O.k. I've said this before, I will say it for the last time. Its all about what you like. I'm and r and b, jazz, and funk person, so to me Jimi is about as good as it gets. Now, as for the people who say his style is outdated. Are you kidding me. Everyt guitarist alive today has some element of his playing in them.. But its all subjective. It depends on what the music does for you. He didn't neck tap, sweep arpeggio etc. But his music still holds up today, because it came from within IMO.
i don't think there's any such thing as "the best", but he was pretty damn good at what he did. i think that's the main point...the ones that people remember or regard as the best, do their own thing & do it well. personally, i'd rather listen to some others play, but yeah, he was good, no doubt.
i prefer Tuck Andress, Lenny Breau and Pat Metheny... Like those guitarists and their skills make Hendrix's skills look so inferior x) Though without Hendrix, guitar evolution wouldn't have evolved into what it is. xP
Jimi hendrix is DEFINITELY not the best guitarist of all time—perhaps, he WAS at his time. His skill is way to outdated now. He didn't know sweep arpeggios, legato, and i don't think he was capable of pulling off fast alternative picking, there is no song that has any of those elements. People say slash is, I don't think he is either. To be honest I don't think anyone is good enough for best guitarist of all time. Every guitarist has strengths and weaknesses. That's just my view.

Jimmy was one of a kind. A pioneer. He led the way and there will never be another like him. Having said that, he is far from "the best". All things improve. It's the nature of things. There are any number of basement guitarists on you tube that can play circles around Jimmy.

Actually any good guitarist can make himself to appear to be playing the guitar with his teeth but in reality he's just hammering the notes with his fingers. With the gain turned up real high on his guitar amp it's easy to hammer the strings with the fingers and make the strings sing, Jimi was a master at this technique.
Jimi Hendrix is not the best guitarist ever...he wasn't even the best of his time. He even stated Terry Kath was a better guitarist then him. Also, Santana was out as was Al Di Meola. How can you even compare Hendrix to them, or Shawn Lane, Pertucci, Paco De Lucci, Satriani? Hendrix didnt even know a basic blues scale... :(
Hendrix is my fav guitarist because i have never seen anyone else in modern music just connect to the instrument as well as him, miles davis described hendrix as the coltrane of guitar playing & i think that is a very apt observation. I'm sure had jimi lived he would have satisfied the metal shredders with more technical solo's as he was more than capable but to my ears man something like machine gun is just unsurpassed to this day.

Hendrix was original and Revolutionary to music, but I have never seen anything amazing about his solos. There good, but why do people consider him the best? I know people are gonna bash me on this comment so I won't even read the replies on this comment, just delete them. I think he was a great influence to most of the best guitarists that are around now, but he isn't great and to tell you the truth he is more of just a Vegas act with the playing with his teeth and burning his guitar.

jimi was great but people need to move on, for one there is no best guitarist because there is so many guitar styles. You could Hendrix was the best for his time but today there are more advanced guitarists. Steve vai, Satch, and paul gilbert are technically better but I would much rather listen to Jimi. Not saying that Hendrix wasnt good because he is a god, but im just saying that in todays world we are more advanced musically then jimi's era.
i agree that there really is no BEST guitarist but Jimi had skills that people today cant even do and he's an influence to all those people you listed plus MORE. jimi will always go down in history as one of the most influencial guitarists of all time..

It all depends on what you define as great. If you define great as being based solely on technical profiency on the instrument, Hendrix is not the greatest. If you define it as innovating an approach to the instrument which is imitated for decades to come, then Hendrix is unquestionably the greatest. He redefined not only guitar playing, but musical expression as a whole. Those who say that Slash is better are missing the bigger picture.
ok my point is that playing flamenco requires more dexterity as a guitar player than playing rock/blues using electric guitar with a pick. It doesn't mean that anyone can be a good rock/blues player, but I would say that between a rock superstart and a flamenco superstart, as a guitarist, I would give more credit to the flamenco one. In other words, Paco OWNS Hendrix! Of course, in the POP world the rock start will do better, same way that Britney Spear has more followers than Beethoven.
Do you think a high-school kid in the middle of Chicago, in a garage band, is gonna say "I want to be like Paco de Lucia!" no way man, there's the dilema of the distortion, and the pick, picking picking and picking. Then there's also the sustains by tapping, o yeahhh!!! you cannot do that in the acoustic guitar, you must do plain finger finger, much finger!!
When I take an electric guitar, I want to be like Jimi Hendrix or the Red Hot Chili Peppers and create Rock & Roll, Funk. I do weird things with the whammy bar and I want to rock it out and create great solos like Jimi Hendrix. I usually have a high distorsion or fuzz.

