Black Bears are more shy than Grizzly Bears and will mostly be more scared of you than you are of it, but keep your distance.... All bears eat meat... End of story....

@csbob2010 i think you have that backwards. black bears will bolt 95 percent of the time, and if they do charge you have a good chance surviving by fighting back. if a grizzlly charges it likely won't be a bluff, will maul than kill you, and then consume you. brown bears are far more aggressive and lethal than black, both in alaska and in alberta
@wrldeye12 Your probably right but I remember reading somewhere that when a black bear actually does attack a human it will most likely result in death. However, in many grizzly attacks the person isn't killed but rather mauled and left once the grizzly realizes you aren't a threat. Of course I have no real experience to speak from...so you probably know.

I'd say you were DAMN lucky. Bears can run amazingly fast! I've spooked a few out of the brush on hunting trips with my dad - and they can pick 'em up and put 'em down. I'd have stayed in the car - that's what zoom lenses are for.
