When I look at her videos, I can't help but smile, because it's so evident that she really loves to sing. Maybe that's why she touched so many people.
I was actually sick and tired of hearing this song from the 1970's in radio in Kenya from the time I could remember. This was the time when ABBA, Boney m, Osibisa, Bee Gees etc were in their heyday. I remember like it was yesterday. But its nice to hear it again, this time from the golden voice of the late Miriam Makeba. I have done a rough translation with my rusty swahili, anyone is welcome to improve the translation. Its been decades since I was in Kenya.
Simple translation from (my rusty)swahili to english(she repeats this theme a few times). I grew up in Kenya, where Swahili-this language she is singing in is the national language. She herself was South African , so I doubt whether she understood swahili-this actually is not her own song, its a Kenyan singer who composed it.
(1) Angel I love/like you( no distinction between love and like in swahili)
(2) I could have married you
(3)But I couldn't come up with the bride price(dowry)
simply beautiful !! I have been an ardent fan of hers since she first set foot on American soil. I am a 77 yr old black women who had the pleasure of seeing her in person at Mr kellys in Chicago, it was quite an experience and I would say that, if you have not been able to see her perform in person you have missed an outstanding entertainer. I have followed her career since the beginning and probably have most of her albums and recently purchased her recent CD's May she rest peacefully.
Merci.
Malaika, nakupenda Malaika (2X),Ningekuoa mali we,Ningekuoa dada...Nashindwa na mali sina we Ningekuoa Malaika (2X)... Pesa zasumbua roho yangu(2X).Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio...Nashindwa na mali sina we,Ningekuoa Malaika(2X)...Kidege, hukuwaza kidege(2X)...Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio...Nashindwa na mali sina we,Ningekuoa Malaika(2X) Malaika...(Rpt 1st.)!!! (By Fadhili williams from Kenya or Adam Salim from Tanzania...!) Who knows? ;-)
I grew up in Malindi, near Mombasa, i believe this was actually written by Fadhili Williams and performed by the Jambo Boys in Kenya around 1960. Miriam may well have heard this song in Tanzania but it's origins lie in Kenya.
But she heard first in Tanzania and she always said here is a love song from Tanzania, up to this day there is no proof this song was written by Fadhili Williams as we all know African songs are not "at those days written by one person
