I admire those of you that are keeping your culture alive. 'Auwe...'auwe...'auwe! Her voice sounds like Rap Replinger's "Auntie Marialani". Not too sweet, not too rancid, BUT jus right hah? I'm going to halau today and apologize to my haumana that I have not been teaching them correctly....NOT!
Ugh... there are differences in the styles of Tahitian vs. Hawaiians just getting the basics down is what this is and is there really PERFECT way to hula ... NO because we are not perfect and arguing about it makes our culture look like idiots. HULA it is and has always been a way to convey to people a story in Hawaii ... that's our culture its not about the STEPS necessarily....There are also two main positions of a hula dance - either sitting (noho dance) or standing (luna dance).
This is Why I believe People who don't Know what they are doing should never be teaching hula its Like Teaching the English language and you see this (&^%(*&(&$%#&^&(*&^^, this Woman does not know what she is doing . its very sad to see. Maybe she'll find a REAL Kumu Hula to teach her.
I have been dancing the hula for over twenty years and tahitian isn't the same as the Hawaiian hula! Please don't confuse people with your lack of knowledge of my culture!
first of all during a kaholo your hands are not swaying..its discipline because its kahiko... why did you make this video if you have no idea what yoour talking about?? tahitian hula,,wow thats completely wrong!!
its okay.. and i think that woman want only share her experience about the exotic dance with people, they don't have any idea about hula, kauai and similar dances. I love that, this woman helps others to have interesst in tahitian dance. @ all haterz, why you don't make a video with the right moves etc., don't complain't anytime..
It is obvious this girl enjoys hula, but she should not be trying to teach other with the video. She is making many mistakes which other commentors have already noted. But keep dancing girl. Hula is wonderful.
Well at least it was half a kaholo, you continue by bringing your trailing foot to where your first foot stepped out and do it again, L,R,L,R to the left, then R,L,R,L to the right, that is the kaholo. What she doesn't mention is that you need to bend at your knees, so that while moving you aren't bouncing up and down, head pretty much stays at the same level.Google Hula Halau o Kamuela, one of the top hula halau in Hawaii, and watch their 2002 through 2010 videos, now that's hula.
You know ladies, we hawn's take our hula dancing very seriously!! Don't shame your family by doing something that will disgrace them. This is too shameful, because people will judge us by what they see & hear. Many many of us do not dance like this or wear so many different kalakoa stuff on. I don't know much about hula or other Polynesian dances, other than that I enjoy watching them performed well. What I can say about this video is that there is a big block of text obscuring the subject ... I can only see the top of her head. And the sound quality is so bad, I can only make out a word here and there.

