I have a small, but huge (in my case), favor to ask for anybody who marched for FAMU and experienced this; it's for a book that I'm writing. I just have two questions. Thanks...
The older daughter looked completely mesmerized. The younger, was probably pouting because earlier, she had been jumping around acting hyper and Michelle gave her "the look", and she immediately stopped. Now, nobody can't say that's not TRUE motherly discipline!! Lol!! #100STRONG
Neither Sahsa nor Malia seems impressed, and rightfully so. This is a big, sloppy mess. Everything about their marching is atrocious, from the horn swing,to the diagonals. They seems disorganized. Drum majors and others are looking around in front of the reviewing stand. I saw FAMU in the '93 and "97 inauguration parades and I was diapoointed. Southern was there, I was far more impressed with them to the point that I followed them on both occasions. FAMU is hype living on past laurels.
@MrOu83 FAMU "Marching 100" is the Best Band in the Land. They are not disorganized or looking around. They are communicating to each other, that's one of the things they show for their Summer Camps and Marching Band. Famu is NOT HYPE from past laurels! Most of you people are just hating. It never fails. For every youtube video displaying african or african american talent, there's a racist white punk's that must spew hatred. Well I guess we have to thank God for the haters as well to make us stronger.
To the person who exclaimed LSU band was the best. Why were they not chosen to represent the country? The proof is withstanding. Give represent when due.
@dreedqueen Because at the time LSU Band was out for the season. Marching Season for LSU happens only during the fall. As for marching in the Inaugual, only a very few bands were chosen. Gramblin' State Marching Band was the band that was chosen to march in the Inaugual for Louisiana.
I can't imagine people talking about MSU in the same breath as FAMU. I went to look at some MSU tape and they are a mediocre marching band. The sound decent, but they march in a sterile military style with fast powerful steps, but not much creativity. When they did the "Thriller" they had to put the instruments down and then do the dance separately. They couldn't play and dance at the same time. The MSU crowd loved it, but they have not seen FAMU or any other Black marching band.
@chessdrummer I'm sorry if this offends you, but here goes:
Black bands have perverted and destroyed marching band, and if I had my way, they'd either perform with some degree of professionalism or just be done altogether.
Marching band has military origins, and demands militaristic precision. Black bands have essentially thrown all of that away, and have reduced marching band to nothing more than clowns with hideous uniforms carrying instruments.
@mashdoctor Doesn't offend me, but it shows that you don't understand HBCU bands. I am more familiar with FAMU, so I will tell you that they are not just carrying instruments... they are incredibly talented musicians. I have heard members of the bands a different non-band events giving solos and playing for visiting groups and most are well-trained in music. You only see the showmanship. You want them to walk in lines and cut corners... well that's not Black marching bands are about.
@mashdoctor dude college marching band was created for entertainment to crowds at football games who knows nothing about music and what a marching band should and sound like. if you were to put a military band in front of a black audience i garuntee you they will not get much respect. people in general like to be entertained. just because its not perfect all the time doesnt mean its not good. you can still dance on the feild and still show musicianship and showmanship. this band has done it.
@mashdoctor Eww you OBVIOUSLY don't know what good quality music is. Core style marching bands are BEYOND boring. HBCU's on the other hand bring a colorful blend of music which to me most people enjoy being that FAMU has one of the most popular bands in the country, and didnt they do a halftime show in the Super Bowl? oh yeah please keep you ridiculous comments/opinions to yourself. You try marching 90 degree angles and pointing your toes.
about the drum major thing...my band director, an alumnus of FAM, told me it was part of "The Rules." For every 40 band members, you need a drum major...idk if he's right but it makes sense. 400+ band members and 10 drum majors...
why they dont have a dance team to go with their band because they sound amazing and i wanna go their but i wanna dance cause im a dance girl for williamson high school
If you're interested in playing "Celebration" loud enough for people within a 3-mile radius can hear you, go brass.
If you are interested in playing 16th notes at 160 bpm, go woodwinds, they won't sound as dirty.
That being said, most marching bands are more interested in being loud and dark than technical and reedy, so generally brass is more important than woodwinds.
LMAO man wait one min let me get back in my chair. The fact that The Marching 100 has probably been more places and done more then MSU alone speak Volumes. Some say it's for the presidents, but for years they only had 8 and on rare occasion 9....but in all reality, the band is just that big, you need alot of manpower to help coordinate 400+ people.
@Melvin430 It is for the # of presidents, hence the presidential X(10) the 9th president of the university was short lived then they got a tenth a few years later but they were also(and most famously) known as the Eight Wonders of The World, Magnificent Seven, etc, etc
Oh yes I've seen High Schools with better sound than "Spartans" &nd Famu has sound that is clean and sharp! Unlike those "Spartans" and uniforms are one thinq.Since you're not even in a band you need to keep your comments to yourself because obviously you don't know what the heck you're talking about. I'm sorry but I've never even heard of that school til you mention it and I had to watch videos of them...Also you can't even hear your woodwinds! But thats just my opinion so whatever
Well good for you that's your opinion, but not only can we play we will out perform them any day of the week. They will look like complete idiots attempting to match the Rattlers. Please believe.
Um, have you even seen the Spartan Marching Band? As great as you guys sound, the Spartan Marching Band sounds equally as good, if not more, AND they actually look professional. Whereas this band, and this is just one thing, straight lines seem to elude them.
Not really we played for President Clinton as well we are legendary...I'm a FAMU 1993 Rattler we will always be the band all others are measured by. Learn it!

