what, they have far more intelligent people coming out of schools.

Spend more on quality teachers (aka dont pay so little that teachers can't buy a new car once in a while) so your not just left with the crap ones that can't get work elsewhere. Spend more making class sizes smaller, you can't be expected to teach more than 20 children at once.

Works in the rest of the world, and they are just charging past the US in education.

  • @neverfearchrisishere ARRRRRGH! Education IS NOT 'how to bury yourself in piles of tool and hope that there's something interesting built on top of you if you have enough tools'; education IS 'using the tools you have to build the most-useful products.' Maybe they DO do that in other countries, but MONEY IS ONLY A TOOL; maybe YOU would choose 'ten crappy screwdrivers' over 'one good screwdriver that lasts a hundred times longer'; but the latter will fasten ten times more bolts than the former.

  • @mythmanjay Well to continue your analogy. At the moment America is buying 3rd rate screwdrivers and wondering why they fall apart when you look at them. A complete waste of time and money.

The rate of pay of teachers is relevent to quality of the service. At the moment the pay is so low that only a useless nohoper would take the job

A good teacher can help make great people who do great things, a bad teacher is a complete waste of time. Low pay and oversized classes encourages the latter

  • @mythmanjay Or rather: At the moment America is buying 3rd rate screwdrivers and wondering why they fall apart when you look at them - and thinks the solution is to buy cheaper screw drivers.

  • Im for teaching these arguments AGAINST evolution, so that I can sit in the back of the class and debunk every single one of them, LOL.

  • I have a much better idea.

    Forget the bible as literature.

Use that time instead to teach the kids about the methodology and history of science.

Much more useful then even the most secular bible literature class.

  • Religion class for me was like:

Religion as a cultural phenomenon with all sorts of beliefs, norms, with an emphesis on western culture.

  • I guarentee if a muslim brought his rug to graduation and prayed during some part of it. Theyd be like holy fuck why do we allow prayer to be a part of this...

  • Scripture as an elective ONLY when all schools have plenty of money for their budgets and they have EVERY class they want and need. This is slightly unrelated, but sports funding should be severely cut in schools to make way for classes that will actually help you in the real world. Classes and funding always get cut while the teams keep getting new uniforms. I don't think it'll matter when I go in for a job interview if I was really good at 3's when I was on JV lol.

  • @longfootbuddy

Ok sure. Then education will only be affordable to the rich resulting in another dark age regardless of wiether or not we do away with religious fundamentalism in our lifetime. Do yourself a favor and get run over by a train.

  • @NUTCASE71733 well nutcase, theres no reason to think that only the rich could afford a good education.. you see, its not a large salary that causes teachers to teach well.. do you really think your error in logic justifies stealing from people? it doesnt.. and you telling me to be killed by a train tells me that not only do you lack reason, but youre sadistic, and indeed, a nutcase

  • @longfootbuddy

That's bullshit and you know it. that was not what I was meaning, asshat. Back in the dark ages only the rich, royals, and religious leaders were allowed to read. This allowed them to screw over the peasents left and right. What you suggest will put a cramp in the common man ultimately forcing them to not educate their kids. Even if they had home-school optins, therre thse who misuse thatsystm to instill religion down kids' throats like the founder of Conservapedia.

  • @NUTCASE71733 i understand youre in favor of forcing us all to pay for a public school system that decides what material to brainwash childrens minds with, but youre a nutcase.. you suggest i want to return people to the dark ages, and the tyranny of those ways of governing, but again, youre a nutcase, and i want no such thing.. i simply want to end the current tyranny and control of goverment, and be exluded from the theft and slavery you all call educational funding and goverment regulation

  • Scripture as an elective class in public schools, STILL imposes funding by my tax dollars.

    Constitution says: "NOPE."

  • I think they should tell students how the bible was put together. Christian parents would go apeshit....knowing that their kids are being taught that Chistianity is a man made construct. You want to teach the bible....fine...we teach how it was put together and we point out the good AND bad parts of the bible. (God killing children, god being the biggest abortionist in history....Jesus telling Xtians they can drink poison..etc.)

