i guess this is a huey lewis song and phil is apparently aping lewis' vocal mannerisms while singing it. lynott imitating lewis. not the best work of the irish singer/songwriter. he could have written his own song expressing the same sentiments and could have sung it in a more personal, "authentic" style. (i guess lewis was "hot" back then, and lynott thought he was being "hip" by recording "still alive.")
Great song-from demos Phil did with Huey Lewis & News (how can you not hear them on this track?) in SF in early 1985. I believe Lawrence Archer went with him and played guitar on these tracks.
Great hooks, great feel, great Pop sensibilities. Huey played on several Lizzy albums-he's a killer harmonica player. Thin Lizzy were the greatest band ever and any true fan slamming this song is a steaming pile of pelican poop.
These songs were done to help Phil get a record deal-drugs stopped that.
So sad and haunting that this is one of the last songs phil recorded before he died. By the time anybody heard this...he was no longer alive. Strange way of him telling us he's still alive, through his music!
Maybe it's not Lizzy-esque rock and roll, but it is good, solid, well-crafted pop music, though not one of my favourite of his songs. Can't Get Away is also an excellent pop song, but with more of an edge. Thank you for posting these songs. RIP Phil. It's hard to believe it's been 25 years.
Wow first song i didn't like from phil lynott and i love it all i think he's one of those ultra rare artists/bands that never made a bad album/song (i'm not a mega fan btw). Sounds like it came from a huey lewis album..
Long live the Irish Emerald of rock. It should have been a hit (but it needs to be remixed). It sounds very much a song that Huey Lewis could have done.
on reading the Phil Lynot biography Geldof said he had never considered Thin Lizzy or just Phil for Live Aid apperently he just never thought of it even though he was quoted saying that there was a lack of black performers! I love Thin Lizzy and im sure that they would of reunited for a Live Aid concert but i guess we'll never know. Support Phil Lynot and fuck Bob Geldof.
it's quite possible that geldof never DID consider phil (or lizzy) for live aid. the feeling at the time was that the concert was only for "current" performers, not those whose glory days had been in the past. in fact, geldof was even criticized for having the boomtown rats at live aid, due to the fact that the band had already passed its peak.
@jonbecker03 Reading between the lines in 'The Rocker', I reckon there were two reasons: First that Geldof (and Midge Ure, let's not forget, who was a very close friend of Phil's) thought he was a bit too far gone to rely on for the gig. Hard to think that, but quite possible. Plus, Phil's relationship with Geldof had been strange: they may have been friends, but there was a competitive edge, and Geldof (in the back of his mind) may have reckoned he owed Phil a bad turn.
@jonbecker03 Geldof defended it by saying Lizzy had never been globally big enough to get on the bill. But let's be honest, there was some crap on there. Adam Ant? Been and gone by 1982. Sade? One hit wonder, and in UK only. Nik Kershaw? Howard Jones? There was room for a Lynott/Gorham/Moore/Downey Lizzy. And Moore was at the height of his solo career. He could have extracted "Out In The Fields" as the price of doing the Lizzy gig.
I think he could have included them, they were all still around then and had publically spoken of reforming before live aid. If they were invited to play, the band members have said they would have accepted.
Pink Floyd all played together for the first time in years at live8 a couple of years ago.
from what i gather, phil was actually HANGING with huey at the time. huey may have been in the studio at the time this thing was recorded and may have even had a hand in writing it.
to give the devil his due (deldof the devil, ha ha........), phil was pretty sick and f****d up at the time. sure, phil and the "boys" could have taken the stage, but what kind of performance would lynott have given? he might have COLLAPSED right in the middle of live aid.
Well its live aid and he would have had help geldoff is a pure cunt and did'n't want to be shown up? A true cunt geldoff years after this he still is wash your hair feral piece of shit hate you Your children finally have a life as they've grown up and michaels daughter may have a chance too fuck you off and come too Australia where she belongs
Definitely the most ironic title in the history of rock n roll. Except for maybe 'Down in a Hole' by Alice in Chains..... Actually, that whole cd became prophetic!
man, you put awesome videos up! its awesome too see that youre young and from the U.S. Its so weird seeing how much everyone still follows them and shit in Europe, but here, nothing. But yeah whatever, youre putting up awesome videos of super rare songs, which is awesome, thanks man. Oh and you put up the greedies which is awesome! do you have 7"?
I have the A-Side, but not the B-Side. I also have the two recorded live bootlegs that they did as a group. I've posted some from the first show, but nothing from the second. The second disk runs fast, so I'll have to fix the songs if I decide to post any. Both of them sound like they were recorded inside of a toilet, but they are historical and interesting to listen to.
No offense, but being a true fan doesn't mean you have to like everything he ever made. Personally, I think the most "true" fans are the ones that can objectively look at his body of work and find the redeeming value in it; or if there is none, explain why without acting like a jerk. I don't like every song Phil Lynott made, and I personally don't even care for this one...and I think that people that know me, wouldn't dare say I'm not a "true" fan. What does being a "true" fan mean anyway??
Well said. There's not many Lizzy songs I don't like as they're my fave band. I don't even own Chinatown or Thunder & Lightning though as I don't like that period much. I find people who love a particular band and love every single song to be a pain in the arse. I'm confused as to how someone could like this song but then also love Emerald or Massacre for example?
Thanks for posting this anyway. I've always wanted to hear these sessions. I'll honestly say though that I think this is crap.
Interesting responses - I LOVE this song, have never heard it before and as it happens never liked Emerald (!!) or Massacre...it might say something if I tell you my favourite albums are Nightlife, Vagabonds, Johnny & jailbreak...(in that order possibly!). If you type in Tim Bragg and Have You Seen Her? you can hear my Lizzy inspired stuff...cheers
agree totally, i love lynott and lizzy but can look at their songs without bias and realise that some are better than others whilst some will be far, far, far weaker than some of the better stuff, like this for example. This isnt a bad song... but you can say that its not great and still be a 'true' fan
i think its classic Phil with modern production. the twin guitar harmonies are there, "the boys are back" 3/4 shuffle is there, the only major difference is the huewy lewis production and back up vocals. His involvment is not surprising since huewy played harmonica for Lizzy on the 78 tour and he and Phil were pals.Gawd its too fuckin sad, I'm gonna put Renegade on ,and have a glass of wine .cheers to you Phil.
To be honest, it's a really awful song. I'm a massive Lizzy/Phil fan, but this really does sound like a Huey Lewis & The News song with Phil singing over the top. I wish Phil was still here, but if he put this crap out he never would have lived it down.
Shoot me down, but if anyone out there seriously thinks this is better or as good as his other pop songs ie Old Town, Romeo & The Lonely Girl, Dancin In The Moonlight etc, then your taste is up your arse.
This is a criminally cool song. If the rest of the material from his 3rd solo disc had been as good as the samples you've posted, it could have been HUGE. But then, Lizzy really SHOULD have been a huge hit on this side of the Atlantic, and they never were.
Thanks again for posting another previously buried treasure.
huey lewis just released this as a single, not phil singing but its good to hear his work still alive for 2011

Just a small point of accuracy: If he recorded this song in Jan '85, it was a year before his death, not two months.
He died in Jan '86.

extraordinary song
- typical lynott vibe to it but there's a distinctive Huey Lewis thing happening there too. Its good.
And by the way - I always thought Geldof was an asshole for excluding him and Lizzy from Live aid.