imma be real with ya...some people dont need to ALWAYS act like they are so superior. I know GENERALLY SPEAKING ...FAMU has a great band and history.
but on the real.....some years ago I went to a battle of the bands here in Macon, GA where a small high school "Peach County GA"....they showed out on FAMU...Ft. Valley State University...and several other more popular high schools in attendance from Atlanta, Macon and Augusta. They out performed them all on that particular night, real shit.
I give it up to FAMU, they represented for all HBCU's during the inauguration! Those white folks out there were lovin' FAMU out there in the bitter cold. You see how in awe the President and his family were at their performance? Priceless!!!!
Man shut your ass up. What makes you think that FAMU rep'ed for all HBCUs? They had on FAMU colors, marched FAMUs style, and had FAMUs repetoire. I guarantee you if they got paid, they wouldn't have split the money with all the other HBCUs. Dummy.
@topdogg757 Man, first of all, you're a year late. . . .second, FAMU didn't "rep" for ALL HBCUs. UAPB was there, Howard was there, Hampton. . .just to name a few. So how can FAMU represent all HBCU bands if they weren't the only ones there?
they were obviously in a secluded area where the sound is going to bounce off the buildings. I'm sure the tubas did not mean to sound that loud. Its not there fault they are the biggest tuba section in the world :)
Not true, they were balanced however the closer they got to the mics the more you heard them. Notice around the time your heard them most is the same time you heard the wood winds.
they sounded good dont get me wrong. i love to hear tubas playin' out like that. its just that at a few times a few of them got out of time. even the drum majors noticed it in the beginning.
We Represented as Usual!! BUT it was so COLD..and A lot of members were sick..then off to ATL...where we put our best foot forward dispite our circumstances!! I'm proud to be a Rattler!!
Its obvious that you are just talking to get attention.Pres.Obama doesnt pick and chose who attends at the parade. You have to apply like everyone else.If you dont like it why dont you become President and see how many ppl you piss off for something so small.
I'm a freshman on band and by the screen name i guess u can tell i play sax. FAMU has always been like my dream college. Does anyone know like how I can join their band?
How is everyone on the planet supposed to know their history? Obama can't have EVERYONE. There were more hbcu's and h.s at this parade than any other in history. WTF were you watching? Nothing makes one black school historic over the other but you own mouth
No dissrespect but I feel that Obama should have had more historic black bands in his parade like FAMU, BCU Jones High School, Grambling, Booker T Washington High School, Tuskegee, Miami Carole, I'm just saying this is a big step in black history. Those schools I named went through hell in history and look at them now but no body really knows it. But anyways FAM good job you represented FL well.
I'm not saying everyone, I'm saying the most historic, Jones is probably the most historic black school in Florida aside from Cookman, but then again Cookman only started out so historic because a female founded it and it was an all female college. Think about it how the fuck you gonna go to these black schools and get there votes and not allow them to celebrate with you? Thats a slap in the face.
My school is nowhere near FAMU, not even an HBCU, but I'm still a huge fan of the 100. I'm so happy for this band because y'all got a huge opportunity and killed it, as usual!
We need 2 stadiums for da Rattlers. FAMU yall were great, everything was together, no section was louder than the other and the the tone was just right but keep poppin them 90's see yall at Battle of the Bands in '09
That is what i'm talking about 2:05 sax section picking them up. It is something about hearing a HBCU band make a person that can not dance like myself feel as if they can. lololol
I'm so proud of them for bringing it despite being in that cold for all those hours. I was there and almost missed them. It was truly a great day for everyone.
Look @ PODUS bopping his head to FAMU..... Good job 100 !!!!!!