@islegirl I always laugh when I hear someone say they learned the Hula Dance in Hawai'i. So they learned the Dance Dance, lol. If they only knew that Hula does mean Dance.
I found a better one that reminds me of my kumo of the way she taught me. okay..........i think i need to send this to my kumu........to see how yal teaching hula......lol!! i'm not hawaiian, but i'm a samoan........and i raised up in hawaii learning hula from school and practiced it for MAY Day........i don't know about learning how to hula from this video.......lmbo! lol!!
BTW, since you islanders have loads of experience in hula as professionals or in training, why don't you teach us some moves by using a digital camera or camcorder, show us how it's done step by step and post it on youtube? That's simple enough. And quit being negatively critical on other instructors, it's not helping anybody who wants to learn hula.
What Brie is showing are the basic moves and steps for beginners, something that you usually see or know. It may not be Tahitian, but it's still hula. You don't have to be born Hawaiian, Polynesian or Tahitian to teach hula. It takes lots of years of training and experience to teach this dance. At least Brie has the guts to show us a little tidbit of it for free, something that you don't bother doing, you just being small minded and stingy.
@charmaliqueNYC no offense but...This is NOT hula..no way even NEAR the basic Steps..but i do give her props for trying and your right about it not being easy..maybe just for the ones who actually have been doing it since they were little..i have.
@charmaliqueNYC what she has shown me is not the same way as real hawaiian dancers dance. she has done some of the basic hawaiian movement wrong. like uwehe, kaholo and ect. but i do give her the credit for making this video, but i dont recommened following it or learning from it in any way.
I've seen a lot of complaints on hula instructional videos on Youtube from people who are experienced hula dancers and island natives or descendents. Reality check time: America is still under financial ressession, therefore people cannot afford to go to the islands and learn these dances moves, we can't even afford private group or one on one lessons either, so we have to rely on the next best thing, even though its nothing like the island dancers.
You're moving twice to once side and a tap and the same the other way in Kaholo and your arms are in the opposite direction. How long have you been teaching?
Your moves, explanation and understanding of the hula is lacking knowledge. As for the audience, please DO NOT attempt to learn from this video...DOING SO COULD BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR REPUTATION AND/OR SAFETY. She really needs to join a halau and start as a STUDENT, gain experience and knowledge of the hula.
as a polynesian that was born in Hawaii and that has also been dancing since the age of 5 i advise every future watcher of this clip that everything she is saying is important, really isnt important at all.. so please dont listen to what this lady is saying.. she isnt even wearing the proper hula skirt.. this is not the actual hula. if yu want to learn go to an actual halau and learn please. noe offence to this lady though!!!!!
Yes u should teach it the correct way. I know u don't have to be Hawaiian or Polynesian to dance the hula but please teach it right and say it right. I am a Hawaiian and know the proper way to say Hawaiian words. The way u say it brings different meanings. Don't mislead people.
For people not being from the Polynesia, Micronesia etc it is not important, was not importent and will probably never be important who came up with the idea of hula. Since the time these islands were discovered all dances from all these places have been called hula. It is impudent to claim to know the hole origin of it all. You can assume that hula differs from island to island and each move has its own name which also differs from island to island. So I ask you... who are you to question her?
I'm neither Hawaiian nor Tahitian, but can see how people would be getting upset by someone banking off of the incorrect teachings of their culture (you can tell by the ad before the video) and the fact that this was viewed more than 113K times. Misrepresentation. This video should be taken down out of respect for Hawaiins & Tahitians, and NO, they're NOT THE SAME so even the title is wrong. My kids have been dancing for years and even I know wut a Kaholo is .... and this is not it.
dude, i hate how everyone is hating on this. seriously! maybe theyre doing it wrong but i dont see you putting up these videos. not to be rude, but you guys are being obnoxious. you dont OWN the dance, and you should be more respectful. no one is forcing you to watch this, so if youre going to be rude, you shouldn't say anything.
as a polynesian myself. If your'e gonna post something be sure to take the comments. It's not a matter of being rude, it's a matter of correcting & making sure it is done right. My ancestors are of Hawn heritage. What do I tell them? They lived & breathed the hula before the haole landed. Just learn your culture before posting.
i agree, not to be rude or anything but if you dont have more than 3 PLUS years in dancing you have no damn right in teaching hula. YOU NEVER START ON THE LEFT. you people from tha' mainland have no clue. not t be rude or anything.
HEY, Not everyone from the mainland doesn't have a clue. i've been dancing hula for 8 years now, & i think i've got a clue on what i'm doing... but seriuosly tho, that girl just needs to stop teaching. wtf, it's not even close to a kaholo! & she says it wrong too, as in koholo. stupid grl.
OMG, where did you learn to dance hula. Everyone who dances know that you always start on the right. The hips is NOT an emphasis thing in Hula. Your steps should be closer together. All fingers move together. Perhaps you should watch Merri Monarch Video's. You should teach the foot movements first by counting to the right 1 2 3 together. Place hands on the hips in a kahiko stand. What is that thing on your right leg? Loose it. When teaching hula, it is better to wear a Pa'u skirt. Hawn is Hawn,
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