  • Nice one I heard the first time today:

    "Joseph, it's a girl!"

    :-)

  • ok how about this is we cant teach the bible in schools we cant teach any thing about how the earth was made

  • @aaronwingard Why would you say something that stupid? The Bible isn't proven, other ideas of the Earths formation are very well established and have massive amounts of evidence to prove that magic sky daddy didn't do it.

It is stupid to say, "Just because my idea isn't accepted by science, that means real science shouldn't be taught!" Fuck creationists, they are just a bunch of retards.

  • They had a mandatory prayer during my graduation ceremony, a PUBLIC high school for fuck sake! Even passed out bibles during my rehearsal. 0.0

  • @NerdySabbath Damn, I would have ripped it up in front of everyone and yelled what the fuck is this shit, SERIOUSLY!

  • I make a motion that we start teaching the Creation account in Tolkien's Silmarillion as the revealed truth of God in public schools.

  • anyone find the episode mat was talking about?

  • in my advanced senior english class we spent the first half of the year reading the bible, Oedipus, Beowulf, and roman and greek mythology. we looked at the links between them all. the second half was spent looking at the affects these works had on modern works.

  • I've never heard a prayer at a benediction. Sounds nuts to me. But then again I'm not American.

What is going on over there????? Have you all lost your minds???

  • @warren52nz Not all of us; just a lot of the older generations, and a good chunk of the southern half.

  • @UnderlordZ Yeah I know. Well I heard Atheism is growing faster than any religion in the States which is encouraging. I think the Internet has created a collective conciousness where people are free to air their doubts and common sense is taking over.

I also heard that Islam is the fastest growing religion which is more than a bit scary! Apparently they've immigrated to everywhere and are out-breeding the others by more than 4 to 1. Democracy may be our downfall, ironically.

  • "...vote to make everyone their bitch".. That totally made my day!

  • I want the American government to teach Al quran to all american children!-islam rule the world!

  • Gotta love Dillahunty International Studios aka Matt's couch.

  • My school had a prayer at graduation, by one of the honor students, it felt very awkward to me.

  • @Oreceo now check your e-mail dumb-ass see if you can argue with that info and try reading a book before you speak

  • @Oreceo dumbass Jesus was a real man. Lets teach that George Washington was a myth too. Try reading a book other than "were the wild thing are"

  • @Ltaxe1 Ummm.... I HAVE done some reading and discovered that none of the writings about Jesus were written by people that actually MET him. They weren't contemporaries. So ALL of the stuff about Jesus, including his actual EXISTENCE is HEARSAY!

On the other hand, many people who met George Washington wrote about him so their accounts were first hand and therefore credible.

I'd suggest YOU do some reading before spouting off in here!

  • Anyone know the earlier epsiode of TAE that Matt was referring to? love to look it up.

  • As I write this, 8 people have given this a "thums down"...

What if we flip the situation. What if Satanist were the vast majority of the local constituents? What if all the children wanted to sacrifice goats & chickens? What, I wonder, would those 8 think then?

    What's good for the goose...

    Peace.

  • Teaching the Bible as literature would actually help the atheist cause. They just learn all the nonsense in the Bible but religious interpretation isn't allowed! An awesome Trojan horse.

  • @ejpetruso ever hear of the illuminati what do our government worship and why would they want to keep religion out of schools if you let the bible be taught in school the whole country would convert

  • . . . but every freshman is already my bitch . . .

  • "make every freshman your bitch" - Got my vote

  • lol we had this when I was in High School... didn't know this was something new.

  • isnt it your right to worship as you want? wouldnt that mean that you have a right to pray at the graduation if you wish, and not pray if you wish?

  • @longfootbuddy You do not have the right to force others to listen to your prayers, and do not have a right to worship PUBLICLY on government property. There are limits to all rights.

  • well, you do have a right to pray in public but not as a state sanctioned graduation thingy etc.

