I bet the people were angry at him for cutting it short, esp. without knowing that he'd been overworked & happened to be the worlds (I believe) over booked musician at that time.

No - Jimi said he felt ill and would come back and play another concert for free some other time - he also refused to be paid for the concert. People also got their money back so no trouble.
I think this is when his manager gave him purple haze to try to get him back with his orginal band and to get rid the band of gypsies I saw this in a documenrty.

I was there. A very sad experience - like being on concert with a wanna be.
Hendrix went back-stage several times, obviously he was very sick, why?? I don't know and I don't want to know.
He promised to come back later the same year for a free concert - it never hapens he died short time after.
