  • That sucks. I just blew my engine in my vf52 swap 2008 wrx. I dont get warrenty...so i guess life is over now unless i hit the lottery.lol

  • To all people who hate on Subaru:

Everyone has problems. To be fair though, EJ25s have ALWAYS had some kind of issue. Subaru's greatest mistake was phasing out the 205, 22E, & 22T for the American market. It's latest EJ25 is horrid & goes against the reliability reputation Subaru has built for itself.

I've owned 2 Subarus. They were both awesome cars. No major failures at all. Just the occasional burnt light bulb or popped fuse. Both were late 90's models.

  • I had the same problem. Same car. And they replaced the engine at 42,000km. Exact same sound. When the car was new the PVC valve froze and started blowing white smoke checked the oil and the stick was dry. Maybe this was the cause of my problem.

  • Man, subarus have ALWAYS sucks. I owned 2 subarus (years apart) that had nothing but problems. And I always hear the same lies (being perpetuated by Subaru); that the problems are somehow related to "older models" and "they have been fixed now"....but every few years its a new recall or a new rash or problems with the cars they said were "fixed".....the cars have always sucked. From my first 2001 Outback to this 2009 WRX. I guess you have to own one to KNOW the misery that is Subaru ownership.

  • that is some nasty ass rod knock

  • How did you blow your engine?

  • Shoulda bought a American car!!!

  • @m69ortiz subarus practically are now american douche, and thats why they are starting to suck now

  • POS Subaru engines.

  • you got knockin bro lmao

  • subaru diesel!

  • @GGGRRiny Haha hell yea!

  • never get A subaru fastest strongest wreckless, alway hand yr pocket with subaru, that sound right there is through rod pistons...

  • Only the first 2 months of production had this issue, its kinda cool though because its nice being one of the few people with such a nice car. Those who know nothing about manufacturing flaws, or well cars in general, were scared away. EVERY car company has the same issues, German cars included. Check out 3gwrxdotcom, these things are sweet!

  • this vid was posted about a year ago. Is this problem fixed? i wanted to buy one =(

  • My friends Wrx started doing the exact same thing, Subaru replaced the engine free of charge , which saved him $16000 Australian. Ive read there was either a manufacturing flaw in the conrod bearings, which were changed to silver from lead and incorectly machined and theres also a problem with the engine running lean when not on boost, which was done for low emissions, but subsequently caused pistons to burn through. Make sure the cars fairly stock or the dealers might try to get out of it

  • Has nothing to do with breakin/ his driving, engines in the '09 model are known to throw rod bearings like crazy, manufacturer defect. They just wont come out and say that because then they'd have to issue a recall and replace 1000's of engines

  • why the hell would you keep driving that? sounds like a cracked block or a bad piston. you don't deserve that car if you broke it, Subaru's can last years and years before breaking. -1 for being an idiot.

  • to tell you the truth... my dads does that same thing... do your reaseach and you will learn that 2002-present engines have been recalled for spun bearings... and my dad changes oil every 2000 miles too! it was a manufacturing defect that made the bearings like an oval shape...

  • lol i prefer to drive "that" to my house or delaer, instead of having to pay a tow truck(wasting money) when i know that the car is actually gonna get me there and as for you calling him an idiot lol the only idiot here is you, that's actually a known manufacturer defect, you would know that if you actually got your head out your ass and did just a tit of research on the matter. Subaru just won't come out and say it cuz then the'll have to do a recall and replace 1000's of engines.

  • I have a 1997 bmw e39 and the engine purrs as smooth as can be. Once again! Buy german!!

  • none of you have a clue whats going on. ya his engine is shot. Seems like alot WRXs with 08/08 build dates had this happen. seems like some one screwed something up on the line.

  • yea. i've noticed the same thing.

  • OMG dude stop filming n shut it off lol

  • That's what warranty is for. If its totally stock you have nothing to worry about, they'll take care of it.

  • even though you're gettin thumbs down, its true. this has got to be the number 1 blown engine in a new car on youtube. idk, they're fast but don't seem to last long under abuse or slight modification. best to be easy and leave it stock i guess.

  • well the crappy shifter on the test drive kept me from buying one. just as well..