As long as it's not being disruptive in any way, you can pretty much drop to your knees and start praying whenever. but what they're suggesting is a clear violation of church/state separation

  • @Keilia2007 so no freedom of religion or free speech in public...hmm

  • and thats not what that person said. They mentioned not to be done on government property there is a big difference to do so publicly and to be done by the government

  • @longfootbuddy as long as it doesn't violate the constitution.

  • @longfootbuddy Yes, good point. Although, praying often is madatory, I think that is the point.

  • "you have a right to pray at the graduation if you wish"

Of course. But not while standing at a podium in front of the entire graduating class of a Public School, while holding a microphone. That changes things...

I remember being pissed off at having to listen to our valedictorian pray over the mic, forcing everyone to listen to it. There were several other students that were angry as well. And this was almost 20 years ago.

  • what is this song?

  • Thank you for this inspirational comment.

Now I'll kneel down in front of my fridge begging for a cold beer. I need it.

  • He doesn't exist.

  • The day will soon come when the Theists will need us. Wait you already do. Next time you need medical help go to a church instead of the hospital. Pray instead of seeking treatment. I hope god saves you.

But don't spat in the face of us, the godless and then come begging us to save or your life. If it is part of gods plan you won't die right?

If not will god send you to hell if subvert his plan and get Atheist science to keep you alive longer than her planned.

  • Correction: Longer than he Had had Planned.

  • @VictorphoenixDMvault i will bet its the other way around first. but for now we have doctor. actual there are more Chirstian Dr than Atheistes other than dr. korvorkin and i dont want to see him

  • lol lame

  • So what are you doing using the technology provided to you via science? Why not follow your own book's teachings? Mark 10: 21 :Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me."

So, go sell all your worldly possessions and live following Jesus's teachings. Oh wait, that would probably lead to your death so you wont.

  • ummmm, the high school I went to had a freshman slave day. Where you had to carry a seniors books, bus their tray, clean their locker, etc.

  • public school mean a whole varities of religion and cultures that come together. however its unconstitutional that public schools promote or do anything religionous whether its be christianity, muslim, hebrew w/e no public school should do anything, no praying, no reading the bible, nothing of the sort. thats why theres catholic schools or religion private schools. no religion should ever interfere with public. thats just pisses me off that christianity epecially tries forcing their beliefs.

  • Religion should NEVER be allowed in schools. Unfortunatley as they said in the video the religious right is still finds tons of back doors to sneak in their propaganda. Even my mother who is a very devoted Catholic is against religion being taught in schools, because in this town the majority of the population is Southern Baptist and they have spread so much hate propaganda against Catholics and non-believers alike. The fundalmentalist are the main ones behind this. Religion is a cancer.

  • in high school here in sweden, we read from the bible via our religion books, (with different faiths), everybody was laughing and angry what the book said, also with islam and pascifistic buddhism and how hinduism divided people in different casts...

  • I doubt many schools will find teachers capable of teaching the Bible from a secular perspective. As much as I would have appreciated a class about the Bible from its historical (and plagiarized!) perspective when I was in high school, teaching subjects that carry such emotional weight is too difficult. Just leave holy books out of school curriculum, even for electives.

  • Graduation ceremonies are about community and the individual students and their growth. I think people of any beliefs should be able to express those beliefs at a school graduations. Secularism doesn't make sense when individuals are the focal points. My high school was pretty open to multiple cultures; the situation may be more complex nowadays or in different regions. When on individual bases, prayer shouldn't offend. I wouldn't have been offended.

  • You wouldn't have objected because more than likely the prayer would be to "your god." What about others in your school who worship another god. You don't know the religion of every student at your school and how dare you to assume! I find the whole thing offensive! Religion should be kept out of public schools period! You are the reason we have separation of church and state!

  • >the prayer would be to "your god."

I doubt that. I'm not religious.

    >You are the reason we have separation of church and state!

"Keeping religion out of public schools" is called indoctrination. Let the teachers teach from secular perspectives; let the students believe what the want. Secularism applies to what is _taught_, not what is believed.