they sounded good dont get me wrong. i love to hear tubas playin' out like that. its just that at a few times a few of them got out of time. even the drum majors noticed it in the beginning.

I forgot why we couldnt stop, I think its b/c of the illness of Kennedy
lilmofamu 2 years ago 2
Cuz sumbody had a heart attack or a seizure that's why it was delayed and all that time wasted made them cut that part out of the parade.

Im mad that they didnt get funky and break it down for Obama eventhough they did it for Clinton.

Its obvious that you are just talking to get attention.Pres.Obama doesnt pick and chose who attends at the parade. You have to apply like everyone else.If you dont like it why dont you become President and see how many ppl you piss off for something so small.

How is everyone on the planet supposed to know their history? Obama can't have EVERYONE. There were more hbcu's and h.s at this parade than any other in history. WTF were you watching? Nothing makes one black school historic over the other but you own mouth
TheMakingsofMyself 2 years ago
No dissrespect but I feel that Obama should have had more historic black bands in his parade like FAMU, BCU Jones High School, Grambling, Booker T Washington High School, Tuskegee, Miami Carole, I'm just saying this is a big step in black history. Those schools I named went through hell in history and look at them now but no body really knows it. But anyways FAM good job you represented FL well.
jhstiger 2 years ago
did u even watch the parade? there were a LOT of hbcu bands and h.s there. and everything else in between from his home of hawaii
TheMakingsofMyself 2 years ago 2
and everyone can't be included in everything
TheMakingsofMyself 2 years ago
I'm not saying everyone, I'm saying the most historic, Jones is probably the most historic black school in Florida aside from Cookman, but then again Cookman only started out so historic because a female founded it and it was an all female college. Think about it how the fuck you gonna go to these black schools and get there votes and not allow them to celebrate with you? Thats a slap in the face.
jhstiger 2 years ago
the first step in going is to apply. Cookman didnt apply.
hhorns2002 2 years ago 2
Oh ok I didn't know that.

My school is nowhere near FAMU, not even an HBCU, but I'm still a huge fan of the 100. I'm so happy for this band because y'all got a huge opportunity and killed it, as usual!
tp2005 3 years ago 2
We need 2 stadiums for da Rattlers. FAMU yall were great, everything was together, no section was louder than the other and the the tone was just right but keep poppin them 90's see yall at Battle of the Bands in '09
alphaphi2006 3 years ago 2
That is what i'm talking about 2:05 sax section picking them up. It is something about hearing a HBCU band make a person that can not dance like myself feel as if they can. lololol
slvance2nd 3 years ago 2
FAMU and UAPB both HBCU's again prove where the best bands are. Great job bands. Together they got more play time than any other bands, put together.

Kedarispimp 3 years ago
How do you guys keep the tempo? It seems like you're large enough that there'd be a delay in the sound from one end to the other.
HuggumsMcgehee 3 years ago
Thats in large why the Percussion section is in the middle. you cna hear the pulse of the beat in the front section and the back section
TheMakingsofMyself 3 years ago
Yeah I know. But I play with Tuskegee (much smaller) and I just wondered if the delay was too long or something.
HuggumsMcgehee 3 years ago