  • It's got a subaru boxer engine....... love, what makes a subaru a subaru LOL. I've heard of way to many of these engines blowing up or failing otherwise.... i'd be pissed

  • this has to be an oil delivery/circulation problem. not enough oil to the bearing causing it to lose its thin metal to oil cushioning barrier.thus causing a "spun bearing"....

  • The new bearing is made of silver and it breaks easily. This is a manufacturer defect and has nothing to do with oil delivery.

  • Here it is. The only thing that is broken in on new engines are. 1 flat tapit cams(mostly old engines)Maybe on subaru if it shim on bucket or under bucket. 2 piston rings to cylinders. I think new technology fixed piston rings breaking in. Rod bearings going that early is most likely a flaw in the design of the rod or oiling system. Rod bearings never touch the rod they folat on a film of oil. Also could be from detonation but I would guess one of the other two first.

  • could not possibly be detonating considering its stock and detontion doesnt sound like that. You spun the bearing in your turbo for sure

  • turbo?

  • To sforzley and those who thinks he is a bad driver he is not. I also encountered this problem. 09wrx 265 broke in the engine very nicly for 2000km and didn't push the car very hard to have blown a rob bearing. The service department at subaru ensured me this was only a problem and that they are replacing the intire engine so i have no future problems. no questions point of failure was about 2500km i was in fith gear 5000rpm 200kph and it failed. redline is 6500/8000. i was bummed happend today

  • 9/08 builds did not have the problems like the 7/08 and 8/08. Mine is 10/08 and is running strong. I am a victim of one with the 2200 rpm hang at slow parking lot speeds but this will be handled soon hopefully with a new map from subaru soon like they did with the 08 2.5i

  • Nice car bro. But never buy a car when it first comes out. Wait until they fix things on the 1st versions.

  • My 09 has about 1300k miles already and I have raced it a couple times and no problem, it runs hard. You probably just got bad luck or did something to the car that you shouldnt have like redline before the 1k miles or mod before 1k miles idk good luck with that hope your warranty covers the damage.

  • 2.2l was sold for 12 or 13 years, or for about as long as 2.5l has been selling for ; I wouldn't call it short. If Subaru built lighter vehicles, there would be no need for 170hp 4 cylinder engine. I can't wait for diesel to come in.

  • Okay, the EJ22t was a very good engine. It was closed deck and many people use it as a cheap race engine. HOWEVER, this is a problem isolated for the 09 WRX built during a certain time period. The other 2.5 liter engines made by Subaru have been consistently reliable. The EJ257 motor can handle very high horsepower on stock internals safely which I credit Subaru for.

  • My engine did the same shit. Yours sounded louder.

  • Sorry to hear, you are gonna get a new one from Subaru, looks like one more victim, good luck

  • @sforzley

I realize this over since this over a year ago, its odd to comment, but did your new engine have the same problem?

  • Thanks to all those who viewed and commented. Some of you of course not too impressed with my driving.

In anycase, I am not a special case, there are about 20 of us that i know off, with the same problem, too many for a brand new car.

Subaru seems to have at least commented at least verbaly that this is a known problem now related to the machining and deburring process.

In anycase, break in your engine, but if you car is one of the ones impacted by this, breaking it in may not matter

  • naw man, that's not the cat back, it's the new quad ejaculator valves that the car comes with. You get the extra performance when the valve kicks in after you drive the car to hard and don't know how to drive a new car easy.

I'm being sarcastic by the way too...

learn how to drive, don't take your brand new baby to redline at every stop light, and I know that is hard to do with a subaru.

  • that sucks man. I have an 09 with 1600 on it and i really hope this dont happen

  • Break in first(Your sales person must not know his vehicles?); I have 2 Subarus. They'll replace it just follow through and research further. There are also forums that will help tremendously.

  • A friend of mine has an '09 Forester Turbo, and the engine blew with only 3500km's on it. He was babying it too. I feel bad because I recommended a Subaru. Then the transmission went in my '03 WRX with only 130,000kms on it! Really making me rethink my loyalty to Subaru. Still tempted by the WRX 265 though. Other than the EVO, there aren't any other turbo, AWD cars out there.

  • what are the last 6 digits of your cars VIN? If people will post up info like this it could be used to show a pattern of defective engines.