My opinion is that graduation ceremonies regard the students, not the curricula. The students who take offence at others' beliefs are those at fault.

  • Yes but not all students share the same religion so you can't please them all. Just keep prayer out of it period! I am not religious either and do not like to sit thru other peoples prayers. They are silly and a waste of time!

  • Any course about the Bible needs to include information about how it plagiarized other ancient text and has been used to discriminate against various groups of people throughout history.

  • i dont see the point really, the bible is a religious book and christians believe in it. surely, any attempt to teach it from a neutral point of view will be seen as an insult as after all thats not how christians believe it is meant to be taught, and christians are the majority in america unfortunately...

  • What abot the gospels of the crab people or the Quaran?

  • The just passed this bill in Texas. you cannot favor one religion over another. Ther is NO place in public schools for religion!

  • Song? requesting song pl0x.

  • How can they make a Bible class proposing arguments against evolution? All Christian arguments are outdated and have been proven wrong many times.

  • well, they cant but will. the fact that they excuses an arguments are outdated isnt going to stop them. they still use them. and most people will probably be won over and believe the lies.

  • Very true and very frightening.

  • Why are they on a couch? Did they lose their old filming area?

  • They're renovating the studio.

  • TO ALL AMERICAN ATHEIST: Silent protest... all you paper currency.. use a sharpie and just cross out where it says GOD on all bills... (this is not defacing per US laws)

  • I still can't believe how much better the show is from Matt's house than in an actual studio. The sound is great. :-)

  • um Iam having a convo with some christian about the bible.

does anybody have some really good question I can ask some christian?

  • I have mixed feelings regarding readings from the Bible during a graduation ceremony. I regard the Bible as a work of fiction, and while a public school requiring a student to read from the Bible is unconstitutional, a student should not be prevented from voluntarily reading passages from ANY fictional book, including the Bible, during a graduation speech.

The same goes for voluntary prayer in school. I consider it to be completely ineffective, and thus harmless. A waste of time, but harmless.

  • I'm for teaching scripture in school, so long as it's not indoctrinating, and labeled as a "Mythology" class.

  • Right; or even "History," "Comparative Religion" or "Literature." But, you realize, the Chr*stian zombies would be howling and marching just as loudly and just as angrily, over "Satanic Heathen" religions being allowed to "pollute" good Chr*stian kids.

  • But it is mythology ya stupid fuck.

  • That's why it's called Mythology class fucking cunt.

  • We had one of those.

  • @rawwqq and you have to teach all the "holy books" hey its only fair right lol isnt thaat what there supposedly for

  • @rawwqq It's usually taught, in part, in collegiate World Lit classes.

  • @rawwqq Up here in Montana, the bible was used in my mythology class.

  • @rawwqq but then it'd be a college class because mythology only gets like 1 week or less of the school plan hahaha.

  • @rawwqq we are where I come from, it's called religion.

  • @rawwqq

Ah Ha! I see what you did there!

    I agree.

  • freshmen are already made into everyone's bitch...

  • I agree with teaching the Bible as an elective. I think that the class should certainly teach about the history of the stories in all the currently recognized "holy books" as compared to other ancient myths, and put into context of the times they were written in. Joseph Campbell's books would be a good text for this curriculum. Nothing strips an idea of its holiness like shining a bright light on it.

  • I agree with you 100%. Teach it right along with Zeus. There could be no point that hits more home than that. Especially if someone in the class gets outraged if you make fun of Zeus because they worship Zeus.

  • The "meaningless" part - well, the same could be said about going to church through the eyes of an atheist. No "life after death" to us? Sure, that's what we're saying too. Actually, you're saying we will burn in hell? We don't think there is one.

The point is, we can live happily without those things, because we understand that hey do not exist.

  • Irony!

  • pleeeeease get rid of those uncomfortable intros!!

  • no i like them, the intros are truly bizarre

  • And someone please tell me the name of this song!!!!!

  • I went to Stony Point High School in Round Rock and I heard they were pushing to instill a prayer time along with optional electives where bible history and literature would be taught.