hate to break it to you but tahitian and hula are two different dance types/styles. there are some similarities but common if you are supposed to be teaching this you should know the difference.
Wow, your a bunch of haters. Even if this woman isn't familiar with the exact movements she's very personable and trying to teach something*, freaking prejudice you bunch are. I too prefer to be taught by the original source myself but anyone who is willing to teach something that isn't ignorance has already 1-uped you folks. Thanks for the upload Brie don't let these haters get you down..
I don't mean to nitpick at this video, and I'm not trying to be mean or sound like a know it all(which I am not) but this woman is no expert at the hula. No one can really learn from this video, like for example, keeping your feet together is a no-no at all times when dancing and the kaholo involves swaying twice, not once. Also when you move your arms, the folded arm is not suppose to go past the center line between your breast.
@maddywoo She's Tahitian; I've met her. She may dance hula slightly differently than what you know (which is different from what I know), but don't knock her. They do teach hula slightly differently around the world and other Polynesians (I'm Hawaiian myself, so poly's other than Hawaiian) tend to have their own interpretation of hula. You'll notice some dance with Cook Island hands, which I definitely do not use but I recognize that this exists.
If anything, Brie is definitely a Tahitian expert. She'll definitely school anyone in Tahitian, and yes! she does know her hula though different. (I certainly don't bend my arm and wrist as much as she does...I was taught to have my body be geometric with the ground, and that my arms must be parallel to the ground with only a slight bend.)
@maddywoo you're right this is ALL wrong. pretty much. for on you're not supposed to bend your wrist like that hula dancers are supposed to be graceful and elegant, she looked really stiff and the Kaholo includes both of your feet moving not just one. She right there is kinda sterotyping to me and thinks shes getting it right. I would know my hula teacher grew up in Hawaii and has been doing hula literally all her life.
I think that you shouldn't be teaching something that you do not know. You are a disgrace to all Polynesian dance. You definitely should not be posting any more videos...go back and get your movements right before you try to teach.
The previous comment was deleted because one of my kids posted a less than complimentary response and I sincerely apologize for that.
" 'A'ohe pau ka 'ike i ka halau ho'okahi" is a Hawaiian proverb that proclaims, "All knowledge is not taught in one (hula) school." Hula is a language of the heart so let us not be too critical, but with a loving spirit or in the "spirit of aloha", learn to appreciate the gifts that each dancer of hula possesses.
I don't care about all those stupid negative comments of people that has nothing better to do, at least this lady is doing something constructive, I like it, and I find them helpful for me, go get a life suckers. PS, no, I don't know this lady!!!
The Fact that she is calling it " the Hula Dance " tells me this person has NO idea what she is doing or talking about. I would ask that sh get Proper traing before trying to seel herself as a KUMU " Instructor" Of Hula and for God sake .. Leard The language so that she can Pronouced words Correctly.
actually u shod b teachin them 2 bend 1st nd not the way they move their hands cuz they only tell a story with their hands and grace...the story with the hips is tahitian...nd u shod probly get ur facts str8 b4 u post it nd save urself sum embarrasment
I think this wahine in the video is trying to demonstrate a kaholo "auana" style but the feet and the hands are incorrect (sorry). In auana style- you must be dancing on your toes, and the top part of your body never moves. Don't force your hips to move. It's the steps using the heel toe heel toe effect that is making the hips move. Don't force it.
The kaholo is a Hawaiian basic hula step- consisting of 3 consecutive steps to the right and left followed by a sway, bringing foot in at fourth count. The hands--> there are 5 placement of angles, and you can kaholo with whatever placement of the hand. It doesn't have to be what is shown on the video which is first position and second position. The hand when it's at first position should be at your boob level. ;o)
The second form of hula is simply called "hula" (the public form) and can be danced by both men and women, outside the heiau, and is designed for the maka'ainana or the commoners. This hula is called the public form.
The video, is wrong. Kalamai (I'm sorry) to say, but there is no such thing as a Tahitian hula. Tahitian dances are dances from Tahiti- although there are about 4 types, the bombastic hip movement (ote'a) aparima (kiss of the hands) is soft like the Hawai'ian hula, etc...
Second, I do have to let you know the difference- Hula is a dance the island of Hawai'i. There are 2 forms of hula- the ha'a which is also called a Hula Kapu, it's sacred, done only by men, it needed religious significance, danced only by men under a strict direction of a kahuna after a long a rigorous audition- and these dances are designed for the ali'i or of noble blood. This is called the temple form of hula- it's only danced in a heiau (temple).
First I'd like to praise this lady for at 'least' trying to learn our culture and the dance. It's not all about how good of a dancer you are but really what is in your heart.
I just saw this video and started reading everyone's comments. I can't really hear much of her speaking (something is probably wrong with my speakers).
ok so lady are you even hawaiian i dance for one of the most respected kumu in the state if not the world and he would so put you in your place if he saw you trying foa be hawaiian and trying to teach a kaholo.
cant everyone just say, "well the video was interesting but not the same as the real thing". i mean give her a break because at least shes interesting in learning the dance. maybe she should learn the culture as well. It would be like me telling you that you trying to do a native american dance is wrong because of the color of your skin. I respect your types of dances and would be thrilled if someone wanted to learn one of mine. cant we all just get along? lets not all be racist plz. :)
i've been doing hula, tahitian, samoan, and maori dances for many years now.. yes they are all very different but just let me say i dont get your videos.
i watched the whole things and didnt see a single haholo...
stupid white boy fuck you asshole on u r fucking island u r worse den every other race on this eath who sucks cock n like bein ass fucked. dumbass white pieca shit...go bone ya mom n gif birth to a daughter who is ya sis u ass...
..There is a BIG difference. I've danced for almost three years now. Hula is from Hawai'i. hula is more smoother, slower and they play with WAY DIFFERENT instruments. Tahitian is More Fatser and your only suppose to move your hips without moving your upper body. So You, dont try to act like You know everything bc you dont the know the experiences culture. so learn for yourself and see the difference.
I used to take Hula, and some of the differences are that Tahitian dance incorporates more with their hips (which is awesome if you've ever got the chance to watch Tahitian dance). Hula emphasizes the motions of the hands, and more than not is a slower rhythm. =)
I admire those of you that are keeping your culture alive. Granted, that the dances are somewhat different over the years, but then they have always changed throughout history and they will change today. The important think is to keep it beautiful and to tell the story the dance was created for. That tells me that you are surely an artist. Thank you.

