  • I left the pushrods in and with pressure against them, mainly to help push the head up once unbolted. And, yes, it does help on adjusting the rocker arms, but not from having the pushrods inplace when putting the head on, but rather by torquing the head down, then backimg off one rocker bolt at a time, exactly 3 to 6 complete revolutions, depending on whether its lifter is up or down, installing 1 p rod at a time, then turning the rockr nut the same # of revolutions u backed it off.

  • why did u leave the push rods in it? ... the only thing i can figure is so u wont have to re adjust the rocker arms when u put it back together ... but thats going to be agrivating trying to keep all the push rods lined up when u put the head back on it .......

  • NO FENDER COVER because this car will be repainted soon. The paint job on this impala videos better than it is in real. It should be the darker candy orange color that only shows in the door jambs, but has faded to gold on the exposed surfaces. And the clear has dulled on the top surfaces.

  • GREETINGS FROM PA. best wishes and hope u start fixing up your brothers 55 chevy conv. in the not too distant future.

  • Live from Texas.. another great video!

  • so from the looks of the blown head gasket the heads were not skimmed on the last rebuild? U had the same problem on my 1977 Triumph 2500tc, only it was going past 4 cyliders so only 1 and 6 were getting compression!

  • orh man it sux big time considering it has already been rebuilt once or maybe twice

  • Well Dan, the good news is that you'll also be fixing all the oil leaks on the top part of the engine at the same time. Should be able to clean it up really nice and it would actually stay that way for a bit!

  • Hahaha.. I just did a head job on a Honda and was so surprised to find how easy it was to get the heads off.. Good to see you huffin' and puffin' like you didn't have quite enough lead in your bucket to get that head up over the fender. That's the way I remember it was to work on a real American motor.. Glad you found the problem. You'll have it fixed in no time... Beautiful engine! I'd take it any day.

  • dan what kind of carb was on the 327?

  • ive been around alot of chevys and id have to think that was from rebuilder error, or a junk warped head

  • Damn , put a fender cover on that thing.

  • @harleysuxass I like how he just droped the head on the ground too! lol

  • Yeah any time I see two adjacent cylinders having problems I think head gasket.

To Dan's credit blowing a headgasket between cylinders is pretty rare, but this is the second SBC I've seen it happen on. Glad we could be of help.

  • Sounds like you got 'er under control! Good job! I had a similar problem on my Plymouth. I changed it last weekend, and it's running like a champ.

  • good call.

  • find any treasure in the engine valley?

  • haha, compression sloshing back and forth between cilinders!

I have seen this more then once on 4bangers and inline 6 engines.

  • Don't forget to skim the head.

  • I think I got a hernia from watching you yank that head out. Good thing you didn't bend any of those push rods.

  • Hopefully the block is okay. My cousin had a 69 ford truck with a 390. Head gasket blew and he kept driving it. When we tore it down it had cut a deep groove in the block between the 2 cylinders. Ruined the block.

  • i love a good simple fix thats cool keep the chevy going nice!!!

  • After seeing this video I have the same suspecion that my Moskvich 408 might suffer under the same "blowen head gasket" problem.

  • You really should have removed those pushrods before lifting the head...

My back hurts just watching you lift that head like that...OUCH!

Are you OK? Sounds like you been working way too hard, huff, puff, gasp, weeze.

Ha, ha, ha. Keep them videos coming.

  • Yup that's a blown head gasket all right

  • Thought so! now get her purrin!