  • i was close to quitting school early... but if they tried to cram religion down my throat nothing could have stopped me

  • Good job as always.

  • Fairytales, or superstition that is exploited from the simple human to scared to say ," get the f out of here" But I forgive the simple human for they no not what to beleive. Society programs them to either obey the Bibile and be led to the poor house by financial terroists of organized fraud hiding behind religeon as proof that you can trust them. OR Society programs you to do as they do , if your smart. That's all the Bible is designd to do. EVIL doer's use the most perfect WMD ever created.

  • Now that i am older and began to think for myself, well, I think i AM THINKING FOR MYSELF, BUT I ALSO, think we enlightend individuals are in tune to each other and we receive thoughts out of thin air. If I am in thought about a subject that someone also is thought provoking , that is with an open mind for all considerations of how and why does it really matter. but that's not to say I beleive I am correct in my thinking just satisfied with what makes the most sense to me. Bible= WMD

  • any one the name of the song?

  • I would really like to know this as well. Google search of the lyrics drew a blank.

    Anyone have any idea?

  • From 5:20 they start talking about a past episode. Anyone knows which episode it was?

  • It seems the Creationists are attempting to find every which way to shoehorn their ridicuous beliefs into the education system as an alternative to genuine peer reviwed science. Well let's see how they like a taste of their own medicine. I propose that Islam recieves exactly the same amount of air time as Bible studies and that lectures should be interrupted 5 times (is it 5?) a day for bowing to Mecca.

  • What's that song on the background?

  • Why is the show in some dude's living room? What happened to the studio?

  • They're doing renovations to the studio over the summer. This is just temporary.

  • Ted Haggard is a heterosexual

    Ted Haggard is a heterosexual

    Ted Haggard is a heterosexual

    Ted Haggard is a heterosexual

  • Ted Haggard is gay. That's why he had an affair with a male prostitute for years.

  • Ted Haggard believes in education: reading, writing, arith"meth"tic

  • Schools need a class that teaches unbiased facts on religion as a whole. Nothing would create more atheists than that.

  • No. Religions should be kept out of school completely because teachers are not obligated to be NOT biased. Everyone has a bias when it comes to religion or science. Religion, like sex, should left up to the parents to teach their kids. I do agree with Matt. The Bible is an interest read as literature though. Gotta everything from fantasy to horror to realism.

  • Religion is much different than sex. Religion should be discussed in an unbiased manner in schools as it's a major part of our history. There is a major difference between discussing it, and preaching. Teachers should only be restricted from preaching. I remember in high school our history class skipped so many events in history due to the strong religious influence. 90% of my knowledge of history came from personal research.

  • Religion is different but both are touchy subjects that need to be address. Sex, to prepare kids with an understanding of it, especially using protection. Religion, it is impossible for anyone to discuss it without biasness. And do you mean religion or Christianity? What about Paganism, you really think Christian people who are teachers will THAT without biasness? The problem is that people will include their own personal beliefs in it. thus perverting the main issue.

  • Of course they will. And no, I meant all religions. Old, new, and currently dying.

  • We have Religion as normal class in Swedish school. From 7th grade, maybe earlier. I think it would be healthy if US schools brought Religion to the children. Not only Christianity.

  • In my school we learn about different religions in Social Studies class in 9th grade. That's only in the beginning of the year though, and we learn it more from a historical point of view.

  • Pop's wrong, this song's great, I just don't know the name. Could someone enlighten me? :)

  • I had to ask Matt on face book and he sent me this response.

"The song is 'The Galaxy's Elegant Cinema' by Bryan Steeksma. He's a fan of the show who sent me a few clips of his music (so we won't have to worry about copyright). He's got a MySpace page (I think he's listed as Freeksma) for himself and for his band (The Heck)."

  • Thank you sir! Funny enough, the rest of the song isn't as good, hah! :)

  • Boy, your intro music is lame. Great job otherwise.

  • That crap is something that belongs in a student group, or club, NOT as part of a public school curriculum.

  • Due to separation of church and state, religiously affiliated groups don't belong in public schools at all. They can take it off campus.

