I also know the joke is "1982 isn't that old really, there are already plenty of modern conveniences there" but if you htink about it: you'd have no internet, no mobile phones- probably no TV either if your area has already gone digital. And computers which were a lot more basic and not so useful by modern standards.
being from shrewsbury i love the shrewsbury bashing in fists of fun (pie pie anyone?) why can't more comedians lump shrewbury in with the ginger/welsh school of punchlines? :) notoriety!

The joke is probably on the programme makers in a way, though, as some of the actual Amish do use phones in a very limited sense.