They have an electric-guitar view of the world, they think, eat, urinate and defecate electric guitars, and distortion pedals, and don't want to hear clear beautiful armonic sounds from an acoustic guitar.
Metal is the best way to show the abilities in music, the speed is part of difficulty, that's why now are metal/symphonic/melodic bands. acoustic guitar show another type of sound, not better.
When I take the acustic guitar, I think just in opposite things: create great melodies from chords, playing around them, playing fast notes between the chords, like Hey Joe. I create the most beautifull songs.

Hendrix was original and Revolutionary to music, but I have never seen anything amazing about his solos. There good, but why do people consider him the best? I know people are gonna bash me on this comment so I won't even read the replies on this comment, just delete them. I think he was a great influence to most of the best guitarists that are around now, but he isn't great and to tell you the truth he is more of just a Vegas act with the playing with his teeth and burning his guitar.

jimi was great but people need to move on, for one there is no best guitarist because there is so many guitar styles. You could Hendrix was the best for his time but today there are more advanced guitarists. Steve vai, Satch, and paul gilbert are technically better but I would much rather listen to Jimi. Not saying that Hendrix wasnt good because he is a god, but im just saying that in todays world we are more advanced musically then jimi's era.

i agree that there really is no BEST guitarist but Jimi had skills that people today cant even do and he's an influence to all those people you listed plus MORE. jimi will always go down in history as one of the most influencial guitarists of all time..

The reason I said this video doesn't do Jimi justice AT ALL is because all it shows is him playing a mediocre solo with his teeth, and then smashing his guitar. Your completely right when you say its about writing music, and thats why i think Jimi the best, and if everyone who is saying he sucks actually listened to enough of his good stuff (not this stupid video) i think they would change their minds...

@gillyguy Jimi Hendrix was nowhere near the best guitarist,he even said Chicago's guitarist was better and also Phil Keaggy.Jimi mainly played the pentatonic scale and thats about it with the blue note.He stole most all his tricks from the early blues players that did the behind the back and playing with their teeth before he was even born.To say he was the best shows ur complete ignorance about music.

I'm not saying he IS the best guitarist of all time, even though he is to me, obviously everyone has their own tastes. What im saying is that in order to be considered by the majority of music critics and musicians to be the best guitarist of all time, you have to be more than "ok."

It all depends on what you define as great. If you define great as being based solely on technical profiency on the instrument, Hendrix is not the greatest. If you define it as innovating an approach to the instrument which is imitated for decades to come, then Hendrix is unquestionably the greatest. He redefined not only guitar playing, but musical expression as a whole. Those who say that Slash is better are missing the bigger picture.

ok my point is that playing flamenco requires more dexterity as a guitar player than playing rock/blues using electric guitar with a pick. It doesn't mean that anyone can be a good rock/blues player, but I would say that between a rock superstart and a flamenco superstart, as a guitarist, I would give more credit to the flamenco one. In other words, Paco OWNS Hendrix! Of course, in the POP world the rock start will do better, same way that Britney Spear has more followers than Beethoven.

Do you think a high-school kid in the middle of Chicago, in a garage band, is gonna say "I want to be like Paco de Lucia!" no way man, there's the dilema of the distortion, and the pick, picking picking and picking. Then there's also the sustains by tapping, o yeahhh!!! you cannot do that in the acoustic guitar, you must do plain finger finger, much finger!!

When I take an electric guitar, I want to be like Jimi Hendrix or the Red Hot Chili Peppers and create Rock & Roll, Funk. I do weird things with the whammy bar and I want to rock it out and create great solos like Jimi Hendrix. I usually have a high distorsion or fuzz.

Young people appeal more to electric guitar for a problem of culture, like high-school kids look up to rock stars as models to follow, and are so heavily influenced by that music, that some of them don't even know what an acoustic guitar is. They have an electric-guitar view of the world, they think, eat, urinate and defecate electric guitars, and distortion pedals, and don't want to hear clear beautiful armonic sounds from an acoustic guitar.

When I take the acustic guitar, I think just in opposite things: create great melodies from chords, playing around them, playing fast notes between the chords, like Hey Joe. I create the most beautifull songs.

this is a fucking myth!!! of course, he was good, an american guitarist... but you cannot claim "best guitarist of all time" did you ever see Jimmy Hendrix playing Flamenco music? Do you think he would keep up with Paco de Lucia? Now, if you don't like Flamenco that's a different history, but playing like Paco de Lucia, ACOUSTIC guitar, plain FINGERs, requires LOTS more skill than this electric guitar business... listen to "Entre dos Aguas", "Impetu & Panaderos" and you'll see what I mean...