as a polynesian myself. If your'e gonna post something be sure to take the comments. It's not a matter of being rude, it's a matter of correcting & making sure it is done right. My ancestors are of Hawn heritage. What do I tell them? They lived & breathed the hula before the haole landed. Just learn your culture before posting.
kaimanakaai 2 years ago 2
& another thing? TAHTIAN IS ANOTHER FCKN POLY DANCE. THERES HULA & THEN THERES TAHITIAN.YA' DIGG? ITS TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!!!!!!!!!
76SOUTHCHSTY 2 years ago 2
i agree, not to be rude or anything but if you dont have more than 3 PLUS years in dancing you have no damn right in teaching hula. YOU NEVER START ON THE LEFT. you people from tha' mainland have no clue. not t be rude or anything.
76SOUTHCHSTY 2 years ago 3
HEY, Not everyone from the mainland doesn't have a clue. i've been dancing hula for 8 years now, & i think i've got a clue on what i'm doing... but seriuosly tho, that girl just needs to stop teaching. wtf, it's not even close to a kaholo! & she says it wrong too, as in koholo. stupid grl.
xjazzyyy 2 years ago
OMG, where did you learn to dance hula. Everyone who dances know that you always start on the right. The hips is NOT an emphasis thing in Hula. Your steps should be closer together. All fingers move together. Perhaps you should watch Merri Monarch Video's. You should teach the foot movements first by counting to the right 1 2 3 together. Place hands on the hips in a kahiko stand. What is that thing on your right leg? Loose it. When teaching hula, it is better to wear a Pa'u skirt. Hawn is Hawn,

This is an embarrassment to the Tahitian and Hawaiian people. KA-HO-LO not KO-HO-LO,
Hula is HAWAIIAN not Tahitian . . . hula dancers ARE NOT this!!!

hate to break it to you but tahitian and hula are two different dance types/styles. there are some similarities but common if you are supposed to be teaching this you should know the difference.

Also when you move your arms, the folded arm is not suppose to go past the center line between your breast.
maddywoo 2 years ago 29
@maddywoo She's Tahitian; I've met her. She may dance hula slightly differently than what you know (which is different from what I know), but don't knock her. They do teach hula slightly differently around the world and other Polynesians (I'm Hawaiian myself, so poly's other than Hawaiian) tend to have their own interpretation of hula. You'll notice some dance with Cook Island hands, which I definitely do not use but I recognize that this exists.
lunefee 6 months ago
If anything, Brie is definitely a Tahitian expert. She'll definitely school anyone in Tahitian, and yes! she does know her hula though different. (I certainly don't bend my arm and wrist as much as she does...I was taught to have my body be geometric with the ground, and that my arms must be parallel to the ground with only a slight bend.)
lunefee 6 months ago
@maddywoo you're right this is ALL wrong. pretty much. for on you're not supposed to bend your wrist like that hula dancers are supposed to be graceful and elegant, she looked really stiff and the Kaholo includes both of your feet moving not just one. She right there is kinda sterotyping to me and thinks shes getting it right. I would know my hula teacher grew up in Hawaii and has been doing hula literally all her life.

