I appreciate that many Japanese people here are offended by the Australians and American protesters, but seriously: stop the generalizations and calling all Australians racists. NONE of the Australian protesters, or even the reporter claim that ALL Japanese people eat/kill dolphins. They do not say ANYTHING about being Japanese, they are protesting against the PRACTICE. Countries that abuse their hunting rules however, need to get the beating. There are no rules regarding dolphin hunting in the Solomon Islands, the Faroe Islands, and other islands in the Pacific region. And if there are any, they are not implemented at all.
Japan may be killing dolphins (it's part of their culture), but they actually manage to regulate the hunts. Fishermen just don't go out there and kill the first thing they see-- they actually follow certain hunting rules so they do not endanger the collective dolphin population that are known to swim to Japan every season.

As far as I understand, Japanese fishers kill dolphins to survive. Too many dolphins follow the fishing boats and eat fish before fishers can catch the fish. Therefore, the government permits the fishers to kill a minimum number of the dolphines to protect the fishers. I believe that killing dolphins is a hard task for the fishers. They do not enjoy it. It is cruel to push those fishers to give up their jobs.

But Why the anti whaling and anti dolphin catching campaign protest to only Japan? Denmark, Norway, Alaska government are white european countries. Japanese are aian, and also Japanese fishermen are gentle, not violent to protect. While european fishermen are violent against Seashepherd. Sea Shepherd denies to go to the european cove, this reason means coward as well as racism.

@baron706 People focus on Japan because 23,000 of the 30,000 dolphins killed each year are killed in Japan. The Japanese fishermen kill much more dolphins than the other countries combined. Even if the Japanese fishermen are gentle, they sure don't act gentle to the dolphins. Besides, there are campaigns against the pilot whale slaughter in the Faroe Islands. You have to realize Sea Shepherd isn't the only organization out there.

@baron706 your right the Tasmanian tiger (which is the sack wolf..) was run into exctinction, however it was exctinct on the mainland of australia many years before the english colonised australia, as it's pray was hunted out and it was hunted itself by the aboriginal people, hundreds of years ago, it existed in small numbers in tasmania up until the 1920's (almost 100 years ago), almost no one alive today could have even seen a T tiger let alone be responsible for there death.

Less than 1% of the population have ever consumed Dolphins.
Most Japanese had no clue that this was happening in Japan.
Only the people in and around Taiji knew of these horrors.
After the movie Cove was released, many Japanese were shocked, this is NOT JAPAN this is Taiji, many Japanese are against Taijis despicable acts, but Japan still has a lot to learn about animal protection.

And honestly I do not like Paul Watson either- I believe he has lied to the media and his own crew many times. And i think the grind in the Faroe islands is MORE brutal and unnecesary than those in Taiji. But that dosn't make the killings of Taiji "better"

@baron706 Yes, I'm not disagreeing with you necessarily. But there are a few problems with that. 1 is the way the animals are killed. They endure long, painful deaths, and are forced to watch their pod die. this is unnecesary. Dolphin meat contains high amounts of mercury which can acctualy give those who eat it mental handicaps. So why is it served in schools? & many particular whale and dolphin populations have showed a steady decrease due to hunting. a few species killed even are endangered

@baron706 Barbaric slaughter is not "culture" its murder. And though its true few Japanese acctualy eat dolphin meat, many dolphin meats are acctualy labeled as whale meat. Also, some dolphins in these pods are not killed, there sold for insain amounts of money to marine parks, particularly "Dolphin Base" which keeps the dolphins in small, filthy, inhumane tanks, where most go into depressing, become ill, and/or live very short lives. That's culture? No. Thats abuse

As far as I understand, Japanese fishers kill dolphins to survive. Too many dolphins follow the fishing boats and eat fish before fishers can catch the fish. Therefore, the government permits the fishers to kill a minimum number of the dolphines to protect the fishers. I believe that killing dolphins is a hard task for the fishers. They do not enjoy it. It is cruel to push those fishers to give up their jobs.

the question of white men kill cows but Japanese kill dolphins and whales, what is the problem here? Well, dolphins are HIGHLY intelligent creatures, so much so that we could learn a lot from them. Finding an effective method of communicating with dolphins could reveal a lot of the oceans mysteries. Also the whole world eat cows , why are the Japanese so adamant it is their 'tradition,' I think it seems more like the Japanese trying to oppose the western world than maintain tradition.