  • Yes, they can if they are not funded or supported by the school (tax payers).

Not allowing students to gather violates another Constitutional right.

  • Schools can and do prohibit students from gathering all the time. As a school, they are allowed certain latitude. Children can be searched without a warrant, denied them their right to free speech and so on. Schools have prohibited clubs for gays, anarchists and other non-religious groups, so they can certainly prohibit religious clubs.

  • All that stuff probably happens, but I dont agree that it's Constitutional.

  • what is the name of the intro song?

  • Every high school graduation ceremony I've been to has had a Bible quote or two in it. If I ever had to make a speech at a graduation, I'd add unpleasant verses of when Yahweh killed off these people, when he commanded someone to do so, or when he endorsed slavery, murder, and rape. Ya know, just to shake things up a bit.

  • im against bible as a literature.

it wont be done fully, they will pick 'good' parts. or it will all depend on the teacher, teachers bias (both sides) will turn it into religion debate, not history/literature.

and since its a translation, it has no historical value in terms of literatures history.

  • The Bible is such are part of English vernacular that you almost have to teach it as literature.

However, they pick through Chaucer and Shakespeare, so why not view the Bible as literature and pick through it?

  • some stories should be teached in literature, along with some greek/roman myths, i agree.

only becouse you need to know them to understand later books. stories of hercules, achilles, hobb etc. but not too much of bible is realy readable. it is very badly written when you do treat is as a literature.

  • Two things........

1)You need to go back to school. It is TAUGHT, not TEACHED.

2)The Bible is as EASILY READ (not READABLE) as anything else from that time period and is actually quite well written considering it is a translation.

The Bible should be reduced to one of the great works instead of held in such high esteem and reverence.

  • 1) deal with it, i am not american, i do mistakes in english.

    2) no it isnt. its bad written book. it got pages full of numbers... its written by someone who considered including numbers above 100 will make him look smart...

its much worse than illiad/oddysey or greek myths, in most of it its just babbling, and saying is a great work of literature offends literature.

its translated many times, and each version differs in style. altho doubd any is easy to read.

  • You can't comment on what good or bad English writing is because you don't speak English as a first langage. And you've obviously NOT READ the Bible if you think there are pages full of numbers. This is simply not true.

The Bible is a compilation of books written at different times by many different authors. Tyndale wasn't "writing" and English Bible. He was translating.

Therefore, the book which you claim to be badly written, isn't. It's actually pretty good considering the source.

  • i can comment on it, i did read more books in english than average american, including some harder material. it does not take a english expert, to see what a good literature is not.

and yes i did read old testament. and its only interesting becouse its 'holy book', its by no means interesting story/stories.

im not saying translations are bad, sources are bad. im saying you cant work on one translation unless you study the transltion itself, not the book.

  • Oh, so now you're back-tracking and side-stepping.

BTW, what chapters and verses EXACTLY are the pages full of numbers.

Also, have you studied the Bible in its original languages?

I never said it was good literature. I said it should be REDUCED to merely a great work instead of being held in reverence. A large part of the English vernacular is taken from the Bible.

You're over your head with this particular line of debate. I have a BA in English and another in Linguistics.

  • Then you should know that the vernacular of which you speak did not come from the Bible. Look through any dictionary and the words come from Latin and Greek. The only reverence it deserves is how it has impacted human history (mostly in bad ways).

  • I never said the Bible should be regarded with reverence. Quite the opposite, in fact.

And the actual impact English has had on human history is enormous.....mostly bad, but some good has come of it.

Even an outdated book of dogma has some wisdom in it.

  • Nothing that non-dogmatic texts don't also have.

And what is this crack about the English language having a bad impact on the world?

  • no im not.

you said its great piece of literature, i said its poorly written if you look at it as a literature. what you mean by saying 'its great work' if not 'good literature'?

as for pages with numbers, i dont want to look it up, but in genesis two pages are basicaly listing who lived how long, and his son, and his son, and his son... with basicaly repeating everyones age when he married, how much he lived after that, and how much it adds up at death... adding numbers for the win.