  • This video makes me nervous as hell. I just bought a 09 wrx 5 door and decided to run it hard for break-in based on the research (And talking to race mechanics). I've only got 250 miles on it, and I'm going to go easy on it from here on in until 1000-1500. Getting the oil changed this weekend...hope I didn't screw it up. Argh.

  • If the car is not making any odd noises or you don't see stuff burning. You should be ok.

  • Yeah I have heard lots of stuff and I work on subarus ALOT including my own and I would ALWAYS take it easy on a car for the first 1,000 miles. But as long as nothing is burnin up on you or making funny noises or leaking anything then you are alright. You are not the first person to do that.

  • it doesn't really matter if you broke it in or not, I beat the crap outta my sti when i first got it and there's not much difference in the two motors. subaru just went cheap that's all, I mean come on plastic intake manifold?

  • I did not know about the plastic manifold, hmmm

  • No worries... :)

I was saying the the plastic manifold is suppose to be more efficient than the metal/aluminum intake manifold that the older/other models have. It's made of ABS plastic which is good for weight reduction and lowering intake temperature. And yes, it's also Subaru's way of cutting manufacturing costs. One true downfall of the plastic intake is boosting past 17psi. The whole thing will fall apart due to the intake not being able to withstand the pressure. Sad but true.

  • dont worry the stang gt has one too

  • @porkhang yeah that and america practically runs em now :( thats probly why they look like kia's now too (after 07)

  • Welcome to the club... There's about 20+ more people out there with your same rod bearing failure. You will get a complete complete engine w/ retal car.

  • hah my guess to everybody that bought a NEW '09 wrx and have engine problems, you drove it hard from the start, not letting the engine break in properly and thus resulting in engine problems. It is a new car so you have to give it time before you push it, and don't come at me with bull shit that you didn't

  • Maybe we drove it hard, point is, if it needed break it, some one should tell you that no? If its so important then it should be well mentioned

  • well yea but everybody should already know a new car needs to be broken in and I don't have this car but I'm guessing it's in the manual? maybe? I'm not a mechanic so I don't know if that's the reason your engine has problems or not but it certainly makes sense

  • I dont dispute what you are saying

Yes, its in the manual, in the TIPS section, on page 180, Chapter 8. Chapter 8 is about useful tips for your car. Now lets be honest, who reads any manual, let alone a car manual, let alone all the way to page 180 of a boring car manual.

If its important they should say it first thing, in the warning section. They should tell you before they hand off the keys.

Do cars need to be broken in still, that ended in the 70's no? Proche you dont break in, u just go

  • every new car needs to be driven easily for at least the first 1000 miles.

  • i wud of said the first 500 miles not 1000 but yeah new cars still need to be ran in.

  • well my friend this is a subaru not a porsche. just cuz everyone doesn't read manuals is no reason to throw blame...everyone knows that when its new...u need a to keep it below 4k rpms for the first 400 miles...and after that dont get into it for the first 1k miles just to make sure everything is running correctly and lubed up. u dont just ram ur dick into a woman right?? theres gotta be sum sort of wetness lol but to be honest all engines are run in the factory for a while...kids r destructable

  • Hahaha classic, the woman ramming got me.

  • lol yea well i mean its true. people all have different theories on how to train an engine, when really its just like sex. start of slow then turn up the speed

  • are you saying these kids did not break them in.. if so i could imagine that

  • most kids ages 16-20 get a car and then just keep the pedal down around every turn until they hit something of the car breaks.

  • Sorry to hear that..

  • 5 bucks says its a spun bearing. They will pull the pan, and the bearing will pretty much be exploded inside the motor. How do I know? It happened to me with 964 miles on my 09 wrx. They replaced the motor and refunded my extended warranty. Just gotta jump through the hoops.

  • subaru change my engine after 2400 km. same noise

  • wht's wrong with the engine???

  • not exactly sure yet, waiting for the dealer to do the analysis, so far everyone is saying it needs a new engine

  • hmmm i's a brand new car, why don't u take it and get another one, cuz it's not ur fault that the car has defects !

  • Well that is what i expect will happen, so far i hear from a few owners who had this problem that this is what happened. I guess they just have to go through the process with Subaru.

  • i test drove the new wrx a month ago, and i guess it was alright !! but yeah some people have engine problems !!

  • made me cry

  • thanks DaddyTyce, do you own a wrx

  • am about to, and you have the model i want... 09 WRX Sedan