The previous comment was deleted because one of my kids posted a less than complimentary response and I sincerely apologize for that.
" 'A'ohe pau ka 'ike i ka halau ho'okahi" is a Hawaiian proverb that proclaims, "All knowledge is not taught in one (hula) school." Hula is a language of the heart so let us not be too critical, but with a loving spirit or in the "spirit of aloha", learn to appreciate the gifts that each dancer of hula possesses.

jista4eva 3 years ago 2
I think this wahine in the video is trying to demonstrate a kaholo "auana" style but the feet and the hands are incorrect (sorry). In auana style- you must be dancing on your toes, and the top part of your body never moves. Don't force your hips to move. It's the steps using the heel toe heel toe effect that is making the hips move. Don't force it.
But I am proud of you for trying.
(end of comment.

kahiauvaitiare 3 years ago 5
The kaholo is a Hawaiian basic hula step- consisting of 3 consecutive steps to the right and left followed by a sway, bringing foot in at fourth count. The hands--> there are 5 placement of angles, and you can kaholo with whatever placement of the hand. It doesn't have to be what is shown on the video which is first position and second position. The hand when it's at first position should be at your boob level. ;o)
Continued..
kahiauvaitiare 3 years ago 2
The second form of hula is simply called "hula" (the public form) and can be danced by both men and women, outside the heiau, and is designed for the maka'ainana or the commoners. This hula is called the public form.
The video, is wrong. Kalamai (I'm sorry) to say, but there is no such thing as a Tahitian hula. Tahitian dances are dances from Tahiti- although there are about 4 types, the bombastic hip movement (ote'a) aparima (kiss of the hands) is soft like the Hawai'ian hula, etc...
Cont..
kahiauvaitiare 3 years ago 2
Second, I do have to let you know the difference- Hula is a dance the island of Hawai'i. There are 2 forms of hula- the ha'a which is also called a Hula Kapu, it's sacred, done only by men, it needed religious significance, danced only by men under a strict direction of a kahuna after a long a rigorous audition- and these dances are designed for the ali'i or of noble blood. This is called the temple form of hula- it's only danced in a heiau (temple).
cont..
kahiauvaitiare 3 years ago 3
First I'd like to praise this lady for at 'least' trying to learn our culture and the dance. It's not all about how good of a dancer you are but really what is in your heart.

cant everyone just say, "well the video was interesting but not the same as the real thing". i mean give her a break because at least shes interesting in learning the dance. maybe she should learn the culture as well. It would be like me telling you that you trying to do a native american dance is wrong because of the color of your skin. I respect your types of dances and would be thrilled if someone wanted to learn one of mine. cant we all just get along? lets not all be racist plz. :)

whats the difference between Tahitian Hula and Hawaiian ula?
gdrozd555 3 years ago 2
Tahitian is the dance of Tahiti...Hula is the dance and story telling of Hawaii. We're not the same people or place.
wessidewahine 3 years ago
"We're not the same people or place"
Wow. Thanks for talking to me like I'm retard.
I'm aware where Tahiti and Hawaii are. Dance looks similar and I wanted to know what the differences are.
gdrozd555 3 years ago
..There is a BIG difference. I've danced for almost three years now. Hula is from Hawai'i. hula is more smoother, slower and they play with WAY DIFFERENT instruments. Tahitian is More Fatser and your only suppose to move your hips without moving your upper body. So You, dont try to act like You know everything bc you dont the know the experiences culture. so learn for yourself and see the difference.
islandbabe94 3 years ago
OMFG
Try reading the original question
It was "whats the difference"
gdrozd555 3 years ago
I didn't mean to make you feel like a retard. Sorry!! But a lot of people when you tell them hula....they think of Tahitian. That's all I meant....
wessidewahine 3 years ago
I used to take Hula, and some of the differences are that Tahitian dance incorporates more with their hips (which is awesome if you've ever got the chance to watch Tahitian dance). Hula emphasizes the motions of the hands, and more than not is a slower rhythm. =)