  • Genesis does have a geneology. There are no ages mentioned however and the geneology is important in establishing the line of the family of Christ.

Really.....time for you to quit. You don't know what you're talking about and it's blatantly obvious.

BTW, Chaucer was rather shoddily written, but he tells some good tales. Some portions of the Bible are absolutely beautiful....ever read the Song of Solomon? It deserves a place among great works for its impact on the language.

  • did you read the genesis even? no ages mentioned?? ok, lets see: 3 When Adam was 130 years old, he became the father of a son who was just like him—in his very image. He named his son Seth. 4 After the birth of Seth, Adam lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

thats very badly written... it says he died at 930 after living 800+130years. thanks for counting. no numbers, watch next:

  • When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of[b] Enosh. 7 After the birth of[c] Enosh, Seth lived another 807 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 8 Seth lived 912 years, and then he died. 9 When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After the birth of Kenan, Enosh lived another 815 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 11 Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died.

  • When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 After the birth of Mahalalel, Kenan lived another 840 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 14 Kenan lived 910 years, and then he died. 15 When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared. 16 After the birth of Jared, Mahalalel lived another 830 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 17 Mahalalel lived 895 years, and then he died.

  • This is not what you originally stated nor what you referred to. You said "pages of numbers" and you were referring to the geneology.

Sure the Bible mentions ages, but there are not pages of numbers.

You don't know what you are talking about and are now attempting to backfill to make yourself seem knowledgeable.

  • seems i cant plase you. you just stated genealogy doesnt include numbers. i linked you half of it, with each age typed two times doing the adding for the stupid reader.

and you now saying there is no more numbers... forget it. there are no pointless pages in the bible...

  • Ciao, he said "Pages full of numbers" not "Pages with nothing but numbers".

You're bitching at him on a technicality, while disregarding his actual point. The bible is a poorly written document. That doesn't mean it's unimportant. Even if we get a lot of our vernacular from it, that doesn't make it a literary milestone.

My group of friends gets a lot of lines from Big Trouble in Little China, that doesn't mean it was a literary treasure, or even worthy of an academy award.

  • No, it IS poorly written. It is preachy and no literary scholar will condone preaching in "good" writing. There is a huge amount of telling instead of creating a scene that shows the reader what the author is trying to get across. And there is hardly any description whatsoever.

  • Once again for those who refuse to understand.

The Bible is not great literature. However, I feel it should be taught as one of the great works because it has had such an influence upon English as a language. I don't think the whole thing should be taught. No school teaches all of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Homer, etc. They choose selected plays, portions or passages to teach. This is how the Bible should be presented.

  • It should only be presented as "look how poorly written this story is." And then, the class can re-write the story to make it better.

And there you go again saying it had an impact on the English language. I guess you could say that as even non-believers say, "Jesus Christ" when they crap themselves. However, your argument still holds no water. If Greek myths are taught in lit. classes, then there is no reason to teach the Bible.

  • if you arguing of bible/christianity influence in HISTORY, then we would all agree. however in literature, its influence is very small. influence religion had on culture/art is big, but id say its very small in literature. dont recall any hobb/sodom/genesis having influencing much. becouse the stories are poor and sick.

not denying religion influence, just the scripture itself.

how could bible influence english language if its translations, not even latin version.

  • Obviously you're either not well-acquainted with English or you don't know the Bible if you think that the Bible and its writing, not the religion itself, has not had a HUGE effect on the language.

English is riddled with references to scripture......good Samaritan, get your ox out of the ditch, daughter of Eve.....I could go on for hours.

  • I'd be scared if I walked into a History lesson and I was faced with arguments against evolution.

I don't think you'll be able to have a legitimate religious history class in the USA for a long time.

  • I don't think that any religion should be in an elective. If a student really wants to learn the Bible, they can learn it on their own time. In schools, if you don't get the elective you want there is a chance you will get another elective instead. If there was a Bible class then there would be a chance that you would be unfairly forced into Bible classes.
